First test run of a 5 LW Gardner Diesel. It came out of a boat that hadn't been run for a lot of years at least 5. It had water in the oil and someone had removed the oil filter. (we think someone put water in the oil)

One of our buses at a transport museum has one of these in it. Only been rebuilt once in 67yrs. That 5lw almost looks brand new.

My friends dad had one that was immersed so long the sump corroded away, replaced sump and oil and it fired up! indistructable engines!

Good old Gardner! I used to drive Bristol KSW buses with this engine - that engine sounds just fine to me, with characteristic snort. Also, they often blow a LOT of smoke when cold, which yours doesn't. I reckon you've a good unit there. The best thing about Gardners is that they go on, and on, and on - very economical and very re-workable if you have problems. Parts for the 2-pot part are hard to come by though, even in the UK. Good luck with it :)

We had those in the Scammell Pioneers in the early sixties. Would disappear in its own smoke when started in those German winters. :)

I used to drive an ex Darlington Corporation Daimler CCG5 bus with Roe bodywork and 5LX engine. Progress was ‘sedate’ (read ‘very slow’) but boy it sounded nice.

Reliable old things but when put to work lacked any power or torque.
