560SL - R107 Neutral Safety Switch and Shift Linkage Bushings

In this video, I remove, test, and reinstall the Neutral Safety Switch and I also replace the shift linkage bushings. If this switch is not working correctly, your Mercedes will not start!

You make it look so easy . It has to be so much harder to change the switch when the trans. is in the car . Are there any videos out there to change it in the car? Mine is a 450sl . Thanks !!

It’s definitely harder under the vehicle with the exhaust & driveshaft there, but the procedure is the same. I’m glad I was able to do a detailed video with the transmission out.

It's pretty easy, just frustrating. Like Tony mentioned, the front one is easy because you can remove the bracket and swap the bushing on your workbench. The rear bushing is in a more tight space. I used a long bolt, some washers, and a large socket to create a small makeshift press to get that bushing in.

Nice clear video. At some stage I need to figure out the vacuum lines on my D Jetronic 280SL. Why is there a vacuum line to the transmission I wonder? Mike

Thanks Mike. That vacuum line goes to the the automatic transmission modulator valve. This valve is responsible for regulating the transmission fluid pressure based on engine vacuum signals. It helps ensure smooth shifting by adjusting the pressure within the transmission based on various driving conditions.

@@MikesMercsandothercars thanks Mike. The only reason I know this is because when I first bought my 560SL it was shifting rough so I investigated the different modules on the transmission. That’s when I found Sun Valley Mercedes Transmission I first tried adjusting and eventually I replaced this valve, but it didn’t solve the problem. www.mercedesdismantlers.com/722.3and722.416_transmission_adjustments.html
