Abstract alcohol ink tutorial using Ranger colors Teakwood and Stream, and Pinata metallic Brass. I used 91% isopropyl alcohol and 9 inch x 12 inch Grafix opaque white craft plastic. I also use a Revlon brush style hair dryer (on the cool setting) with the brush attachment removed to move the ink.

It's comforting when you say that you used to feel like you were chucking it because you can't get it. I'd be very very happy to get what you think are not done or look bad to you and I'd be THRILLED to have it like that LOL

Shannon J 💜 It’s too bad that it is such difficult advice for all of us to follow, myself included! Lol I still fall into that trap of wishing mine would turn out like “theirs” instead of loving it for what it is and being happy about its originality. Thank you for the compliment! 💜💜

@@LorrieBrewer I understand what your saying, I've been there with Watercolor painting. No one finds mistakes on our art but us (as in the artist). This is Breathtaking Beautiful and your not even done yet. When do you put the Stream ink in?

You are so right. I thought the same way about not ever being good enough, and not wanting anyone to see my stuff. Then, unbeknownst to me, my husband put some of my paintings up for sale on eBay, and something that I didn’t even like, sold! I couldn’t believe it. Somebody actually liked my stuff enough to pay for it! So, now I just do for me to let that creative whatever out, and who cares if anyone else likes it! I love your painting. I’m new to alcohol inks, so when I saw your tutorial, I had to watch, but your encouragement is just fantastic! Thank you so much! ( P.S. - I’m not a flower girl either.)

😊 Thank you so much! This comment means a lot to me because I have been told that I should stop pointing out and apologizing for my mistakes. My personal feeling is that every single artist throughout history made mistakes and had screw ups throughout their careers lol. We just only see the perfection in what most create because they don’t want to share the “not so perfect”. For me, personally, that just makes me feel like a failure and that I’ll never be good like that. It makes mistakes seem so much worse and more frustrating to me. I don’t ever want people to see me or my work as perfect. Lol Neither one are! I think sharing some of my own struggles helps keep all of you from feeling like giving up if you can’t get it the way you want it fast enough. I am so touched that you took the time to mention how much you appreciate the way I do my videos! Lol I just try to be me, whether good or bad that day 😃💜

Thank you so much for your response ! Exactly ! That’s how I feel about that too. Whenever I watch videos or tutorials about that, I feel like I‘m doing everything wrong, since I do exactly what those people do, but my paintings don’t come out the way theirs do. At some point it get‘s really frustrating. If you wouldn’t have pointed out those mistakes, I would’ve probably thought, that this was your goal and that your painting came out the way you wanted it to, because to be honest; in my opinion it’s perfect. Also when you say things like “sometimes it doesn’t come out the way you want it and the paint does what it wants“ or “don’t give up if it doesn’t work out the first time“ it really means a lot to me, because sometimes I‘m really about to give up on that, but your words and your beautiful paintings give me the strength to keep continuing ❤️

I love this video and have learned a lot from it. I'm new to alcohol inks and can see a lot of where I've been going wrong - which doesn't mean from here on I'll be going right! It's a beautiful art but, I think, one of the hardest to learn to control. One of my other hobbies, which I'm not good at but enjoy splashing around at, is watercolour painting and a huge problem I had was watching speeded up demos - my brain insisted I should be painting at that speed; I'm sure you can imagine the result! - so I'm always pleased to find really good demos like this, at 1:1 speed and with great explanations. Thank you Lorrie.

Thank you for the lovely comment! I am glad you enjoyed the video. I totally agree about how watching sped up videos makes you feel you should be doing it much faster. That’s one reason I try to keep most of mine at regular speed unless they just get way too long. I’ll be back to posting some new videos very soon!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I have been following the acrylic pouring artists and was going to try that and then about three days ago one of the ladies i watch called Saskia Smit was doing some Alcohol Panting and doing a flower. I was completely fascinated and wanted to find out as much as possible. I have watched many Alcohol art for beginners and have been left frustrated and right before seeing your ended up watching a man whose video was 35+ minutes long. He used a 'puffer' to move the ink about and i thought it looked awful and he kept wiping it off and then repeating the same thing again! After 20 minutes i had a headache and decided to look at something else and thank god i did. I have learned more from you on watching this video than i have in the last three days with anybody else. I am IN LOVE with this piece. It is more like i would love to do. Part of my reason for wanting to do something like this is that i am a disabled Nurse and am now stuck mostly indoors but i love to create. I also want to get new furniture in a Blush Pink velvet and my main wall id antique gold wallpaper, stunning. I want to do a large piece for that wall. I have now subscribed to you and will be watching as much of you as i can. I live in the UK so we are back into lockdown so i will have to source things via Amazon. Can you tell me what type of paper you are using please and can you get large pieces. Of course i will do lots of practice but that is my end goal. I can't wait now to see more of your creations. No doubt i will be in touch via your email after i watch some more. Thank you so much for your expertise and time. From a much appreciative lady in the UK. Stay well and stay safe. Shirley. X

😊 I am so glad you are finding my videos helpful to you! You are right about it taking a lot of practice. I am glad you realize that from the start because too many people go into this thinking they will be turning out masterpieces within their first few tries. For paper I use Grafix opaque white craft plastic, yupo by Legion, or NARA synthetic art paper. You can usually find all of these on Amazon in a few sizes. Yupo can be ordered in large rolls to cut off your own sizes, but I have never ordered it like that personally, so I don’t know how difficult it is to get the yupo to flatten out before you can paint on it. I don’t know if you can order from this place in the UK, but I get yupo and Grafix in large sheets from www.jerrysartarama.com/. It might be worth checking to see if you can get items from there delivered in the UK. Good luck as you start out with this! I hope you end up loving it as much as I do. Just don’t get too frustrated in the beginning as you are learning to control the inks. Above all remember to have fun with it! 💜💜

This is by far my favourite. I have been struggling, trying to get something that even remotely resembles this. Nope, not happening, not so far at least. I am one of the whispy flower people. When I started, I used canned air. That stuff is very expensive. I quickly got a little tiny airbrush and use that for all of my flowers. But........tomorrow I will make you a flower with my hair dryer, same one that you have. I'm tempted to start now but my art room is beside our bedroom and hubby works in the morning. Stay tuned. Oh yes, I wanted to say that I agree with you about Janette Vivo's work. She taught me how to make my flowers pop with her beautiful centres.
@LorrieBrewer
@LorrieBrewer 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Jeanette Vivo’s flowers are some of the best and prettiest that I have seen. Maybe one of these days I’ll give them a try. I hate to hear that you are struggling so much with the wispy. Sometimes it is good to step away and try something else to help build some confidence in your abilities back up. You can always come back to wispy later. I hope you don’t give up on it though! If you ever want to send me a short video of how you are painting the wispy ones I will be glad to see if I can spot something that might help you out a little. I hope I don’t lose you on here! You’ve been with me since near the beginning 😃. Thank you for hanging in there with me for so long! 💜

I'm just starting out...still not able to find the right alcohol...but I've gone through teaching myself to draw in my early 40's, then acrylics and watercolor...all things I still love for sure....but there's something about how these inks move and softly fold over themselves with soft and hard lines that I've fallen in love with...so I'm excited to learn and you're a great teach and much appreciated!!!! You are so methodical with that dryer. I'm practicing with the air bulb and I have the dryer, but just wanted to get a feel for how the ink acts before I use it. I love your work so much.

Thank you thank you for explaining why you gets those flaky speckle bits. I just started using the ink and this happened to me and sis to know why. Now I can re-watch your video for the excellent instructions you give. And most of all your art work is beautiful.

I have been doing Acrylic Abstract paintings for over a year...LOL, I find that SO much easier than Alcohol Inks. I feel like a failure when I see all these gorgeous works of art. Mine look awful! Have tried my airbrush (not a good idea), the rocket bulb (I like it, but still could not get it looking great), and the hair dryer (which I have been using wrong). After watching you today, it gives me the inspiration to try again. Thank You

Thank you soo much that is beautiful! I also love how you explain things, and even willing to help! You go back to the beginning and how you've learned as you went along. I just started alcohol inks and I absolutely love it but it can be a little frustrating when it's not turning out right, feeling like I should just give up, like you said you felt at times. Thank you soo much again, you've given me hope, and your work is beautiful....

Hi Lorrie. I'm so thrilled to have found your channel. I only discovered Alcohol Ink Art yesterday and I'm in love with it. I have not got any ink or materials yet so haven't actually tried any, but I plan to soon. Lately i've been trying my hand at drawing and watching a lot of KZbin videos trying to learn. The point of mentioning that is due to you saying in this video you first thought nobody wanted longer video's that explained everything. So glad you learned otherwise. I've struggled to find drawing tutorials. Mostly they title them: How to draw (insert a word) but the whole video is sped up and there is no instruction or tips. You can't learn from that. I look forward to watching all your video's and trying this amazing and fun art form.

Thank you for your comment! It’s always nice to hear from people who are happy with the videos. I still try to keep them as short as I can, but I agree with you. It’s not a tutorial if it’s sped up to 10 minutes or less with no instructions on how to do it. I hope you are getting all the information you need to get started with this art form!

Thank you so much for sharing about using the curling iron.I’ve been searching online trying to find just the right one and when you said that I thought to myself I’ve got one,haven’t used it in a while but it still works thank you very much. I loved your video, and I’m definitely going to give it a try. I’m just getting started with this sort of painting, actually this is the only kind of painting I’ve tried so far!

I've recently jumped into alcohol ink painting. Your works are truely inspirational. For now I only have a 'full blast' hair dryer so I need to start from half way across the room haha. But gradually getting better-ish. Thank you for sharing your art.

😃 Thank you for the lovely compliment! Even with the dryer I use there’s a pretty high air flow. The cool setting blows as hard as the high heat one does. I think one of the biggest differences (other than the shape being easier to hold) is the smaller output hole on it. If yours is way to strong, one viewer told me she put a couple of layers of mosquito screen over the end of hers to dampen the air flow. I’m not sure how she attached it though. Something like that might help some as long as enough air gets out that you don’t burn out the dryer motor. 💜💜
