The issue is, channelling will be occurring with the spouted portafilter as well but you just can't see it. That's why a bottomless portafilter is good, as it allows you to perfect the technique which ultimately will lead to you pulling better shots regardless of the portafilter

The hole diameter on the bottomless portafilter basket is bigger than the Breville's. I think I have the same issue ... flow becomes faster (less pressure) if you keep all parameters the same. I swapped the Breville's basket on to Bottomless one, and my shot improved a bit.

As a past espresso shop owner, you easily are teaching me some techniques & your simply enjoyable to watch! As we know that the art of espresso has evolved & will continue to, & there is always new tools & tips to learn in order to perfect the best extraction. I remember baristas used to tap the commercial portafilter with the tamper after they dosed it & before they tamped it, & we discovered beneath it would cause hairline fractures/cracks inside the fullness in the coffee in portafilter, disrupting the water flow in those areas where the “cracks” were allowing too quick of extraction in the areas. These habits were learned from other baristas showing them , & it became a bad habit that wasn’t known to be a bad habit. That’s incredible these great tools like the doser ring/funnel, & your little gadget to fluff the grounds are so intuitive!! I love seeing evolution & there’s nothing better or more enjoyable then espresso & making your own. It’s an amazing learning experience & a must of you appreciate espresso! Thanks for all your expertise! Glad I found your channel!

Great video - thanks for posting. I have recently bought a bottomless portafilter and have the exact same machine as you, and also use the distributor tool. However when I use the bottomless one, the coffee spits out of the bottom, often shooting in different directions and making a mess, rather than one single smooth flow into the cup. The majority goes into the cup, but little bits spit out and make a mess. It still tastes good and the grind looks metre thing always stays within the grey area - so I know it’s a pretty good quality shot. But any idea why it spits so much and what I can do to prevent it? Thank you

I noticed the bottomless only ran for 11 seconds ( i timed it ) that's way too fast. Should be somewhere around 20 to 30 seconds which means for the bottomless you might have to adjust the grind finer or tamp harder.

I would like Crema to make a wood handled regular portafilter. I love the beauty of the wood on my bottomless, but honestly, the mess is frustrating. I do really love the ease of cleaning the bottomless, though. It's so much easier, not that the regular portafilter is difficult. I'm having a ton of trouble with my Barista Express built in grinder, but don't have the funds to splurge on a fancy grinder. Do you have a recommendation of an affordable (say $150 range) grinder? Or should I just start saving up for the one I really want?

Love your content Hoon and it was the best resource on the web for me to get going with Barista Express! Here's a question I've been wondering about. As far as top burr settings the BBE ships with it set at 6 and mine has been at 6 the whole time. I now have my current favorite settings on the side set at 2 for a dark roast I am using and at 1 for a medium roast I am also using. I think on another one of your videos you said you have your top burr set to 5. So my question is - if I went down to 5 - where would I start on my fine settings. Would I go all the way up to 16? Or is there some overlap such that a setting of 1 with top burr set to 6 is like a setting of 8 with top burr set to 5? I can think of an obvious corollary to shifting on bikes where when you change the big chain ring up front you don't necessarily start all the way at the beginning with the cogs on the back. I suspect that there is possibly some overlap here. What are your thoughts? Thanks again and keep up the great content!!!

How do you get your bottomless to work like that through this machine?! I can’t get anywhere near the espresso pressure range with my bottomless. Spent 20 mins on a call with the people at Breville trying to figure it out and they were rude and saying it would never work with a bottomless… to the point where I hung up on them cause they kept telling me it won’t work, but clearly it does. Just an observation .. what's the advantage of a bottomless when you take your metal spoon and mix up your espresso anyway? I've got a thing about touching crema with everything except my mouth. I also pull a shot with just water and dry before my espresso. Instead of using your declumping tool .. what do you think about a dosing cup and shaking vigorously? The barista in my area they have a dosing cup that fits perfectly over the portafilter in addition to having that $1,000 Puqpress.
