If you have a severely disabled child who cannot care for themselves and you leave them money in your will when you die, that child will lose any government benefits they get. To avoid this, people leave money in something called a Henson Trust for that child. Because the severely disabled person doesn't own the money outright, they don't lose access to their government benefits. Now that trust will pay the much higher tax and the disabled person will have less money to survive on. Also, if you die and you have children under age 18, they cannot inherit money directly, so it goes into a trust, and now that trust will be taxed at a higher rate. Imagine having your parents die when you're five and now a huge chunk of the money they left you goes to the government. This tax increase affects some of the most vulnerable in our society but JT and the CBC would have you believe it only affects the rich.
