So here's the last game with digitised graphics I have to cover (not the last pre-rendered game though), and it's a bit of an odd one indeed.
The Kung Fu Master Jackie Chan stars (who else) Jackie Chan, as the main opponent of a fighting game. He takes three forms in this game, which are derived from a number of his film appearances.
This version of Jackie is wearing his ceremonial outfit from the film Project A, hence why he's known as Project A Jackie Chan to most.
Jackie Chan is of course the beloved Hong Konger martial arts master/movie star, who has been acting since the 1961 (previously lost) film Big and Little Wong Tin Bar. He's generally underrepresented in fighting games (most fighting game characters are based on martial artists), with the exception of the character Lei Wulong in the Tekken series. In terms of popularity he's always been a bit overshadowed by the other legendary Hong Konger martial arts movie star Bruce Lee. Jackie, despite his incredibly martial arts prowess, is known for being a very comedic and upbeat individual in contrast to the general seriousness of Bruce Lee, with many of his films being comedic in tone, and this makes it's way into the game as well, with Jackie happily complimenting you on being able to defeat him, and encouraging you to continue if you lose a match. It's a bit surreal, but a change of pace is never a bad thing.
Instead of playing as Jackie though, you pick one of six fighters, choosing the order you fight the other opponents, and once two opponents are defeated it unlocks a boss fight against one version of Jackie Chan. You don't have to fight him immediately though, and can simply take on the other characters at your leisure before facing his different forms. Although the digitised actors might look like they've been picked straight off the street, five of them are actually martial arts actors or stuntmen, and most of them having started in Jackie Chan films, which is an extremely nice touch all things considered. The guy in the dragon costume is just there are comedic effect, unsurprising as that is.
This game was actually developed by Kaneko, who also developed the underwhelming Shogun Warriors. There was also an update to this game which made the three Jackie Chan characters selectable by the player, but that version of the game nerfed them considerably, and so they lost their status as true bosses. As a result, I thought I'd cover them here to see them in their oft broken glory.
This game is pretty good. It's damn hard, yet also surprisingly decent. Combos and special moves come off without a hitch, and are generally pretty easy to do. Rounds are short, with high-damage attacks being the norm, and it can be pretty brutal as a game to play, even though it is quite fun. The link I gave to the explanation of the game and its mechanics explains it much better than I ever could. As a character, Project A Jackie is actually the worst of the bosses, with an anti-air move which isn't very useful, and a projectile attack which always seems to leave him countered. His special moves therefore aren't dramatically useful, and his combos seem lacking in power compared to the other two forms of Jackie. Not fantastic as a boss, but still certainly interesting for what it is. And hey, you get to play as Jackie Chan! What more could you want?
