This painting is done on 11x14 inch yupo using Ranger ink colors Cool Peri and Aqua along with some Piñata Brass for the metallic. I used 99% isopropyl alcohol and my Revlon styling brush hairdryer with the brush attachment removed. There are Amazon affiliate links below to the supplies that I use most often, including the hairdryer. For those of you outside of the US who can’t get this dryer, you can use the link to see the exact specifications of it so that you can find a similar one in your home country. Inhaling this is very dangerous, you are right. Thank you for pointing that out. I've tested the air while painting using isopropyl alcohol and alcohol inks, and my air tested was showing the highest level of harmful fumes. A regular mask doesn't help. You need a special respirator that protects from smaller VACs particles. Stay safe!
@LorrieBrewer

💜 You are absolutely right about using the correct type of filters in your respirator. I should have mentioned that in the video. I use P100 filters in mine since they are rated for VOCs/vapors. I’ll be sure to mention that in another video soon so people who have never used one will know what they need to get once they can get them again. Thank you for that comment! 😃💜

Thank you! Once I have the ink on my yupo, or whatever I am painting on, I use the isopropyl alcohol to dilute and spread the ink. I usually put down a drop of ink, then a drop of Piñata brass, then I use a small squirt of alcohol around and on that and start moving it all, either with my hairdryer or by blowing on it. Occasionally I will just put down the ink and dry it, then use the alcohol to reactivate it in small sections to work. Lol I hope that’s what you were asking. If not, just let me know and I’ll try again 😃💜💜

Wow, this is gorgeous! You make me want to go downstairs and pull out my Yupo paper and alcohol inks and start playing. So far all I've done is some backgrounds for cards but now I want to try something bigger. I have seen people use different methods for blowing the ink around and you said you have the hand pump from Tim Holtz. I didn't buy it because I have arthritis in my hands and am afraid using that would cause too much pain. Other than blowing with a straw or using the blow dryer, I was thinking of getting a foot pump like the ones used to blow up balloons and see how well that would work and save my hands from the pain. Just wondered if you had ever tried using something like that. Thanks for the video.
@LorrieBrewer
@LorrieBrewer 4 жыл бұрын
😊 Thank you so much! One of the best compliments I can get is that my videos inspire people to try it for themselves! If you have done card backgrounds, then you are already familiar with the way the inks move, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble doing it on a larger scale. You may have a little learning curve with moving larger amounts and keeping them under control, but I bet you can pick it up quickly. I’m always happy to answer questions if you have problems you can’t figure out how to solve! 💜💜

Lorrie i am totally new to this and am trying to watch as much as possible. i subscribed to you because you are very easy to understand. I know this comments is a long way from May but can you tell about the shades of pink that developed. It seemed that they appeared when you put the brass on, is this the case. I want to give this a go and you said about using the back side of photo paper? I have loads of this from when i had a printer so hopefully can use it to practice on. As i'm starting out what colours would you suggest i start off purchasing. I can't afford to purchase a whole load of colours at once so thought if i could start with three colours that would include the brass i could probably do that. Thank you so much for your time and knowledge. Take care and stay well. Shirley. X

I'm sorry I'm just now getting to this! If it's not too late already, based on your other comment about colors you are using in your house, I would recommend starting out with Ranger colors Stream, Wild Plum, and a purple color like Boysenberry or maybe Purple Twilight. I think those are actually the colors I used on the light switch cover I did. And definitely get the Jacquard Pinata brass for a metallic color. The pink you see on this painting is because I used yupo paper to paint on. Several of the Ranger inks will separate into a couple of their basic parts. The color I was using was Periwinkle, a light purplish color, so the bluish part stained the yupo and didn't move much while the pinkish part separated out and kept moving. It's hard to explain lol. I have only had this happen on yupo for some reason. The Grafix and the NARA papers that I also use never do this. I love the look when this happens, but it's much harder to make a painting look good for me. Just a reminder to use the backside of your photo paper, not the glossy front that would normally be printed on. The inks won't move on the front side. I have heard that some brands don't work good even on the back, but I don't know which ones don't so you'll just have to give yours a try. Again, I am really sorry for not getting you answers a little bit quicker! 💜💜

Alli 💜 Thank you! One of the colors I used in this is one of the lights (the cool peri). I have a few others and really like them, but they are so light that you have to use way more ink than usual to see the colors good. You can get lighter colors by diluting your ink, but I don’t know that you could get the exact same shades as the lights are. That most recent box that you posted is gorgeous! Don't know if you've ever tried it yet or not: "Brea Reese Waterproof Alcohol Ink Paper". Not good stuff. I used a cotton swab to wipe up a little excess alcohol and the coating on the paper came right off, leaving a bright white, jagged, matt-finish spot! Needless to say, the painting was ruined, so I decided to practice on the same piece. The same thing happened over and over again no matter how softly I tried, the coating came off. Thought you'd want to know. Thanks for all you do for us!

@LorrieBrewer
@LorrieBrewer 3 жыл бұрын
I do not use blending solution at all unless I have no other choice. I don't like the way it moves and the thickness that the glycerin in it gives to the ink. I only use 99% isopropyl alcohol when painting. It's much cheaper and for me it works much better. You can use either one, the alcohol is just my personal preference. 😊💜

Thank you! No, this is synthetic art paper made from polypropylene. To do the style of painting that I do, you have to use a non-porous surface so the inks can move around and not soak into the paper. NARA, Grafix Dura-Bright, Yupo by Legion, and Grafix opaque white craft plastic are some of my favorites to use. 💜💜

Sara Ulyatt 😃 Thank you for watching and commenting! Ranger eggplant is a great one for that separation effect. Actually, many of the Ranger colors will do this. A few of the other Ranger colors that separate are pitch black, currant, pink sherbet, denim, cool peri (what I used in this painting), and slate. There are others, but those are the ones I can think of right off hand that you get some of the biggest effect off of. Just remember they won’t do this nearly as much, and sometimes not at all, unless you use yupo to paint on. The staining on the yupo is what pulls some color out of the ink, making it change. Try making color swatches on yupo so you can tell what type of effect you’ll get with the different colors. Hope this helps some! 💜💜

Love love your work. I have a question. Have ordered the precision tip applicator bottles but find my piñata brass keeps getting stuck in the needle. Do you dilute metallics with alcohol too before you put it in the bottle?

Thank you very much! No, I don’t dilute my brass any in the bottle. I am not sure why yours is getting stopped up. I have never had that happen to mine. When I am using mine and leaving the tip cover off for a while, I am still always shaking the bottle with my finger over the opening every time I’m getting ready to put a drop down. Maybe the constant shaking is keeping it from drying in the applicator. I’m sorry, I wish I had an answer for you! 💜💜

Lorrie, Beautiful as always! I have a question... I bought glossy photo paper and my ink bleeds through to the back. Is there a “ special” type of photo paper I should use?I also bought matte and that didn’t work. Thanks, Megan

Megan Walsh I have purchased the Kirkland and it works great. Make sure you aren’t using the glossy side. I have also purchased staples brand too. No problem with bleeding. I love Lorrie’s stuff!

😊 Thank you for the compliment! As France Phillips said, the Kirkland, Staples, and Office Depot brand all work. I get the glossy inkjet paper and use the back side (non-glossy). Don’t get one of the name brands like Kodak though. They have watermarks on the back. I hope that helps some! 💜💜

Olivia Short 😃 Thank you for the info! I think Katherine Babcock has a video on her channel using one and I’m pretty sure she has a link there. I don’t think you can post links or pics in the comments. I really appreciate the thought, though! I had actually forgotten about those until I read your post. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! 💜💜

Lorrie Brewer I got it after watching her, I just couldn’t remember her name :). I bought you hair styler after watching you as well. In the UK we can’t get piñata until this virus is sorted as it’s band item as far as amazon and Etsy are concerned. I really want to try the brass. I love your work

I’m loving this but are you using alcohol? I don’t see you using it with your first color. I’m confused.

Ruth West 😊 Sorry, I forgot to mention that on this video. The colors were so pastel that I didn’t add alcohol as I put them down most of the time. I didn’t want to wash out the color too much initially and not really have any left to spread out, so I just used more ink than I usually would and no alcohol in the beginning. Sorry about forgetting that in the voiceover! 💜💜

Thank you so much. My dryer like yours isn’t coming until tomorrow so I did my first one with a straw. My other dryers are too clunky.

Ruth West My dryer is so much easier to hold than a regular one. Don’t forget that the cool setting is not actually cool, more like slightly warm, but I love the way it works. I hope you do, too! 💜💜

I'm new to using alcohol inks, what is the tool you're using to blow the ink around? I find my hair dryer to be awkward! Thank you :)

It is actually a hairdryer as well. It is a Revlon brand styling brush hairdryer with the brush attachment removed. It is so much easier to hold than a standard dryer. There is a link to the one I use in the description box below the video. Just click on the video title and it should open up for you. If you get a different brand, try to get one with as low of wattage as you can find and preferably with a cool setting. Mine is 500 watts and it still blows a little strong. Sorry I didn’t get back to you quicker. We’ve been on vacation. 💜💜

Got alcohol on Amazon$$$. But was going to ask, being I have a lot of old photo paper, how do you like it, I’m new.
@LorrieBrewer

😃 The back side (non-glossy side) of glossy inkjet photo paper can be great to use, especially for practicing when you are new because it’s so much cheaper. There are some brands that don’t work as good as others, so you’ll just have to try yours to see how it does. I have used Kirkland and Office Depot brands and liked both of them. I have heard Staples brand works good, as well. Give it a try on yours! 💜💜

Have you diluted your ink in the bottle of isopropyl? It looks so thin when you pour it on the paper.
@LorrieBrewer
@LorrieBrewer 4 жыл бұрын
😃 I don’t dilute my inks before putting them on the paper. One of the needle nosed bottle has straight 99% isopropyl alcohol and the other has undiluted Piñata brass in it. I just put it in a smaller bottle because I buy it in 4 oz. bottles that don’t have an applicator tip on them. 💜💜

I’ll be sure to let people know in a future video how it works for me and if it is something people with arthritis or other hand issues might be able to use or not. My granddaughters will have a good time playing with it if I can’t use it lol. 💜💜
