Bishop meadow lock is slightly short. It was noted as such in various historical books. It is possible to get a 71'6" boat through but you go in on your own and go diagonally. That's how we used to do it with our old working boat. 😉 Happy cruising!

Oh wow how interesting 🤔 thank you for letting us know, the boat is said to be 69 and a half feet. So luckily we could just squeeze out 👍

A few years back we were on the Warwickshire ring, going through Birmingham on a 70 footer, on a few locks the only way to open the bottom gates was to lift the rear fender, put the rudder sideways and reverse up to the cill, with someone sitting on top of the boat pushing the bow sideways with their feet. made a very windy day even more entertaining! Last week we had the same boat, on the Southern Oxford where I ended up scraping around the outside of a couple of the tightest bends. All good fun!

You certainly have fun on a 70 foot boat lol 😆

Oh right didn't really miss out on much then? Yeah I know I can't believe how quite it was compared to the Coventry, which we're on now. Cheers William Wallace 👍

that’s the trouble with having a long one you cant always get all of it in. the lock that is. Usual entertaining vid.

What do you mean on the canal you have to be on the right but its sometimes its good to be in the middle until someone comes the other way as it can be shallow in the sides.

They say 70ft can only traverse so much of the UK canal network but surely if you go in sideways you can make most work
@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat Жыл бұрын
You can't do locks that are only 60 feet long which on the leeds and Liverpool there are sadly. But we can do 80 percent of the network and love the living space we have on Olive.

would your boat not have fitted in the lock if you closed the left hand gate and then pulled the bow across as far left as possible with the stern in the right hand corner of the lock or would you have ended up with water in your boat as it came in to fill the lock and your boat being tight up against the front and rear walls on opposite sides and the gates ? Hope that makes sense.

Are there are details in the books you use giving maximum length in locks? If not it might be a good idea to ask the CRT to somehow give advance warning? A good day; no rain, gentle cruising, water fill up and good moorings. See you next time as your adventure continues!

Cheers again Jill 👍 it's not like we didn't fit. But it was a bit of a squeeze 🤣 and no there was nothing in the book 😉, we'll see ya next time 👍

When you have to make a very tight turn to the left or right and you don't have a bow thruster and you cant make the turn in one but have to do the equivalent of a three point, how do you know how far forward you can go without hitting the wall that's facing you when you are standing at the rear of the boat as it's totally impossible to see where the bow is and how far it is away from the wall on the side of the canal facing you ?
@TheFilwud3 жыл бұрын
You soon get used to the length of a 70 footer, I only get to play with them for a week a year and don't have a problem.
@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat Жыл бұрын
You do get used to your boat being 70 feet long and judging the distance 😊
