Prince of Persia 2 Macintosh Longplay Playthrough

The game takes place eleven days after the events of the first game. During this period, the Prince was hailed as a hero who defeated the evil Jaffar. He turns down all riches and instead asks for the Princess' hand in marriage as his reward, to which the Sultan of Persia reluctantly agrees. The game begins as the Prince enters the royal courts of the palace. Before he enters, his appearance changes into that of a beggar. Nobody recognizes him and, when he attempts to speak with the Princess, a man who shares his appearance (Jaffar, who is magically disguised) emerges from the shadows, ordering him to be thrown out. With guards pursuing him, the Prince jumps through a window and flees the city by way of a ship.

15:56 I'm amazed this part here made it past playtesting. The whole game you are meant to delay and avoid skeletons and now suddenly this particular skeleton you have to kill in this super specific, no room for error, kind of way.

Jordan Mechner (creator of Prince series) wrote a detail plot of Prince 2 SnF for developers. The pdf is available in internet. As per the document, the flying heads were meant to be of both men and women and even including children! In the mac version the heads with short hair are supposedly male while in ms dos version, all heads are female.

Interesting to see the inspiration for the Sands of Time trilogy. I can see the forerunners to the Dark Prince (originally a doppelganger early in Two Thrones' development), the vizier (who is the doppelganger in this game), Farah (the princess) and possibly Kaileena (through the witch at the end). Warrior Within even recycled this game's broken sword idea. Perhaps the Two Thrones would have closer matched this game, if the developers had not changed the Two Thrones as much in the development cycle.

Thanks for this upload 🙏 Back in the days when Apple wasn’t so popular - even now, gaming-wise, it’s not the case. But I distinctly remember feeling blessed to experience Prince of Persia 2 (POP2) on my trusty Mac LCIII. The graphical superiority of POP2 and its predecessor, coupled with Marathon outshining DOOM for us Mac users, made our gaming world truly unique. Comparing POP2 to POP1, the visuals were a marvel on my Mac LCIII, creating a more beautiful gaming landscape. However, the gameplay unfolded like a captivating yet slightly chaotic dance - not always in sync. Despite its stunning graphics, POP2 felt rushed and had its share of quirks. Still, I find myself yearning for a POP3, a conclusion to the original story with the hero we know and love, blending the cohesiveness of POP1 with the beauty of POP2 in the same 2D style. That's a dream I still hold onto. In the gaming landscape where Apple wasn't the primary player, those moments with POP2, POP1, and Marathon on my Mac felt like having exclusive tickets to a captivating show. Good times indeed!

The spider terrified me when I fell through several floors and died in front of it. Scariest thing I'd ever seen in a game, and I knew I'd have to face it if I ever made it all the way down. Also the screaming and thuds were perturbing lol

Yes, I played the MS-DOS version as a 10 year old when it first came out in 1993. Even at that age the flying heads freaked me out a little bit. They made frequent appearances in my dreams at night. Definitely not a game for very young children. My computer didn’t have a sound card yet in 1993 either, so all the music and sound effects came through the PC Speaker. I’ll never forget the first time I opened a gate inside the ruins. The high pitched pulsing sound effect scared the crap out of me and I thought I had triggered some kind of head summoning device. It wasn’t until I understood the sound to be an off screen gate opening and closing in another room that I calmed down. The digitized gate sound effect is so much less jarring than the PC Speaker version. The PC Speaker version almost sounds like an alarm going off. The high pitched pulsing is reminiscent of the shower music in Hitchcock’s Psycho. Totally unsettling until you figure out why your computer is making that noise.

I agree. It was much darker and had some very scary and sad moments. Even the intro cutscene where you see Jafar’s metamorphosis as the “Prince” looking angry as the real Prince breaks free and jumps out the window.

I would hesitate to say that it looks significantly better on the Mac even. Yes, the Mac version has higher resolution, but lacks the color depth of the DOS version. The DOS version utilized all 256 colors, but the Mac version had to set aside part of the palette for the Mac system interface. In total, the Mac version only utilized somewhere around 230-240 colors (a ballpark guess). Also, the Mac version didn’t utilize the full 640x480 screen resolution. It had a black frame around a centered picture, similar to what you see in Myst or Riven. Overall, the DOS implementation was far superior, especially if you use a Roland CM-32L for the music like I do.

I really wish someone would reverse-engineer Mac version of both PoP and PoP2 and re-release them to other platform like Windows and Linux. I know we have SDLPop but it's ported from DOS version in which graphics is hugely cheaper and the port isn't compatible with Mac version's game assets.

Well... almost. I prefer the DOS version of those flying heads. They also have a loud shriek when they detect you. They also have a loud cry when they die that make you feel sad for killing them.

The performance is equally poor on both, as compared to PoP 1. You are sure to miss a tile at least once in the game while doing a running jump on PoP 2. The difference is between life and death.

It was fairly difficult. I got it in November 1993 when I was 10 but didn’t beat it until May 1995 shortly before I turned 12. In kid years, that’s a really long time.

Small black bars on the top and the bottom are result of PoP2's hardcoded resolution. That's why the best way to play is just vMac with enabled magnification. Black bars aren't visible in the video because of OBS settings, not the emulator's. You can try other emulators like BasiliskII or Sheepshaver, there is also an option to compile a custom version of vMac, but the problem is more on the game's side.
