Although I agree with some of your assertions, what lens a photographer uses depends on how he sees the world around him/her. I have been a photographer for nearly 40 years so I do have some experience. I know some photographer who find the perspective a 50mm offers most pleasing, others including myself see the world through a slightly wider perspective 35mm~ 40mm to be exact. A few that I know prefer 28mm. So, much depends on how you see the world.

I think that some people naturally gravitate towards a focal length that is comfortable to them but they need to be careful of 'stubbornness' and an unwillingness to learn a new length. It is not a pleasing experience to change from a focal length you're comfortable with to a new one, you initially do poorly with that new foreign length and are often left disappointed. What needs to be cemented more is that there's no such thing as a bad focal length, only that the user is not as adept at using that length (yet). Persistence and practice will allow for that new length to become familiar and better results will come. Be kind to yourself. I think what really shows is when a tog begins to master that focal length, they start to see the world in 50mm shades or 28mm or whatever, but they have become experts in showcasing that focal length so there is wisdom to be had in picking a length and mastering it for years.

You can also make a massive picture, which really brings out detail. 3-4x the data, with a tighter lense, in comparison to a wider single image is definitely going to look better. 😁👍

That technique works OK for reasonably distant views, that do not contain straight lines, but if one is really serious about panoramas, one should pivot the camera around the nodal point of the lens. There are devices to enable one to do that.

I'm sorry, but there is so much that is just wrong in this video. Perspective has absolutely nothing to do with focal length; it is ONLY related to subject distance. A 50mm lens is only "normal" on a FF sensor body; and that's because it records an ~ 55° diagonal FOV. 28mm is "normal" for 1.5x APS. If you stitch to create a wider FoV, you destroy the normality of the 50mm (on FF). "Cylindrical perspective" is caused by parallax; which most who stitch panos try very hard to avoid. The curved focal plane is not notably different from the field curvature a WA lens often exhibits (of minimal impact at long distances). And the curved focal plane result could very easily actually be a wavy focal plane/DoF if the lens in use has a field curvature characteristic. Avoiding parallax doesn't require switching to a WA lens and not stitching. It requires panning around the lens' nodal point. The two things that are true/correct are that stitching gives a higher MP/resolution image; and parallax looks bad when there is something in the image up close.

I f you need the same height as a 24mm lens, you will need a 35mm lens or else you will also need to stirch up and down with a 50mm. 24mm = 53 degrees vertical and 84 degrees horizontal, 35mm = 38 degrees vertical and 54 degrees horizontal, 50mm = 27 degrees vertical and 40 degrees horizontal

I mean yeah, you can shoot pano's and keep a relatively normal perspective. But the other focal lengths provide distortion & compression that you can use to your advantage when photographing that a 50mm just can't replicate (even when stitched into a vertical pano). To each their own though!

So what size sensor are you using with this 50mm? Is the lens intended for a full frame camera? If it is, and you use it on an APC sensor, then it will become closer to a 70 or 75m focal length.
@jimrinaldi8357
@jimrinaldi8357 11 күн бұрын
This can work well. I have used a 50mm on an APSC camera, equivalent to a 75mm on FF. The field of view is narrower so it requires more shots. The result is the final image has more pixels so is potentially sharper. Still, I prefer the using the 50mm on my full frame. Either can work well.

Nice video, thanks! Yesterday I took some landscape photography in the woods with my old Nifty Fifty. Although I am more comfortable with a wide angle lens (ie 35mm) using the 50mm it was fun and interesting. I’m a fan of panoramas and the 50mm focal length gives more natural and well-balanced images when attaching horizontal or vertical shots.

From 1936 to 1937 and from 1946 to 1971 when Canon's first interchangeable lens camera hit the market standard lens for 35mm photography was the 50mm. For 26 years the 50mm lens was king and millions upon millions of photos were taken with the 50mm. Kodak's earliest film cameras were just a bit over 50mm. Then it was abandoned when interchangeable hit the market. Photographers became lazy because the zoom lens took the walking out of equation of the prime lens. I might return to my roots and sell all my lenses except the 50s.

A stitched images with a 35mm will be more like a 24mm lens, so a 400mm are better in that way than a 50mm lens. 24mm = 53 degrees vertical and 84 degrees horizontal, 35mm = 38 degrees vertical and 54 degrees horizontal, 50mm = 27 degrees vertical and 40 degrees horizontal, so you can see that when a 35mm lens used for vertical (54 degrees) shots to make panoramas it is very close to the 24mm (53 degrees).

It’s not really mentioned in the video, and this isn’t exclusive to 50mm, but the really big advantage to stitching is that you can maintain that “compression” of 50mm while getting a “wider” final image. Explaining further; have you ever looked at old landscapes like Ansel adams, they used large format cameras. If you tried to get the same image with a full frame camera, you’d have to use a wide angle lens. The issue with a wide lens is that it will push your subject further away. Making it look smaller in your frame, big mountain ends up looking like small mountain. The wider the lens the more of a problem this is. Stitching lets you get that wide majestic shot while using a long lens so that your mountain doesn’t end up looking like a small hill. You could say that it lets you imitate the result you would have gotten from using a large or medium format camera.

While this may be a useful technique to use it has its limitations, if you are photographing and scene in which you can have a moving element like a ship coming out to sea or a seascape with waves taken multiple shots and stitching them together might not work, if you're shooting a sunrise or sunset at the ocean the lighting will change very quickly so that may give you problems and the focal length may not be long enough.

Well, if the wide-angle look is not for you, You could shoot in a grid pattern to have more detail to print large without having a large megapixel sensor. The technique is called Fake medium format with a DSLR if you want to just play around with a new technique if you never tried it.

just so I understand. You're saying take many photos with one lens, then stitch them together in post processing to give a perspective of a wider angle lens, which will be better than just using a single photo from a lens that captures that perspective? I have to admit I don't believe you and I'm sure many many many Professional Photographers would disagree with you.

@@TheSlantedLens Your basing everything you think you know on a myth. The human eye sees in 50mm. That is false. In addition Photography is art, with that being said if you feel that taking many pictures and stitching them together into a photograph that you never even took in the first place because you never actually seen what you are photoshopping together then ya thats cool. But like I said I just don't get how you can claim thats the best perspective.

This video may have been passable if it had been framed along the lines of ‘50mm is great for panoramas’, but to distill landscape photography down to ‘just shoot 50mm’ is absolutely absurd. As a professional landscape photographer, this is exactly why I despair of KZbin at times. Yes 50mm is useful for producing panoramas close to the human eye perspective, but to title ‘it’s all you need’ is clickbait gibberish being spouted by people nowhere near qualified enough to give an informed opinion. It’s why beginners that I see on workshops all the time now are starting out believing this nonsense because they see this crap on KZbin by someone who can produce a reasonably polished video and think it’s correct. Photography fast food nonsense which helps no-one.
@TheSlantedLens

No so. Many very accomplished landscape photographers use this approach and have very lucrative careers with it.
@StuartMcGlennon

@@TheSlantedLens if you’re suggesting many successful landscape photographers shot some of their panoramas at 50mm you’d be correct, that’s just common sense. If you’re saying as your title suggests and as you seem to imply in the video that all you need is a 50mm lens for landscape photography, well you’re talking nonsense.

The problem with this type of photography think that all you need is one lens for landscapes or events or any other types of photography this type requires time and more work on the computer and does not work for all types of landscape photography, not everyone wants to be tied to a tripod for each and every photo that they take and if you are working with a group they may not want to wait until you are finished taking 10 photos to make one picture that you can screw up if you're not careful enough with what you are doing.
