Saturday 11th March 2017 was another special day when 5043 was on the Red Dragon to Cardiff. With permission from our friends at Jacobs Antique Market Tea Rooms; on the top floor, we, along with other enthusiasts/photographers caught the arrival/departure and light engine move to Newport. Also in these edited clips we see a GWR Green HST, 66186/084 Round Oak to Margam, Red DB 60021 steel coils. Final clip is at St Athan with 66129 Grange Sidings to Port Talbot coal.

Thanks Colin. The lady who runs the tea room is always pleased to see new customers. It's a good antique market too. Obviously a short walk from the station.

Congratulations on a really good video. The filming location at Jacobs Antique Market Tea Rooms is excellent and the quality of your filming was first class - as usual! All the comings and goings at Cardiff Central made it look very busy.

What a fantastic variety of trains caught on camera on this particular day. The Earl looks very impressive. And how dare that class 150 attempt to block the shot at the end! Lol

Did anyone notice that the Train had 11 coaches on? Unlike the mickey mouse so called high speed trains of today, with their 8 coaches behind 2,225 horse powered twin diesel power cars at each end.In my day when I left B.R; in 1981 after 19 years service, [ 1962-1981 ] We had two train to London from Cardiff every hour. Both trains had 11 to 14 coaches on board, and NOBODY stood. Everyone had seat's On the very rare occasion there were full Capacity? The Guard would let people get in the nearly empty First Class free of charge!Robert in Cardiff.

Further to your personal comments; we like steam in the UK because we invented them and built most of them too !.There are 100s in the UK and most weekend steam specials run for the public to ride on and video too.

,Nice video, Mike. But, what were those engine men thinking about, all that steam and smoke going under the canopies. Then opening the drain cocks after the short stop. They would certainly have had a good talking to by the stationmaster when I used to work it 60years ago. The blower would have been turned on to ensure the fire burnt the coal smoke while in the platform, and the injectors on to stop it blowing off.

Right on every point Brian. This never happened when I was a spotter in the 1950s. Trouble is, for we photographers it makes spectacular images, if you're not too near. That's why I tend to stay off the platforms.............thanks for your input................Mike

Lovely video great detail and steady shots when zoomed in. The steam "blast" when setting off seems a common thing recently and must screw things up for the platform video's, thought for a moment Arriva were going to block your view

That's why I take so much time to plan my viewing points in Cardiff. It's a very busy station and many have had their views blocked by other services departing. Steady hand is important when tripods are inconvenient for passing shots...............thanks for watching..I have over 400 in this collection.................Mike

Another very successful action packed production Mike, thought that 150 was going to spoil the departure of the Earl, but it was fine in the end....Bob

I could see this was going to happen so I moved, one reason why I don't always use a tripod. Someone else had come from Bristol and his shot was ruined.......................part of the fun ??

There's a triangle of track at Maindee, Newport, where steam locos reverse to turn and face east. Look on Google Maps at the layout. Depots such as Canton don't have turntables and mainline steam is not allowed to travel tender first at speed....OK?

That damn steam engine nearly spoilt your video of the 150. As the 150 wasn't in any hurry to get away I'll bet you a pint of SA that the driver had his mobile in his left hand. Check it out in super zoom mode mike.
