Great job on the lock. While LPL commented that the pick resistance outpaced the physical security, I think that for certain uses a higher pick resistance is more valuable and hard to find on certain form factors of locks. Two related questions for you if you'll answer. Is the double anti-bypass plates standard? And why choose that core if you need to add anti-bypass plates to secure the lock?

Ender Gaming The one they sent to BosnianBill also had two anit-bypass wafers. As for the form factor of the core, I suspect it is for interchangability with other body/core manufacturers.

Ender Gaming Hi Ender (great books, by the way)! 2 bypass plates is standard for our locks. We chose to go with this design as one of our first products because it’s popular and familiar. Anyone who is already invested in locks of this design can easily switch to MAKO without needing to rekey or replace all locks at once.

MAKO Locks, question for you. I'm a fan of this channel, as well as a handful of very similar ones, and watch them often... Also, a hobbyist amateur picker i guess I'd be considered. Anyway, since tee majority of thefts involving security devices like this are accomplished by brute force, as opposed to a more "technically proficient" means such as this, almost rendering locks w superior "pick resistance" kind of un needed, as shackle thickness and metallurgy are more important factors.... has producing an item of this quality helped sales figures for you? I and the lock sport community certainly appreciate a budget conscious challenge, but I'm curious if the consumer appreciates it as well.

Have picked and tested Mako 427, American 1100, Paclock 90A pro, Abus 72/40, and even the Night Watch clone. The absolute best pick resistance and challenge came from the Mako 427. My favorite locks to pick, and my favorite to secure my locker. 10/10 for fun and function

Another excellent show of skills, I'm always in awe of your prowess in picking. That core gave you the most trouble that I've seen you have in regards to a shackle lock. You still were able to get through it rather quickly, but I have some respect for that Mako Lock brand. A fairly thin shackle gives me some pause I look forward to seeing a destructive test.

Happy to say, I went home for lunch today and my Mako was waiting for me. It is very nice. I did pick it in about 5 min. using a Peterson Gem 18. But it did put up a fight. I will play with it more over weekend. Ok, EDIT !!! I picked it like I said, but after work and since then it hasn’t been so straight forward. It reminds me of my American 5200’s. Big time. Great challenge.

I just ordered a Mako lock. It’s been over 2 hours of dedicated pick time and I’ve only had slight false sets. I’m not a talented picker… at least not like I thought 😢

Very cool, can’t wait for destructive attack(s). Of course there are bigger locks available? LPL did a series on gun locks and it was disappointing, but smart people use multiple levels as do I. I have loads of padlocks for work and firearms security, (locked cases, even in my safes) and construction. I’ve never had a work lock picked, they are always destroyed, typically by one or two hammer strikes. (Still a good idea to have pick resistance especially if it doesn’t increase cost significantly).

I ordered one, came today, and there were 2 bypass wafers in there. 3 serrated 1 standard 2 spool and then 2 serrated key pins. Great lock.

Yup, the manufacturer replied to me and said they always install two, to prevent puncture and manipulation. I’m guessing that if you can punch through two wafers then no lock of this type is safe from you. Looks like a well priced lock that gives you much more security then you pay for. (Against hidden attacks in any case, grinders and bolt cutters will always win).

I'd like to know your pick time on the other lock, now that you've gotten a feel for this type of lock! I've got mine in the mail, and I can't wait to get a pick in it. I really suspect that the style of serrations on those drivers are going to make it much tougher than the American 1100.. on those it is fairly easy to tell a click from a set... these looks more deceptive in that regard.

Hi LPL! Love the channel. Quick question for you! Can the MAKO Mo. 427 - Rekeyable Rectangular Padlock be raked open like the in the Bosnian Bill episode 269? I was considering purchasing some but not if they can be raked open like this. Can you test it for me? Per their website, "A vast improvement on a classic design" but to me, a new comer to the lock work world, the cores seem similar if not the same genera.

I have a cheap Chinese padlock that has the exact same bitting, same key, same amount of pins. The key is almost a photo copy except it says 60 and has circle with a mountain in the middle of circle.

Yes works great. It has alot of spring tension but its sloppy and no security pins. That bitting is almost exactly the same as a L rake/city rake. You can tension and hit it just right with the rake and it pops in seconds.

LPL.. I've been a fan for a little bit now. So for destructive attacks, how many ft lbs of torque do you think it would it take to shear the pins. Do you think a hand impact driver (200 ft pounds) could shear them?

Good question. There is a spring loaded mechanism inside that makes it possible. These are very common. 👍

I'm sure there is a little bit of trickery going on because normally a symmetrical ball bearing shouldn't really care whether you're opening or closing the lock, right? But I have an idea that involves the longer side of the shackle "keeping it unlocked". Doesn't really matter :) It's just a concept i wasn't aware of until now.

What is the function of the serrated pins and the spuls (sorry for the misspelling)? I assume it is to make the picking harder, I just can't see how.

Serrated pins make you unable to tell whether the pin is truly set or not. Did that click come from a serration or from the pin clearing the shear line? You can't know until the lock pops open. HelpfulLockPicker likes to pick serrated pins one click at a time for this reason. Spools create counter-rotation (the core moving the other way) and possibly dropping pins. Any dropped pins must be repicked.
