We couldn't afford a Schwinn, but I had a sweet Sears Spyder (Christmas of '68). It was a great time to be a kid. The bikes, Hot Wheels,TV shows, etc... We had paper routes, did chores, had real Gym class, even a school nurse. In the the summer we went out in the morning and played outside until dark, sometimes after. Now I collect these muscle bikes and redline Hot Wheels and often find myself listening to those same tunes we all heard on AM radio on my playlists. I actually got several while stationed at Ellsworth AFB at Rapid City South Dakota. I had an old Schwinn 5 speed with 27 inch wheels. I was trained to ride mountain bikes so a street bike was like riding a feather. The best I ever got was 47 in a 25 zone. I only knew one speed on a bike and that was wide open and flat out! All of my tickets got disposed of. I had that old bike up in the 50 to 60 mph range on downhills. I was challenged by one of the cops for a bike race from one side of the base to the other, about 4 miles. He lost. All those years of hard falls and abuse took their toll though. I'm 63 now and have been 100% disabled since I was 50. But how many people can look back and smile at the fact they routinely got speeding tickets on a bicycle. The First Sergeant just used to say... Great video. Question? Making a wide right turn pulling 35 mph. IDK about that speedometer. Prove me wrong.
@pagb228 жыл бұрын
Cool vid! I made a quick conversion; these speedometers are usually conceived for wheels 26-28". So they give an approximation of the real speed as they are not specific to one size. Since it's connected to a 20 inch wheel, it means the wheels make more rotations than the wheels for which the speedometer was designed. According to my calculation, your real speed is in approximately 42-43 mph, WHICH IS INSANELY FAST ON THIS TYPE OF BIKE (any bike actually) !!!!! I didn't do that to pop your bubble. I just think when the truth is already amazing, there is no need to exaggerate it. If you want to keep track of your real speed, just multiply what you see by 0.77.
@billworley87278 жыл бұрын
My bubble is not popped. These Huret made speedometers were designed to work with all sorts of wheel diameters. To be accurate, they require the appropriate hub(driver) installed on front wheel. These drivers utilize a worm gear pitched to the wheel size specified by the embossed hub housing. These drivers were produced for 16", 20", 24", 26", as well as some metric sizes. I have the correct 20" unit installed.

For what it's worth, it takes me an hour to mentally prep for these kinds of runs, and a full hour or more to get adrenaline most of the way out of me. 40 MPH doesn't have that effect. I was a bit surprised at the difference between 45 and 50.

It is a Schwinn approved squared off 2.125 reproduction slick on the rear. Because of this tire, the bike accelerates in the turns better than say a rounded tire. Less rubber making contact. The people that study the physics of this sort of thing use the term 'coefficient of drag'.

I call BS, maybe 35 mph. He needs to have that speedo calibrated!
@STV-H4H3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I can’t believe this is true. I think the bike was mounted to the side of a car or something. There is some spots where the side to side wobble suggests peddling, but to be peddling that fast, doesn’t jive with the motion, and no way could a single speed 16 or 20” size bicycle be pedaled above maybe 30-35mph. So a free wheel down a steep hill, is the engine driving such speeds. A vid showing evidence that an actual rider is in control, that’s the smoking gun needed to prove this. I can imagine a teenager attempting this in actual practice. I’ve ridden 21 speed road bikes upwards of 50, but on a single (or even 5 speed) Schwinn, bullshit.
@mikekrol74853 жыл бұрын
No. That was definitely 50. Every biking video appears slower than real life. Same with downhills. They never look steep until you see it in person. Check out Farlow Gap in Pisgah Forest N.C. The video lies.

I so wish you could trust those old mechanical speedometers. I have had a few over the years and found them all to be....... well let's say optimistic.

Ahh! This brings me back! I never got anywhere near that speed when I was a kid, but it sure felt that way sometimes! My long road down the hill ended up in the woods in a dried up creek bed that we used for ramps and jumps.

i think he might have the wrong ratio for his rim size to get that reading....he is flying no doubt about that but idk abut freeway speeds on a bike....on the drive unit there is the size that one might have a 27 inch drive unit on a 14 or 18 inch rim....but dammm i want to know how fast he really is going

There was this hill by my house in the 70s and I had a Schwinn Bantam. Got it up to 40mph indicated, which felt really sketchy. Hit a rock with the back wheel and somehow didn't wreck. Did the same hill on a Raleigh Record Ace a few years later and got the needle to 50. Bicycles feel so unstable at those speeds. Fun though haha

That speedo is probably more accurate than most cars!

Got a stingray as soon as they came out, don’t remember the year or my age, but I’m 69 now What an awesome, fun bike, spent about 70% of the time riding only on the rear tire!

Its just an out of calibration speedometer. Every kid in the world has done this. I know I did! He's doing 30mph give or take 5mph. Get a GPS and make the same run.
@billworley87277 жыл бұрын
I did just that with Strava. Speedometer is as accurate as these old analog units ever were, which is actually pretty good. They were well made. I have a number of these on various Schwinn bikes including Stingrays, middleweights, and Varsitys'. I also have a number of other vintage brand speedometers mounted to various Murray and Huffy 'muscle bike ' platforms. I know my speedometers. I know my bikes. I know how fast I ride. My friends know fast I ride. These vids are posted just for fun. I'm not promoting some sort of 'record'. These are just for fun...
@adriangeorgescu81986 жыл бұрын
I second that, the Hurets are very accurate. Inside they are exactly like analogue car speedos, most likely made with the same tooling, thus the same kind of precision. They even went the extra mile to make calibrated driving units for different wheel sizes such as 16", 20" and 26". I tested a metric Sachs-Huret and a VDO against a GPS and both were within 5kph at 40 kph.

Brother, that's one hell of a loooong hill!!!!
@leonstancliff72183 жыл бұрын
I would really like to see that on a GPS device rather than a generic bike speedometer fitting for any tire from 16"-26". I suspect you were actually doing around 35mph.
@ryanthompson28933 жыл бұрын
Look at how fast everything is moving around him. That’s clearly around 40 to 45.

Rode a bicycle from the summit of Pikes Peak to the bottom and hit at least 55 mph a few times. The bike didn't have a speedometer but I've ridden motorcycles all my life and can tell how fast I'm going on two wheels pretty accurately. It was a blast!

That gage is way off. I cant get my Carbon road bike to 55 mph down hill. Plus no way you need to pedal at 40 mph because your pedals would be useless.

You can find a Schwinn approved speedometer on those copper colored Schwinn stationary bikes from the 70s. I've parted out at least 4 over the years. Best part is speedometer but you can also use the chain, handgrips, crank bearings and seat. I always disassemble those completely and save all the nuts and bolts for bike projects down the road. That way if you build a nice Schwinn the fasteners look authentic.

It ain’t old school but you can always throw an iPhone on the handlebars with a speedo app to calm the people down in the comment section who think this isn’t real

I used to peddle a Mongoose straight chain and sprocket, no gears 40+ and used the built in sprocket breaks. Had fully greased everything first, but I was a daily rider back then, had to peddle fast or get ran over. Peeled off a lot of back tires stopping for red lights.
@1956model13 жыл бұрын
I'm a little sceptical. Just because a bicycle speedometer indicates 55 MPH, isn't proof that you were actually doing 55. Now if you'd mount a GPS right next to the speedometer and it showed the same speed.....
