How to Setup a Default Template for New Documents in Microsoft Word

Once in a blue moon I get the urge to change the normal template to my preferred settings, so every time it involves a slightly different process (as Office changes every so often...) It's been a while since my last time, but thanks to you, Richard, now I know how to do it for the current version of Word... 🙂👍

Very useful video. Thank you. Is there a way to go straight to the classic save as dialog box when you press save or save as? I hate that I have to go through two different dialog boxes to get to it where in older versions of Word you didn't have all this bloat.

Thank you for the video! It was really helpful. One thing - I have 365 and although I followed your instructions it still saved the new template in a different templates folder. However all I had to do was find the normal template's and the new template's folders and move the latter into the correct folder, so I could delete the old normal and rename the new one as you say.

Thank you so much for these instructions. The instructions provided on the Microsoft support website are inaccurate because they say "just open Normal.dotm, make the changes, and click save" which does not work. It doesn't mention that you have to change the default file type from regular Microsoft Word to Microsoft Word Template, then save it under a different name. This video is much more helpful, they should pay you to write their support pages.

There is a much easier way. 1) Open the Blank document. 2) Make the Font changes you want to the blank document. 3) Click the half boxed angle downward slanted arrow in the Font section to pull up the Font entire menu. 4) Click set as default. 5) Select all documents based on normal template and hit okay. Same method will work for Paragraph, Styles, etc. You're Welcome! I searched for 30 minutes trying to figure this out because I hate the Aptos font as it creates an error saving to PDF and I don't like the auto paragraph spacing.
