Hi Joanie. As a fairly newcomer into photography, with only about a years experience, I honestly can't tell the difference and therefore could never justify 5 times the price compared to the Canon 1.8. I like your honest approach and really appreciate that watching your videos make me feel that my gear is sufficient and I don't have have to spend thousands of dollars (or euros) on gear that wont make a difference to me.

Great honest review. And I just like to add to this, that those lines with the 50mm can be fixed in Photoshop with the healing, spot removal, fill tool options etc. So the nifty 50 is always the best way to go.

I love this comparison and truly think it depends on where your photos are ending up. At first glance it was, "okay, I see a slight difference but, I don't know where that difference is coming from". I have found that the nifty fifty is coming in so handy. I'm actually doing a challenge where I only use the nifty fifty for everything I shoot which is mainly landscape and actually love it especially for just how small it is! Love the video. Happy 50k!

Not only isn’t it worth splurging, but the differences are so negligible that 10 seconds in Lightroom would make them identical. I love shooting, but I’m also an editing fanatic. It’s a skill that’s worth more than a pricey lens, & it levels the playing field.
@evelasq1

The reason for the creamier effect is the fact if you are shooting wide open than you would get a shallow depth of field. The F1.4 would give a little bit more of shallow depth of field than a F1.8. But I must warn you about Sigma Lenses. I have learned from someone that the Sigma has never outlasted ten years and the aperture would fail. A Nikon lens would last much longer than the Sigma Lenses. Maybe you should look into the Tamron 45mm F1.8 lens. I have watched one good review from the Angry Photographer on KZbin on this Tamron Lens. Right now, I own only Nikon lenses. Peace, Flood!

Just adding a seed of my end as a fashion photographer. Yes at up close there are not much different however; I do use my 50mm as a fashion photographer and wow is there a difference. That 50mm at 1.4 is stellar on sharpness and bokeh is like silk. Is fixed in my lense pack.

Great video. In my opinion, the point that is primarily being missed is that all those photos are meant to be shown to general public for business purposes. They do not get the difference between a pic taken from 949USD lens and a 100USD lens. A business suddenly will not get more sales and that is the point.
@AtlantaTerry
@AtlantaTerry 6 жыл бұрын
Another factor to consider with any lens to be used mainly for photographing food: how close will it focus? For example, an inexpensive lens might only focus to about 3 feet while an expensive lens might allow you to be as close as 1 foot.

The Sigma is a decidedly better lens in every regard, in the right application. For this which is a fairly close shot where the background is really part of the story as opposed to say, a portrait in front of a building or a backdrop of trees where there's markedly more information that can draw the eye away from the subject, a Sigma won't produce a huge difference. The more distraction in a background, the more pronounced the difference. You'll see a difference in sharpness, contrast, and subject separation compared to less expensive lenses between f1.4 and f4. There's also a massive difference for video and low light shooting where it pulls in much more light yet remains very sharp. I use the Canon 40mm 2.8 and Sigma 50mm 1.4 and like both, but they run in different circles.

It's called (pronounced) Moi-ray , it from the French Moiré And there is is more to lens than "sharpness" (like microcontrast, light fall off/vignetting etc.) but the main question is, did a customer ever complaint to you about that lens of any of your pictures being not sharp enough, sharpness fall off in the corners, micro contrast, cause if you turn into that road you might as well bring a big bag of money. Main thing is, the lens should fit the purpose of the shot.

@RS Your comments sounds SO extremely pretentious. The video's purpose was simple: you can use a canon 1.8 to shoot good photos. You don't have to invest in an expensive lens when you're just getting started. For people getting into photography, that's excellent advice. They're not going to be too concerned about "microcontrast". All you really said is there's a lot more to quality than sharpness, which is already common sense. Also, in french it's pronounced Moi-ray, but as the word became popular in the U.S. , it's pronunciation shifted and like many words from europe, there is now a second "americanized" way of saying it as well. So neither yourself or the person in the video are incorrect. Do some research next time before trying to correct someone please.

All of you criticizing her for making an educated comment and correcting her grammar; who's more pretentious? Some clients will ask for the latest and greatest gear and this will make or break the deal. Sigma lenses are known to be sharper but also known to have less character and micro-contrast. If this is not true then vintage lenses wouldn't be as expensive and valuable as they are today.

5:16 yes i do see it on the muffins in the foreground. 7:10 i see it again, much sharper. the question is do you want to spend the money and do you need it. no you dont need it for instagram pics. i have both a canon 50mm f1.8 (rebel camera) and a sigma on my fullframe Nikon. love both.

The nifty 50 is great and only an obsessive like myself would notice the difference. The one thing I have be cautious with is shooting at minimum focal distance. With my camera & lens setup while shooting it will affirm correct focus & look sharp yet going into edit it is clearly soft. If with the next shot I back off just a bit and give it more space then everything is fine. Who’s to say whether it’s a camera or lens issue. Anyway it’s hardly an issue to get concerned with. Love the lens.

Brilliant video! Do not get me wrong I love decent glass BUT I do not feel the Sigma justifies that price jump at all in IQ. Perhaps if printing on a large format you might notice but both look great! Its a similar tale on the Sony system with their 50mm 1.8 being heavily critisised but in reality the difference of a lens 10x the price is maybe 5% or less increase in IQ.

I suppose it comes down to the law of diminishing returns. You would probably have to spend a considerable amount more to notice a tangible improvement in anything, ergo 500$ is a lot for a small margin. However, I guess it's the combinations of all these small margins that make a difference, these 1%s add up eventually, the extra stop of light, the smoother bokeh etc . I have both lenses by the way and both are great :-)

I literally just made the jump 2 weeks ago from my tried and true Canon 1.8 to the Sigma 1.4. I've rocked the Canon for 5+ years and love it. The only reason I upgraded is A. for events and portraits the Canon was just too loud. And most of all B. I could afford the Sigma. I am probably keeping my Canon since it's such a small, wonderful lens, and I'll keep it for quick travel trips, if it ever breaks, barely any money would be lost, but my heart just might. For now though, love the Sigma, they really outdid themselves.

Even though I am no photographer I came to love camera's when I was in the Army & saw the combat photographers with their Nikon F3s & F4s & the abuse they took was so impressive to me that of coarse I had to have both those camara's even though they are so above my pay grade so I'll settle on the 50mm for now although if I picked up the Art sense I would come up with some reason why I would have to buy it. BTW I love lemon poppy seed muffins & boy did those look great. Thank you for your terrific video, I just subscribed to your channel.

Of course, in optimal conditions (in a home studio with good lighting, and using a speedlight) you won't tell these apart that much. When you can tell them apart is in difficult situations. A scene with trees in the background for example - the bokeh would look a lot worse on the nifty 50. Another example is shooting at night - I actually found the nifty fifty would seek focus too long and even fail to focus, where as with the Sigma f/1.4 it would work perfectly, handheld, at night.

By looking at this image I can tell right away the sigma is sharper at 1.8 than the canon. It is pretty normal for a lens to be a bit off focus at its wider aperture especially if they go as big as 1.2, 1.4 or 1.8. However the canon f/1.4 beats both of these lenses at F/1.8 so just a suggestion in case you are a canon snob like me haha

The Sig Art is better yes. But OMG that nifty is mighty close, talk about bang for buck. Like your-self I forked out for the better lens mainly because I could at the time. At F1.8 for your sample muffin photos the difference in sharpness is very marginal. Of course the Sigma lens is better but only by a small amount. there is slight better sharpness with it in detail capture. The Sigma rocks though, when used at F1.4! The fabric detail and the front muffin in focus has more noticeable sharper detail to the trained eye and better smoother bokeh with Sigma. Someday, I may own one. Thanks for a very effective review!

A hard no for me unless it goes to print. Like you said, it is a nice and beautiful toy but for social media where images get attention for about 2 seconds it is a total overkill. i want to add my 2 cents... the Sigma Art is a specific lens... it IS designed to be shot at 1.4 it is optimized at that aperture... I spent the extra money as you said for the extra sharpness and definitively that 1.4 aperture... very rarely i stop down the lens. But you DO have an awesome point... IDENTIFY your channel outlet... print or digital and where ( web or print) is going tobe displayed those shoule be the criteria for selection ... if you are going to stick to online ... the 1.8 should be more than enough... if you are going for print...like me... i want that extra bit of bokeh.

I think with camera/lens investments, invest in the lower end (budget) to learn your craft. If you light and present your shots well you ought to attract business via website portfolios that lead to paid work, and the money you get paid can go towards upgrades. In essence let your clients pay for your kit. And your initial investment is kept minimal so you don't have as much money to recuperate.

It is a French word so: forvo.com/word/moir%C3%A9/ Did you calibrate the lenses in camera or did you use manual focus? Because if you use the autofocus the nifty fifty needs that in camera calibration to be sharp most of the time.

Greetings from Anaheim CA! I really like your comparison video. If you have the STM version of the nifty fifty, it's also great for video work. The motor is very silent and focuses quicker than the older versions. But in defense of the Art lenses, they're really sharp and renders colors beautifully. I have the 35 Art and a Canon 50 1.2L and both a have a place in my camera bag.
