I understand his enthusiasm... This box is all laminated wood at a list price of only a couple of hundred bucks in 1975-1978. Making laminate sound that good is an achievement! Ibanez Concord guitars are wanted collectibles today, and the asking prices are getting quite absurd. Often these ads contain false information about the top. Ibanez Concord guitars almost never have a solid spruce top. In all catalogs I found two Concord models in the entire range that had solid tops. That's it: TWO and they are as simple as a D-18. The Lookers are Laminated.

In my pile o guitars, I have two that have 2-ply tops. They do not sustain forever, but boy do they sound good as active players. Fun little flat tops, and no worries about zillion $$ instruments getting dinged. I call them pic-nic guitars, and they are fine in the back of the car, and out under a shade tree. Both were super inexpensive used. One I had to do a lot of work like a neck set (it was loose) and a bridge reset. But I did it as a learning project and was/am amazed at how well it turned out. Can keep up with instruments that cost 10X what I have in either of these. And it's one of my wife's fav's 😊

A job well done once again. Also once again I have seen you do this many times, my friend you taught me how to do it. When I go to set up a guitar now, I say I'm gonna put the "Rosa" on it. That is one of the main reasons that guitar sounds so good, it is set up properly.

IP 54 on the caliper refers to it been waterproof and dust proof. Ingress protection rating. The first number is dust resistant and 2nd number is water resistants. In the case of your calipers they are dust resistant but not dust proof and splash resistant but not waterproof.

I have a '77 Takemine (with the old "lawsuit head stock" logo) that was given to me some years ago. Needed a little work, which I did, and now plays very well and sounds good. I didn't realize until a couple y ears ago that it too had a plywood top. Should have realized it did 'cause if you look at the sound hole edge, you can see the end grain of the middle ply, which runs perpendicular to the top grain. A great guitar nonetheless.

There is some differences in the plywood. Regular plywood for construction and furniture usually has all kinds of wood in the inner layers, including very soft sapwood, small pieces, knots etc. You can find the exact same thing on very cheap guitars. For little better "laminated" guitars the inner wood is usually better, sometimes they use woods that would be rejected only for the appearance but still structurally fine.

Ibanez uses three layers of cross-grained spruce for the tops.

Good work Jerry. I have an Ibanez almost identical to that one that I bought back in 1974. Its called a jamboree I think. It sounds awesome just as that one does. One thing I did was enlarge the sound hole about 3/16 of an inch or maybe a 1/4 and that made a difference in the volume of the instrument, which is what I was trying to achieve.

That string winder should have a peg puller built into it. I used to use pliers/side cutters to pull pins until I discovered the pin puller. No more scratches/gouges in my pins from pliers/side cutters now! Regarding plywood guitars, my daughter's Yamaha FG335 plywood guitar that I bought her mom decades ago sounds better than my solid top Yamaha FG365 That I bought my self a year earlier.
@RosaStringWorks2 жыл бұрын
It does have a pin puller I have used every pin puller on the market and always return back to the side cutters. I don't scratch nor scar anything with them. But then, I've been doing it for 40 years.
@nellayema24552 жыл бұрын
@@RosaStringWorks That's where your experience comes into play. I tend to be a little heavy handed, so I was happy to discover the pin puller that was already in front me, but hadn't noticed before! Enjoy your weekend!

I’m sure I need you to set up my guitar but if one string notes a little sharp when fretted, I typically tune it just a few cents flat when it is open to split the difference. That seems to help when using a capo. Anyway, I’m probably just compensating until I can get it set up better!

22:30-22:40 a Martin Light pick of 0.017" is only 0.43mm thick! In my experience, the ideale Martin pick for stremming and picking a dreadnought guitar with. 012"-.053" strings is 0.73mm thick. (Martin sells them in mm in the EU). After buying 50-100 Chinese pick in the mix, I usually give the flimsy thin stuff away. I don't know if I can find any under 0.58mm. Maybe some old nylon Dunlops...

Jerry, I recently bought a Kala solid-mahogany-top parlor classical guitar because on sale I could not build it cheaper and I was impressed by the sound and set up of a Kala Makala baritone ukulele I had picked up. The parlor guitar was not set up as perfectly as the baritone ukulele. I guess who does set up at the Kala factory matters. I am going to lower both the saddle and nut action because it's about 155 at the 12th and 55 at the nut. Since I don't have a nice set of groove files and I need to take quite a bit off I am knocking down the height at the first fret by sanding down the base of the nut to get the Stewmac recommended of around 30 thousands at the first fret for classical guitar. I did buy a spare nut and saddle in case I goof, but hopefully I used up my allotments of goofs. I'd definitely like to have good string files, but the best price I see is about $15 each or $90. Maybe my birthday in about a week will see some string files but till then...
@MrPendell2 жыл бұрын
For many years before I finally popped for a proper set of nut slot files, I used to get good results with a piece of broken fine tooth hacksaw blade and a slightly finer toothed fretsaw blade for higher strings to rough the slots to somewhere near finished depth, and then I would refine the shape of the string bed with a set of oxy/acetylene torch tip cleaners- those are basically a set of short round files in thicknesses pretty much the same as the gauge of a typical set of guitar strings, and a complete set can be had for about $5 anywhere you buy welding supplies.

@ParaBellum20242 жыл бұрын
Very interesting, especially the part where you measured between fret 1 and the strings. One of my Crafters has a buzz on the low E, which sounds like it comes from the bridge, but is partially fixed by putting a small piece of paper in the nut slot. I also had to raise the nut to help solve this problem, but my low E gap is now 0.024". I can't see why it needs to be so high, but any lower and I still get buzzing. The truss rod's adjusted properly, and the bridge height is correct, with 12th fret action about 0.060". Anybody care to comment?
