Your effort was tireless. How you never gave up will teach the young and old that you need to do your best and don’t give up. As an electronics engineer, we are stuck trying to fix the impossible, I never give up and after 29.5 years I retired. The rule of the impossible fix is if you do the same thing with the same results and it still doesn’t work, go different stop going in a circle go elipitical it might work

I found this series while looking for inspiration for my own refinishing project. I inherited my Grandfather's 1955 (FON) J45 and the finish looks like a broken window. It was with him since it was new and traveled around the world with him while he was a missionary for 35-ish years. Hopefully I can rejuvenate the finish and keep it alive for years to come, and possibly pass it onto my own grandkids.

For divits in timber you can lay a damp cloth over the divit and use the hot soldering iron to steam out the exact area. The steam swells the timber and it should pop it out.

Great job Jerry. I know I'm late commenting - came to it for another look. People just don't realise how difficult it is to get a good finish - whether that's a repair or on a new project. Kit guitars can leave the DIYers quite a job, and more expense than you'd think for materials alone. All the best.

Jerry you did a fantastic job on that Gibson

You should look for fish eye eliminator for a lacquer.... I painted classic cars yours and years ago we were both old-timer s. I don't use lacquer on cars anymore I'm not even sure if you can find the product... But if you can.. adding fisheye eliminator will solve your crater problem.... Don't put it in your supply batch... Only use it in the product You're going to paint with immediately after adding it.... You'll be amazed how well it works.. Also notice you finished with shellac... Enough to meet you and see your shot and share notes.. I've been a machinist for 40 years and I have at least two decades and car and airplane restoration I love meeting skilled seasoned people like yourself to share knowledge . No little about musical instruments but have a deep love for music and I do know some very accomplished well-known musicians that I admire. I cover all of North America in my job doing service and CNC machines currently So I'd love to communicate and if I'm in your area I'd love to meet you and see her shop I agree in the sanding there's nothing more valuable than your years of figuring out what works I can probably show you a few techniques for my car restoration years that will produce a flatter more perfect finish if that's something you're looking for. I also think I know why you're getting the balling with 600 sandpaper It has to do with the hardness of the finish That may or may not be something you can overcome it would be one of the things if we ever meet we could chat about

what a beautiful job that your trainee boogered up that you turned into a absolute beauty..i learn so much from watching you work on guitars and fixing the broken ones and making them look like they were nev er damaged.. you are truly a master luthier..Caleb is a very nice fellow but his skills were a bit questionable and thats normal for someone in training.. but he was learning and you rescued what he left you with. actually i thought the guitar was a major wreck but wow you made it look like a $10,000 guitar..you are a magnificent luthier Jerry..Another success story and i love the bluegrass music you play as well..

I wish everyone wrapped their strings like this. I would only add that I put in more slack as the string gets thinner, so as to wrap down the post and increase the angle on the string to the nut to as much as I can, but not too much. Gives you the best sound if you have clean nut channels. Brilliant

Jerry, my friend, I feel your pain! As a Gunsmith I use nitrocellulose as little as possible.. and I use gallons of shellac - which I use various grades of wire wool, finishing at 00000 grade.. yes, five ought…. Which is on par with 1000 grit.. It’s about 7 months since you did this work, but I’m with you all the way! The struggle with finishing is the same with gunstocks! The restoration work you’ve done will never be fully recompensed.. I’m so tempted to do a tribute guitar job.. as I do have a guitar that has a wracked neck from someone’s really bad neck job.. it only cost me £20 on eBay.. love what you do, as I know what it’s like trying to create perfection for a customer on a budget.. the budget jobs always seem to bite you on the butt.. 😂

Hello, I'm from Austria and I'm trying to repair a 50-year-old guitar that my wife got for her 6th birthday, unfortunately the top is broken in the middle of the sound hole (new strings and stood in the sun in my nephew's kitchen) Binding is missing and the rest of the body has also come off the floor a bit, and the veneer is to be pieced in on the floor! So a MEGA task! Watch your videos for help and tips! LG from Innsbruck Roland Ps: Master workshop for guitar making Neumarkt-St.Veit Helmut Buchsteiner Model II No. 641 1972
