I use one of these 50mm heads since nearly a year now regulary on my minilathe, my bigger lathe (300kg) and on my mill and am quite satisfied. They do a good job if you know how to treat them and if not there's KZbin and such nice guys as Steve explaining it to us greenhorns.......Thank You Steve :-)

Thanks Steve, That works well, keep forgetting about headstock boring like that. My finance department has tightened the screws lately so I have to wait a while to make some more purchases. Cheers

That boring head looks like a good option in the tail stock with a simple dead center in it for taper turning

Good tool review Steve but how can you fit an MT3 adapter into your Chinese mini lathe now with spindle drive. Cheers Peter
@arcanix516 жыл бұрын
might get a better finish with a slower feed on the outward cut. ... perhaps even on the inward before you spring cut on the outward.

How small of a bore will the tool do? I'm setting up to make my own RC parts so a tool like this would be handy to have

Sadly it looks like Banggood don't do a MT2 adapter anymore. Sad times.

can you attach that boring head straight to a er32 collect chuck?

When using the minilathe, for boring, why did you use the mt3 instead of the mt2 collet ?
@SteveJordan4 жыл бұрын
The Chinese Mini Lathe spindle is MT3. The Myford lathe is MT2.

@@SteveJordan thanks Steve, I have and old mini lathe 90s that came with the mt2 . I ordered the same part 50mm boring bar with the mt2.. Thank you for the great instructional videos. Can't wait to try out the new boring head!

Hi Trevor. I bought mine here. The size I bought was 3" x 2" x 250MM Long. As I cut mine to length from that. You can get a quote from them to have a shorter piece cut if you message them. This is good quality bright mild steel and it machines better than standard mild steel.. Hi Steve what quick change tool post do you recommend for the ml7 I have seen your post on machining the saddle down and that wouldn't be a problem, regards Trev.

I have the Dixon Quick Change which I got on EBay. I have just ordered the Machifit piston type from China for the new toolpost and will use the Dixon on the compound slide. The Dixon ones are good but because they are made in India they vary a bit. I had to make new adjusters for several of mine. They are still good though.

Hi Steve, not sure about the effect of wear on the spindle bearings from boring large holes, the eccentric COG could be balanced by inserting a shanked 12mm bolt with head removed into the side hole, then add 12mm lock nuts to balance as required

Hi Steve. Newbie question here but is the draw bar needed to hold the tool in place? i thought the taper was supposed to do this? And what does the back side of the draw bar look like. Is the plastic bush just spinning around against the casting on the lathe back there? Using the feed screw in revers for the return cut was new to me, very neat how I can pick up tiny bits like this :) I only did a boring operation once before and I did notice it was rough to get a good finish. I used the lead screw to feed in then manually out. I will try your method next time.
@SteveJordan6 жыл бұрын
Hi Auarhau...the bush is held tight against the rear face of the spindle. With MT tapered tools particularly for milling tools like this boring head it is best to have a draw-bar to stop the chance of the taper slipping and for added safety. I only use the reverse lead-screw method like I have shown, if I can't move the boring bar off of the cut to reverse. In ordinary lathe boring, on the finish diameter cut, I move the tool off at the end of forward travel, before winding the tool back to get really good finishes. So it only cuts on the forward movement. Regards Steve

If you back off and the tapper slips and catches again you can brake your insert. If the tapper slips the tool folder will fall out and brake the insert. If the tapper slips and a chip falls in the tapper your adjustment will be off. I can keep going for hours or use a drawbar and concentrate on working the boring out.

I recently bought a 75 mm boring head from Alibaba. Man, what seriously bad quality? I haven't used it yet because I first have to fix it. The sliding part has got a 0.35 mm play. It can be moved this much by hand. Utter rubbish.

A Bang good boring head is the only one that makes only sqyare holes right out of the box. I needs to get another for round holes.
