Dawn, you have been so helpful as I’ve worked hard to transform my home into a more simplified environment. I was really proud of myself because tonight I was able to put up all the fall decorations in my whole house in 15 minutes, and they fit in one storage tub! I have found now that if I go into Target, I look around and all I see is a bunch of stuff that has little meaning and is unappealing. I am so much more thoughtful with what I bring into my home. My biggest challenge is still my child’s artwork and toys, but I know that that will be a challenge for some time. Thank you for all that you do to help transform lives!

Since textiles take so long to degrade, please consider turning in those items to recycling centers that take textiles. Also, there are companies that will accept any type of textile (including underwear) if they are sent to them via a special bag. Totally worth it.

If it's something I wouldn't want to pay money for, even in a thrift store, I throw it in the trash. If you don't like it, chances are no one else does either.

I have a very full one bedroom apartment. I use all of the stuff. It's organized. It's amazing. I can go across the street and play ball. Or my friends and I can do disc golf or a large picnic or birthday party.

I thrift, collect, resell, resuce, reuse-and am a recovering consumer. Comsumption has a lot to do with self esteem, the socioeconomic circumstances you grew up in, those whom you surround yourself, brain chemistry, and loathing and loving yourself. I purrsonally enjoyed the rush, no CRAVED it, like an addict. I have many other compulsions as well. Therapy, self reflection and discovery, journaling, medication and time have all worked wonders. I love everything, all styles and genres and types of everything such as clothes, accessories, home decor, creating, crafting and more. Im a beautiful disaster. Marketing, social media, packaging, store set up, and accessibilty are powerful dealers and suppliers. I also truly enjoy shopping, buying, and presenting as part of my love language. I am good at it. I have moved multiple times, downsized, and cleaned out the houses and closets of many relatives. I also am a big donater and and have even worked at goodwill. I try to give to places who are truly charitable rather than to goodwill. I would rather donate to a church organization or salvation army, but those resources just aren't there for everyone. A few thoughts: 1. Throwing away is easiest, and is sometimes best, all things considered. It's swift, decisive , and ok. We just don't consider it, but it will free you up to accomplish more and ce eate momentum. 2. You have to be physically and mentally healthy, have the help, the budget, and the resources such as a truck or trailer to accomplish your clean out goals. Not everyone has. You also need time and availability. 3. Those who donate infrquently don't know what they should know. Some think they are "helping". The landscape has changed. Comsumption and giving are very complex social and purrsonal issues rooted in morality, social norms and mores, history and development, and global influences. 4. Some people don't care. It costs $ to dispose of stuff, so why not use donation centers as dumps? 5. Goodwill tries to be environmentally and socially conscious. Unwearable clothing is still recycled. Shoes, reading glasses, books,,electronics, and other items are farmed out to other organizations. A lot of what gets thrown away at goodwill is illegally dumped, after hours "donations.." Some items have health hazards to employees who have to handle it. Proective gear is required but it is dangerous work. Donating a box you didnt open from grandmas's attic, or worse, an outside storage unit, is reckless. Mold, animal carcasses, animal droppings, broken glass, chemicals, and just plain nastiness cause, at best, extra work for everyone, and at worst, creates a dangerous situation. It all prevents good goods from reaching the floor to help those who need it, and ultimately drives up consumer costs. 6. Employees do not "get the good stuff." Goodwill does not allow it's employees to buy from their home store or " tip off" friends and relatives. It is a fire-able offense. 6. Resellers aren't why prices are high. Resellers have balls, and work very hard. The overhead for resellers involves a lot, and most just want to match item to those seeking it. Passion all around. We are just jealous that we didnt do it first. 7. Please don't use "hoarding" or "hoarder" to describe yourself or others. It's like "crazy." It is meaningless speech that doesn't qualify or qualify a person or situation. It does a disservice to those who are pathologically afflicted. I hope this helps.

GOODWILL IS a profit center. Owner is a millionaire, does not go to charity. I agree, instead of throwing away with a blemish, DONATE TO A HOMELESS SHELTER.

The steamer review killed me xD. You're not supposed to "spray" the steam, it's not gonna be any different than water that way. You need to really push the nozzle into the nooks and crannies and blast the steam onto the dirt from up close. It's meant to use in a detailed sort of way, you're practically boiling the dirt off.

I've never understood having clothes in closets with tags on them still.. that being said, as someone who thrifts, I wish that people would take tags off of clothing before donating because those items are priced higher than it normally would be..

Great video! Here's a note from food pantries on "expired" shelf stable food. 1. Do not donate it without asking. 2. Canned food can be safely consumed for 1 year after the expiration date, but know it's nutritional quality is declining. 3. If it shows no sign of botulism (bloated cans), it can be consumed for calories but will lack nutrients. 4. FDA regulations required "best by" dates even on dried grains which are nutritionally shelf stable for years, so pop that popcorn and cook that rice before buying more. Hope this helps someone.

Not a supporter of goodwill, donate to anyone else. BESIDES, if you put the items in a separate bag, labeled TEXTILE, (clean & washed) it's supposed to be used for recycling

**Dawn- your tip to use the special things we’re afraid to use because they’re so special has been wonderful for me. Because of this tip you gave in the past- I’ve been using my grandmother’s spatula when I cook all the time for the last two years. It’s very old and the only thing I have from her- but every time I use it I’m reminded of her and all the wonderful cooking she did. I know it will one day break from the use- but I know longer feel sad when I see it- it brings me joy because I am using it as she once did. By using these special things- it’s like bringing those who have passed, back into our lives. TY.

Great job! In the oven, (I do not have a coil in the bottom) I keep a large baking sheet in the bottom to catch messes. Once a month I clean it and wipe down the oven with a damp cloth. It stays really clean and only takes a few minutes. I learned that trick from making a really big mess baking a cheese dish that overflowed and burnt on the bottom of my oven. Yuck!

I have been a minimalist for about 9 yrs as well. I have such a hard time getting my 6 and 9 yr old on board. They want to save every little trinket, party favor etc. They have gotten a little better with declutering toys but there is still way too much in their rooms because of outside stuff coming in from school, friends, etc.

Would it work to give each one a bin to save their collectibles, maybe these things remind them of something meaningful to only them, then after they've owned them for awhile they could go through and "donate" the items. Kids usually don't mind sharing in lieu of throwing stuff out. It can feel like a loss to sensitive children. Just a thought

Thank you for the Goodwill comments! I have the same gratitude extended by my local charity shop! My reply is always, “You’re welcome. I hope that my items help and/or bring joy to someone. Just because many people can only afford to shop in second hand stores doesn’t mean they don’t deserve something decent!” Thank you, also, for sharing your delightful moments with your lovely children❣️
