This is the type of minimalism I appreciate. It's not completely getting rid of almost all of your stuff and only wearing black, grey or beige clothes, it's about being mindful of what & why you buy and appreciating what you have.

I have one journal that I take when I travel anywhere. I write in it at least every night, but sometimes throughout the day I will write something specific that I want to remember. Then I also get postcards and put them in my journal. When I fill up a journal, I start another one, so all of my trips are in order. I like to read them later on and remember things I've forgotten. Oops, forgot to say to pack a roll of tape to put the postcards in the journal.

I remember having the epiphany that the Sunday inserts informing me of sale items just caused me to go shopping to buy more. The irony was, usually it was more storage totes to put things in. My partner moved into my house, and it took months to get rid of things he moved here without thinking - broken utensils, 'non-perishable' food years past its best buy date. It was stuff he didn't even like, would never eat, but throwing it away was a 'waste.'

@itgetter93 жыл бұрын
Contentment is the best thing to which to aspire -- it brings you closer to loved ones and gives you true peace of mind.
@TheRealLaughingGravy3 жыл бұрын
Contentment is tricky. Americans are taught, almost since birth, to want more, to consume more, to always aspire to bigger and better things. People think there's something wrong with you if you're happy with what you have and content with where you are. A huge part of our national economy depends on our lack of contentment - it goes into freefall when people stop consuming. The simplicity of not wanting more is certainly alluring. But preaching contentment can also be a way to control and oppress others. It can be used to keep populations docile to make them more obedient. It can be a way to excuse and protect the ever-widening gap between the wealthy and the poor, between the rulers and the ruled, between those with more rights and those with fewer. Too many people think _other people_ ought to be content with what they have, but don't think that rule ought to apply to themselves as well. Contentment needs to be self-defined. You have to figure out for yourself how much you should be happy with, not follow what someone else tells you you should be happy with. I like this channel because she is always showing us what has worked for her family rather than telling us what should work for everyone. I hope people watch these videos with that in mind, that people shouldn't feel bad about themselves because, for example, they can't (or don't want to) stop buying new toys for their kids as suggested in this video.

He took us to visit families who live in tents (what they’ve done for centuries) with the bare minimum of possessions and a very old woman who kept her two goats in her house and slept on the floor. I just discovered you yesterday. I must say, this video is a breath of fresh air. I’ve been seeing so many people lately over stuffing their homes and brains, especially around the idea of food scarcity that it was a delight to find someone who buys what’s needed. I’ve been doing that for years now, and haven’t had to toss anything for a long time. My kids are all grown and gone, and recently have shared some memories of interactions with friends from way back when…of how they thought we were a poor family, as the kids didn’t dress in the most up to date fashion, or have the newest bikes and computer gear. We had chosen a life of laid back country living with no crushing debt and time to play. Those same friends, now, have commented on how being at our place were their best memories, their rambles in the hills and being creative with found items, sitting around a fire in the backyard for a full day of chatting. Thank you for this perspective…I dare say it could be revolutionary

I snapped this Christmas. I can’t do it anymore. And people say: “it’s all about the kids, you can’t quit Christmas.” That’s both true and false. It’s all about training a new generation to be slaves to consumerism. So in that sense, yeah. It’s all about the kids. And yes, I can quit Christmas as I’ve known it my whole life... buying all this crap we don’t need... buying filler crap worrying their Christmas won’t look like enough to them. I have two children. I asked them each what their favorite gift was from last year. And neither one of them could even remember a single thing they got last year. This is painful... you know? I swear I feel like the less we have, the happier we are. I’ve been through some trying times financially... and I swear my family was the happiest we had ever been when we had the least amount of money to spend.
@oldgeezer27804 жыл бұрын
I hate filler stuff. My partner insists, but I'm trying to do better. I know there's stuff he uses all year (lens cleaning wipes for his glasses, for instance) and I can 'fill' with things he actually uses, thus he can use his money for fun things, if he wants. "Yankee swap" stuff bothers me a little less - though I still try to make the gift useful, and I appreciate the exercise in having a fun get-together and exchange gifts of some type. And actually, last year's swap left me with something I use weekly. I left with three mini-flashlights. I've griped at work that it would be good to have a flashlight around, and back-of-house person just didn't agree. I've hauled mine out of my bag several times to find things. I remember a magazine article written by a woman frustrated by buying things her children didn't really care about 30 minutes after opening the presents. The following year, she took the kids with her. They each got to pick out one special present that would be wrapped up and they wouldn't be able to play with until Christmas. Suddenly, they were selective and savvy shoppers. One child looked at something he'd been pining for and actually said, "This isn't worth that much money."
@draculassweetheart4 жыл бұрын
I think that the less money you have to spend the more time you spend, and that’s what really makes good memories. So it’s OK to have money and not spend it, rather simply take the time to do things and have experiences with the people you love. This year I missed out on my cookie decorating party with my family and that was probably the biggest disappointment. when I am buying gifts, I try extremely hard to only gift either an experience, something consumable or some thing that the person actually needs. I used to do a lot of those filler gifts and they just wind up getting donated. But before they get donated they collect dust and then also have the potential to cause someone angst before they donate it because they don’t want you to feel bad because they’re getting rid of a gift you gave them! It’s ridiculous.
@amybee404 жыл бұрын
@@draculassweetheart My Mom is the queen of filler gifts. She gave me a "decorative" pillow this year with a motto about "loving a daughter just like you" on it. But it turned out to be fun, because when she asked me to read it out loud, I read all the notices on the plastic bag it came wrapped in -- "this bag is not a toy", Do not leave in crib, 100% polyester, etc -- until everyone in the room was laughing!

Needless to say, her bad habits are my bad habits--too much stuff, not enough space, need to save more money, she's a total slob. Most of the time things are that cheap it's because they're coming from a country where the people that are making these items are not being paid a fair wage, or might even be made by children, out of materials that are subpar and even potentially toxic. It's a sobering thought that helped me to form better spending habits.

The summary I took away from this video that I really need to adopt is to be content with what works "good enough" and stop seeking out something better. I'm notorious for always trying the newest laundry and cleaning products as if it's going to make laundry or cleaning go away 😂

Yes, that really spoke to me! Like, I got out of the habit as I have 2 toddlers right now and just no time for shopping...so sort of been forced into minimalism right now, lol. But I STILL have make up and things that I bought pre-kids...you know, a cream that gets rid of freckles or something...and the 4 others I got because I kept trying to find a "better" one...now I just accept that my skin is my skin and the best thing I can do is drink water and be healthy. Instead of trying to pretend some magic pill is going to fix my face. But yeah, years later and as I still go through and clean up "junk" to make room, it's amazing how much of it fits into that lesson - I bought it trying to fix a problem that I let media convince me I had, instead of just accepting things as "good enough".

I like the ideas here, but as an educator, I have to say that I would like to see books in a house, especially for kids. And the less time on an electric device, the better it is for sleep and eyesight. Our little ones even "made" their own books, writing their own stories, or drawing them, and binding them together with wool/thread and cardboard.
@Katred12u4 жыл бұрын
Yes. We were frugal when the kids were little but the one thing I never said no to was when they asked for a book, and we were always at the library as well, but their own books are important. Yep it's the pandemic, he did it anyway. Both got scholarships and paid the rest for themselves. I will always believe that the books we read, together and their selves, the books they owned and had in their rooms instead of video games, computers or TV paved the way.

All things completely needed for new activities taken up, and thrift stores are not around where we are...so while they were not frivolous purchases, I still almost cried at all the full price purchasing 🙄 You can take the girl out of the thrift shop, but you can't take the thrift shop out of the girl 😉

@sophieisabelle37624 жыл бұрын
Same! I have five cats and people thought I was daft for getting white linens, but it’s actually way easier to keep clean. I put a blanket on the end of the bed where the cats sleep, and it does double duty keeping the linens clean and adding some colour. Towels are grey but that’s because I chose them years ago and they’re still in good condition. We have two sets of linens for our bed, two sets of towels, and one set of guest linens and towels. We do have a dryer though, which isn’t as common in the UK as in some other places, so that helps keep on top of laundry.

Yes! Research has shown that we only have a certain amount of decision-making power each day before "decision fatigue sets in" and we start making choices that are not aligned with our goals. (that's why Mark Zukerberg wears the same uniform of dark tee shirt and jeans every day)--so minimizing your clothes, your menus, your make up, your cleaning products, etc. decreases the number of decisions you have to make in a day and sets you up to be better able to live in accordance with your goals/values. Also, did you know that the beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that runs on making us feel "less than" and chipping away at our self esteem? They "promise" utter nonsense like if you buy this product, you won't have wrinkles!--Rubish! That business is not about serving us, it's about making us feel bad about our looks so they can make money. (Read "The Beauty Myth" by Naomi Wolf). So resisting the allure of the beauty industry and buying way less is a great way to LOVE yourself, decrease the inventory you're managing (which saves you time and money), AND decreases the waste this awful industry generates, which is SO hard on the earth. As to scents in the house, I'm with you--air fresheners are bad news. But a pan of water on the stove with a lavender branch from my garden simmering is a lovely scent in the spring and summer, and for the cold months, I simmer apple slices and a cinnamon stick--Ah! Thanks for all the great tips!

A great alternative to ornaments and Knick knacks is plants - fake plants need less work - good ones can be pricey but then they look much better forever

I'm 23 and have 3 kids I can't tell you how many car loads of clothes and toys we've gotten out so far. All this started because I struggle to keep my home clean and organized. And i am still finding lots of things to donate! Thank you!

How's the situation for you now? Do you find that you have more balance? I've been overwhelmed with our inventory and decided I needed to get rid of a ton of our stuff. Sometimes I wonder if it's attainable though, without going full blown minimalist.

Funny how I’ve been doing a lot of this for years and you don’t even realize it. If you don’t have it you don’t miss it!

I’m so glad you aren’t trying to sell us a book on minimalism, that always seems the ultimate irony!

Marketers are selling a solution to a problem. Minimalism is realizing the problem is as manufactured as the product--or that the solution lies within.

@Cathy Rowe I have several heirlooms, collectables and antiques. I'm not sure what you mean. Seems like if no one got rid of anything, collectors, like yourself, couldn't collect them.

You are the least pretentious minimalist, I’ve ever watched on KZbin. I appreciate that. Just a normal mama. ❤️

Me too! Absolutely! I’ve donated to our thrift store a couple times this month, and all I can think is “this stuff used to be money”,

I'm working on getting rid of excess. I keep asking myself "Do you or family & friends need this?" I'm known to pick up an item, place it in the cart, and before leaving the store taking the item back to were i found it. Leave the store and give myself time to think about it. More and more people are trying to minimalize their homes. At least those who I know.

I spent two years cleaning the junk out of my basement. It is very hard emotionally to part with a lot of the stuff, but I realized I have not used most of it in 20 years and never will use it again. I still have to go through and do another "fine tune" of the junk, and I am hoping to get rid of more stuff.
@ajalicea10914 жыл бұрын
@@alisonsmith8653 That is what I have been told. Start with one area, and go room from room. And then like you said start all over again and fine-tune each area.

"Best if used by" is not an expiration date. Most expiration dates are ridiculously conservative due to liability. Canned goods, grains, etc., often depend on how you store them. Our extra food helped others in our neighborhood during the lockdown. Passing it on is always a good idea.

I love the way you presented the information in this video. I wondered how you were going to list 57 things in 18 minutes, but it all flowed so nicely! Better than saying "#1 is..." and "#2 is..."
@stellerkags2 жыл бұрын
Wow! Thanks for truly making this a list video! We do all of these and are almost out of debt (we will buy and pay off a vehicle and a baby this year, our only debt). Three things that have helped: grocery pickup, not buying one time use things like paper plates and cups, and realizing shopping is not a past time, but finding other things to do as a family (like using the stuff we already have ie biking, playing games, going camping, having people over for meals and using the nice dishes we save for “special occasions”. Just use the China now!)

I stopped buying my kids birthday gifts 5 years ago. Instead we have a birthday “experience”. The kids love their experiences and look forward to them every year. They get to choose what they want to do as their experience. We decided to do this because we were accumulating to much stuff that was barely played with. We decided the lasting memories of those experiences would be what matters to them as adults. Toys are fleeting and forgotten but time spent together as a family is invaluable. Some experiences we’ve had include a ninja a day at the zoo, a warrior course, skiing, a trip to Disneyland ... just to name a few.

I have always taken a lot of photos over the past 20 years of my kids growing up, places we've went, my garden, our pets ect. Like everything in life, those moments are short lived, and people and pets and places leave us. I know that some day, the photos I take now, may end up being all I have. As I get older, I am unable to keep up with the large garden I love, and I am so glad I took those extra few moments to take pictures of the things I've nurtured. I will always have that.
