#57 Woodturning Project - Large Inside Out Sphere Tealight Holder

This week, my woodturning project is possibly my most adventurous and advanced yet - An inside out (involuted woodturning) sphere tealight holder made from sycamore which was coloured and gold gilted on the inside. This all sits in a base.

This is very cool. I wonder though if you could have turned the hole for the candle whilst it was ‘inside out’? I ask this because if so, once it’s together the correct way you could have made a small hole under the candle for a magnet to sit in. Then, place another magnet in the base but with the same pole pointing towards the other magnet so that when you put the two pieces together the upper piece has just enough separation and ‘float’ to be able to spin. That would be awesome!

Awesome project, and I really appreciate seeing that someone of your talent still has to adapt on the fly to the "surprises" that we cause ourselves during woodturning. First time I saw this video I was just starting out turning and was just getting used to a roughing gouge. I couldn't get my head around what you had done and thought there were lots of "out takes". I'm amazed that the stain you applied to colour the outside didn't end up staining the inside of it. Some wind force must have something to do with that. Also, have you ever had a problem with painting or staining on your chuck of your lathe? It seems like it would happen often with the spray technique of coloring pieces. All the best, Jon

Cool project. I agree: lacquer finish would be a good way to go. On the insulated mugs I have made, I have applied upwards of 10 thin coats from a rattle can and had good results--just took a few weeks for the lacquer smell to go away completely.

Very Nice Project. When I was watching the video and you mentioned your mistake I was wondering what it might be, and then you started to cut the recess for the tenon and the light above my head went on. Yeah, it was a mistake but you recovered very well. Good Job and thanks for posting the video.

Excellent as usual. With working in quarters and reversing them had you thought about creating a digital model first. I'm sure you could do something like that in sketchup which would then allow you to duplicate the quarters and reverse them. That may have saved the mistake early on and you could also have produced the templates. Wasn't sure about the colouring as you did it, but that final image of the finished item at the end of the video really does look superb, just like several of your other colouring projects. For the final buffing, rather than using something so severe at the drill and better than the duster, why not use the dremmel. You can get small fabric buffers and that would allow you to get to the places that no drill will ever get to. Paul

Wow, that took some tool control and an extremely sharp gouge! Astonishingly thin, I was waiting for it to fly apart any minute! I could not visualise what you meant when we spoke on the phone but once I saw it, it became obvious what you had meant :) I can just imagine your face, hahaha! You totally overcame it though and the end result is lovely! I have looked at both the KZbin and downloaded videos now and there is some great additional information in the downloaded version, especially the thoughts on end-grain orientation.

Love the closed form inside out turning shape, it seems you've taken a shine to it, ever since your inside out petals Christmas ornament of last year :) That is a beautiful piece, I would like to try it out, I'll just need to find the right wood, the only place I know I can find seasoned wood in planks form I can cut to shape is like 2 hours drive away, so I need to work the whole day around it... Your mistake didn't dawn on me till you started laughing, it took me longer to see it then you, in video time sense :) Thank you for Sharing Martin!!

really nice looking piece...the rescue worked and turned out very well -- you got the side walls super thin, probably thinner than i would have dared!! I tried one glued up turned piece, though instead of hot glue, i used wood glue and included a layer of brown paper in the glue joint, which lets you separate it when you're ready to turn it inside out.... I had been told the hot glue just wouldn't hold as well.. seemed to work just fine for you however so now i'm wondering if the difference is all that significant....

Thanks for watching. It is a little nervy watching the lathe bed through the piece! Lol. I have seen people using strobe lights to 'freeze' the motion to make it a bit easier. It might be worth looking into.

I am setting up my workshop but aki in Brazil is very expensive and does not have the varieties of machines that have there, I do not think a good lathe here I bought one through the internet but it is much inferior, I had a company from there that mattered to Brazil but they stopped If you know of any very warm hug Martin, Elton.

The only people that would know it's made from wood is the ones you tell... That would be the only reason to make it in such a way in the first place... I mean if not you could have made it out of plastic for that matter.
