5150 poweramp 6l6 tubes shootout

Sovtek 6L6 WXT+ are the power tubes that EVH used in his live touring 5150 III amp heads. Not only are they powerful, but they are more clear in the low end than the standard JJ 6L6 tubes. I think they are the winner here, too!

personally i do dislike sovtek! too harsh and fizzy. Didn't bias amp - just using as is!

Did you ever get around to adding a bias mod? Because of the fixed bias thing in the 5150, you're not setting the tubes to their optimal or what not.

Harsh & fizzy is a bi-product of not biasing an amp which i also never heard a 5150 that wasn't harsh or fizzy. To be honest the differences in your shoot-out are too subtle to notice. MESA STR 430 are the Sovtek 6L6 WXT+, i have them in a Dual Rectifier and they are awesome.

These tubes are all going to read differently from each other. The 5150 is a fixed bias amp, so unless you have a bias mod in there, it's a bit difficult to compare. You could get another matched quad of the same tube and they'll sound a bit different. The video is cool and fancy, but to make it really really useful, you need to bias the amp and post the bias settings. At the same time, it's all a wishy washy thing because most 5150's don't have the mod installed... Some tube sellers will actually ask you what type of music you play, so they can select the tube and perhaps their inherent MA score. At least that why I think they ask you haha. With that said, the stock 5150 is intentionally biased cold. Some say it's for EVH crossover distortion, but it could also or rather be for reliability, to accept a wide range of tubes with different ratings and so the tubes last and don't get fried constantly, needing swaps or repairs or what not.

I've used all three of these tubes in my Ampeg v4b bass amp with a 215 cabinet it really depends with speakers you use and now the sovtek 6l6 wxt + sound good in my rig because its a bass amp looking for a little more definition through the two fifteens they were great saying that the Mesa Boogie 440 s are very consistent and I've been getting very good tone with them also the tonSol's on the other hand have failed several times they can't handle Higher Plate voltage which my amp is 473

mikewrightify I run an original 1993 peavey 5150 full stack original only thing I did was get all Mesa tubes 6l6 440 and 12x7 sounds amazing I don’t run any distortion or tube screamer pedals straight out of head and get questioned all the time how I get my tone I just run everything 6/6/6 I know crazy

Mesa tubes defiantly sound best in the original peavey 5150 when matched the the 6L6 and 12x7 🤘🤘

This comparison doesn't mean much because all tubes measure differently. You need to have the 5150 with a bias mod to compare directly. Even if the same brand/model tubes were used, they'd sound different, due to their ratings. The Sovtek's could simply have a colder bias. With that said, in other videos where I've heard the 440's, they sounded the most like sylvania/Phillips to me. The OG STR's still sound best, but the difference is very tiny. I think OG had more bass, which might not matter a whole lot, especially when high passing in recordings and using boosts to tighten the low end anyway.

The Mesa STR 440s are Shuguang...the same tube as the Ruby 6L6GC-MSTR.
