Sensei Vinicio's attention to detail and philosophies are truly fascinating and rather inspiring. He takes a realistic approach to traditional Karate, and uses it effectively for combat. And what better proof that it works than his student, Lyoto Machida, himself! OSS!

Fantastic Episode! I love how Sensei Antony gets back to the roots of traditional Karate, where all the effective techniques have been all along.

Kumite translates to grappling hands and karate to empty hand. The Kata's have a lot of grappling and control techniques like joint locks and take downs in them not strictly strikes. I believe traditional Karate was more diverse than you see today in the sparring more mma like.

@@Wessex90 Agreed the worst thing to happen to Karate is karateka turning into kickboxers when they spar ignoring at least half the techniques in Kata. Sparring should be more MMA style not kickboxing.

@timlinator
@timlinator 3 жыл бұрын
@@Wessex90 Karate dates back 1,500 years to Shaolin monastery, China created by Buddhist monks for self defense and exercise. Found its way to Okinawa where it evolved for the same reasons self defense and exercise, then to Japan where it was introduced into the school systems for exercise and discipline. It was not a sport until maybe 100 years ago when Japan first used it against Boxing in competition, hence the focus on striking in sparring. It became a sport for many but that is not its traditional purpose or the way I see it. Kata is about training your mind, body and spirt with combinations of self defense techniques while in motion and changing direction. The repetition is to build muscle memory. Karate is NOT a sport, it is really a way of life.

Thank you so much Sensei fir these awesome videos. I have done shotokan since 5 years old trained about 25years. Military addiction and injury stopped me training for many years. I in live in pain but started training again 2 months ago hoping my training will help with the pain. I use your videos as inspiration so thank you.

Having trained in Karate and BJJ I would agree a lot of the juijistu, judo, jujitsu techniques are the Kata's but the problem is most Karate schools don't train them outside the Kata. Bunkai is what that is for but most Karate schools short change it. Also point sparring is not realistic. Improve Karate with more Bunkai (application) and free style (jiyu kumite) sparring which should be more mma like to include all the techniques of Karate. For most schools sparring if they even do it is more like Kickboxing with point rules.

I have a second degree black belt in Karate, preparing for third degree test, and have also trained in Muay Thai and BJJ. I currently train in Karate and BJJ. I think the problem with Karate is point sparring which is sport rules not self defense. Karate has all the same techniques as kickboxing and then some but doesn't do well in mma typically because of point rules. Drop point sparring for free style (jiyu kumite) full contact and Karate will do well as seen by Machida Sensei. For self defense if taught the traditional way it works. Muay Thai has influenced the way I teach Karate and I continue to train in BJJ for the ground.

I really enjoyed this. Sensei obviously has extensive knowledge on karate-do. The part that I could relate to was the weight training and doing squats!! The quads are very important! Flexibility is important! And when you weight train he's right you keep explosiveness bc you're ligaments are ready to go. I also liked how he said don't blink! My Sensei will wait for guys to blink and when they do.. well you are hit before you know it 🤣

Great Journey. One question I have is have you ever seen a technique that you NEVER saw before? I mean completely new - not a variation of something u already knew. I ask this because (I think) Bruce Lee said something to the effect that unless u have 3 arms and 4 legs - there's only so much a human body can do. Thanks - great series by the way - u are truly a humble warrior.
