I think the locking ring was patented about 1950. The blueing he used contains mercury so keep it away from food especially any acidic foods or you may need to be treated for heavy metal poisoning. The bad news being that permanent damage may already have been done. Since I do use my knives on food I'd trash that thing if it was mine. I don't need a knife with a poison blade.
@Everythings_Adjustable5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Dwight! The internet is a great place to learn, Opinel added the ring in 1955, The Gun blue contains no Mercury, It's an acid that changes the surface of the steel once it has done it's job and then cleaned off it is safe to use.
@3npitsu9924 жыл бұрын
Yup, the blue patina is oxide, like the one that you get from heating it up to 700 C

That's an interesting sharpening "stone" block with different grit sides you used... what kind is that ? Looks like it comes with a tray for collecting water and residue ? Great job on the knife... Those opinel knives make for fun projects... I just customized an Opinel No.8 with a Sambar stag roll... had so much fun with that, I picked up an old used No.7 to also do, but it has a little surface rust and pitting... thinking on trying your techniques for cleaning up the blade !

It's rather coincidental that you put this up just days after I found an old opinel knife in the kitchen which needs some TLC as well. Was there a reason you decided not to remove the blade entirely? Lovely job by the way.
@Everythings_Adjustable5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, no real reason I didn't think I needed to but to be honest the finish on the blade close to the handle isn't as good as the rest of the blade but it does make it easier to work on the edge when there's a handle to hold

If you add up all the little bits and pieces I used to do it.... It's cost me 50 quid 😀 😁 I remember ruining a brass tube years ago before running it in reverse, I think I need to find a very blunt countersink and keeping it just to do these as that one is still a bit sharp for this job 👍

"You removed the patina from the handle and screwed it up, you have a habit of torturing the Opinel handle, if it is perfect originally, don't token it" Ricardoa, Thanks for your comment, I hope this translates well, The finish on the handle isn't perfect for me, it creates hot spots on my hand, I like the handle to feel smooth in my hand and pocket, also easy to open, I finish the handle with bees wax which is a nicer finish than the varnish, it is waterproof, feels nice in hand, and easy to repair Ricardoa, gracias por tu comentario.
