At 1:48 there is a nice example of a dry joint. You see how three of them are shiny and one kind of dull. That one needs to be reflowed, just heat it up again. It should be shiny. This is what causes many electronic devices to fail as those joints eventually stop conducting.

The NE555 is set up as an astable oscillator. Pin 5, the input, is the "Control Voltage". If this voltage is altered (i.e. from the AM sound input) the pulse duration and thus the frequency also changes. The output oscillation at Pin 3 becomes a pulse stream which is varying in length--changing the amount of time the IR LED is on/off. The IR LED can really only be turned on/off--it can't be made to vary its intensity with changing amplitude. This is what allows you to transmit the signal. What's not clearly show on the schematic is the power and ground connection---but if you know electronics, you can see where they are connected on the 555 timer.

Why did you choose a photoelectric cell? Instead, I would expect a similar circuit using a phototransistor would have given MUCH higher sound quality. It would be a smaller size too.
