Thank you for all this valuable information! I have only been making pottery for a year and all my pieces are normally kiln fired in the studio where I have my classes. I have one piece which was fire in a metal refuse bin with paper sawdust grasses extra which I would love to be sealed. Now I can! I am also inspired to get my own bin so I can fire things at home. I just love the pit fired and raku amazing patterns you get! Thank you again and happy potterying!

Thank you for this very interesting lesson. I really enjoyed it. I am not a potter but bought a large raku pot online in Australia. It was made about thirty years ago by one of Australia's best known potters. It is darker than it appeared online and I would like to make it a little more colourful. It does have nice swirls of colour but it is very rough to the touch so it is very matt. I bought mink oil from China and it is very nice, as you say. I would like to know how many applications of mink oil I can put on my pot. I have done three now and each time it looks better. It dries quickly and is not sticky. Can I do more or is there a limit to mink oil applications? Thank you for your help.

Thanks :-) I don't know for sure - I only apply 1-2 layers, but I don't think there should be any problems adding more

Do you have a video for cleaning up the pitfired pots, and then applying sealant? If not, I would love to learn that.

Hello Mikkel how to stop copper matte raku from reoxidizing and end up with brown pot
@deMibPottery
@deMibPottery 4 ай бұрын
I don't know of any sealing that can fully prevent that. The best option is probably a spray layer of acrylic and keeping it out if the sun

Tusind tak for god information! Har du prøvet med bivoks? Mon ikke det også kunne fungere? Ellers må jeg igang med at teste :)
@deMibPottery
@deMibPottery Жыл бұрын
Tak. Bivoks kn også godt bruges, men det er som regel en smule mere hårdt, og mange varmer derfor det - eller krukken lidt op. Og så er det knap så blankt.

Hola Mikkel! Have you tried beeswax as a food safe sealant? I have applied it hot in also heated ware, and it works making ware waterproof. The only bad thing is it gives some wax/honey flavour to liquids inside, but can be acceptable being a natural, cheap and easy to find product.

I dont use it. I know many do. The Liquid Quartz works perfect for me on pitfired pots that need food safe sealung :-)

Hey Mikkel, I've made saggar to achieve a reduction atmosphere in an electric kiln for cone 8 to cone 10. Do you know how can I seal saggar to prevent vapors leaking and damaging the kiln? I saw long time ago, some poters sealiing the lid with clay, but I suspect clay will breake in high fire. Do you have any idea?
@deMibPottery
@deMibPottery 10 ай бұрын
Interesting - but no, I have never experimented with that. I don't want to damage my electric kiln :-)

Have you considered the food safe versions of Mod Podge? (I'm in the U.S. - so not sure about Denmark) I've been planning to experiment with it. It's also dishwasher safe. Just a thought. Thanks for all the suggestions. One other thought comes to mind, Sodium Silicate (water glass) which is also used in the food industry, as well as ceramics, and dozens of other industries...

I use Liquid Quartz for pots that needs food safe sealing. For the rest I found a local concrete sealant that seals better (100%) than any other product I tried. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3OWXmubnNOHh80
