With all the rage of new cameras capable of shooting 8K videos, ridiculously high Megapixels, even smartphones these days have 100MP cameras, I thought it was time to revisit where it all started for Olympus - their first ever Digital SLR E-1. This is a 17 years old camera (released in 2003) and has only 5MP image sensor, though that is a Kodak CCD image sensor that was well-praised for its incredibly beautiful color rendering. A dinosaur DSLR with only 5MP, 3 AF points and barebones function/features, can the Olympus E-1 survive in 2020? I brought the E-1 out for a full day shutter therapy session and here in this video I share my experience and many, many fresh images from my street photography session! Interesting angle, Robin! I wonder what your opinion is on the first E-M5, since you wrote a long review when it came out in 2012? The E-M5 is seen as a seminal camera. It would be interesting to see if it can still keep up with later versions in its range, from Olympus and the competition. I still find it quite up to standard, easy to carry, and useful as a backup camera. But of course, I'm not able to compare so many models.

The E-1 Ergonomics are still the very best. I have had mine a long time but still get that thrill when using it. Obviously I mainly use my EMIX but there are times when the E-1 is plenty. I agree with everything you said about it, Robin!

Hi Robin, I'm very pleased to share my experience with the two E1 I got. What I like of the camera beyond what you have already well explained is that it has only the neccessary for a photographer and this is what make good photographers grow up. Nowadays there are photographers that are videographers or something like that, We can see great shots on the web but they're always abundantly photoshopped. I'm pretty sure that if we put the E1 in the hands of great photographers from the analogic era they easily overwhelm almost any modern video-photo-cellular-photographer with a 7 thousands camera. In addition, I'm really fed up of continuous evolution of the cameras. Afterall I have 90 years of professional photographic history in my family (my grandfather was awarded by kodak in 1979 to have been one of the pioneers in the photography of the early 1900 and my father was awarded by professional photographer organization here in Bergamo) and all these evolutions and changes led me to understand that photography is no more to fix into an image what one have inside, but only a way to show magic effects, that translated is the transposition of what humans have become, exteriority with nothing behind the door. Just as an example Jeanloup Sieff

Great video , been following your blog for sometime. About 5 years ago, my E 520, kit lenses, 35mm f2.68 Macro & C5050 were stolen. The E-520 was my first DSLR. Photographed several weddings with this camera, before retiring and turning the business over to my daughter. I started searching for replacements for the stolen equipment, when I found an auction, for a national studio, going out of business. They were offering E-1's with a Sigma 18-125mm lens. I grabbed one. Since then, i started looking for other E-1 system stuff. A little at a time, I've acquired FL-40 , Fl-20 flashes, 2 kit lenses, 50mm f2.0 macro, HLD-2 bat holder, spare batteries, and assorted cables. And yes, 5mp is more than enough to print 13x19 prints on my Canon printer. I can not believe the image quality that 5mp can produce. Colleges ask, "Why are they photographing with 20mp" when I produce prints like this with 5mp. The E=1 had 66K shutter activations , which I thought was high, but apparently not. Last count I had 71K. If this camera dies , I'll go looking for another or an E-3. I love the 4/3 system and will stay with it. I also found a C5060, as a replacement for the C5050. Now I follow your KZbin vids. Enjoy the coffee. KB.

The E-1 was my first DSLR camera when I bought it second-hand in 2005. I fell in love with it immediately, and it was for the same reasons you describe in the video. The colors of the CCD were impressive, and the blue sky was overwhelming. And, yes!, I used to love the shutter sound, much more pleasant than the one of the E-5. The E-1 came with me to Uzbekistan, Japan and China and it made me definitely believe that digital was ready to replace film. The main downside was the noise above ISO 400, but I came from the times when a film 400ASA had huge grain, so who cared? And it had only 5MP, but I still have at home pictures from it at about 24x30cm and people get amazed for its quality (technical quality, I mean :-D). A great camera I still have with me now and forever, no matter I use the much more modern and convenient E-M1 Mk2.

You really served up a nastalgia sandwich today. I used to run two E1's in a professional capacity. They really embodied the idea of the whole being very much larger than the sum of its parts. I consider the 14-54 as the 'kit' lens, and when you add the 50-200 and the 7-14, we had a phenomenally capable compact weather sealed system that focused close and went from a 14-400mm equiv. I had the view screens switched out so one had grids in the display, and one had split-prism focusing. It was amazing that Olympus made that possible. I used to stand in the pouring rain getting mood shots while other photographers were panicking around me. I loved loved loved the E1.

Wonderful story and beautiful pictures. I own both the E-1 and E-3 and I always consider the E-1 as the younger sister of big brother E-3. There is so much magic in the E-1 that I still use it a lot when I feel like going ‘back in time’. You should know what you are doing, but once you know her...yes...her, she is like wax in your hands. The handling, feel, buttery shuttersound and looks still gives me so much joy. I have the 14-54 and 50-200 and the last in particular is still my favourite lens of all time, although I now have the Panasonic G 85 with so much more technical things. The pictures I took with the E-1 all have that magical colour and mystery. Never sell mine. Thanks Robin for your enthousiatic review🍀

The Olympus E-1 was one of Olympus' most beloved cameras for it's ergonomics and colors! There were fans that just couldn't move on to the newer higher megapixel models because of their love for the special E-1 image quality that they felt no other camera could match.

Thank you for your wonderful video on the E-1. I bought one about 6 months ago with only 1,500 clicks on the counter. I already had the 50mm and got myself a 11-22 and a 50-200 for little money. All high quality lenses. It's a beast, like you said. Amazing IQ and colour rendering. It slows you down a bit and makes you think and act upfront, almost like in the old days with my OM-2. It's gives me such a big smile when I see the results on my screen!

The E-1 was out of my price range back in the day. My first Olympus dSLR was the E-330. It had a very unusual and unique design which made it compact and attractive, but also resulted in a very small viewfinder image. That said, it too had an awesome shutter sound, much like the E-1, and it was capable of taking superb images in good light. I still own it. My favourite Olympus dSLR was the E-30. What a beauty! I used it for years, and then sold it to another person who still uses it, as far as I know. I rather regret selling it though. In some ways, I wish Olympus had continued to develop four-thirds, but their m43rds also turned out to be excellent, and I will never part with my E-M1 Mk I, which I still use almost every day.

Stunning colors! Camera looks like you just took it out of the box. Never hold it in my hand but it looks so solid with lots of confidence. Looking on your pictures, Robin, I just realized - if there are young person, who is aspiring to learn photography and with limited budget. These 15-17 yeas old professional cameras , which are build to highest possible standards are making lots of sense. Yes, it is 5mpx, but also means you do not need a very powerful computer to do post processing , no need for huge storage. These cameras, like E-1 will be absolutely amazing learning tool which is capable to deliver astonishing results. Well done, Robin! Another excellent video.

I totally agree with your throwback review. I still have mine. The E-1 certainly was an ergonomic dream it is a classic today and many of us would have established our roots and yes even loyalty to Olympus because of the quality it exuded.....and it was totally weatherproof which was the reason I went with Olympus from the start. One other thing that kept me with Olympus were your reports on new lenses and bodies, they were thorough and insightful and really helped my understanding of the capabilities of the system. So thanks ...again.

I still have my E-1, and also have the two lenses you used in your video. When I bought the camera (used), in 2006, I got it with the 14-54 mk1 and the 50-200 mk1 soon followed. After I moved up to the E-3 a few years later, my daughter was taking a photography class, and I bought her the 14-42 to use with it. I still love the camera, although I don’t use it much. The last time I did, it was in pretty dirty conditions, and the weather-sealing held up perfectly! I put the 50-200 on it, and it gave me great results. It is great to hold, I love the camera’s color rendition, and it sounds better than any other camera I have ever played with! While I don’t use the 14-42 at all, and am hoping my youngest child will put that combination to use when she is ready to learn, I still use the 50 on my E-M1 mk2 all the time with an adapter. In the meantime, I will keep the E-1 ready for those times I don’t want to risk my newer equipment!

I got the E-1 in 2004, together with the 14-42 and the 50-200 plus the TC-14. . Today,, I use the E-M1 Mk. II with the 50 mm Macro a lot, too, and also the superb 300/2.8 for wildlife. Not the fastest combo, but still a lot of fun to use, and the results are pretty good, considering I always shoot handheld.

From using this for many many years I have to say It will always be my first Olympus love. This after owning E1, E3, EM1 and now the EM1X. And the 50mm F2 Ohh weeee (with the MFT adapter) . My mainstay portrait lens still today. If anyone really wants to enjoy their craft using Olympus go ahead and pic up one of these and a 50mm F2 you will be surprised and amazed. Especially if you are out putting to Online Media like Instagram. Oh.. And it's built like a Tank. Redefines the word tank actually. Feels superb in your hands especially with the vertical grip. Make me excited seeing Robin using it. Thanks Robin

I enjoyed owning and using the E 1. It was such a comfortable camera and as you've clearly demonstrated, more than capable of making beautiful, sharp images. I used this camera for all my freelance work for a local newspaper from 2005 onwards, using the brilliant 14 - 54mm Pro zoom and 50mm f 2.00 - equally good - and never had anything but compliments from the photo editor, who assumed, probably, that I was using the compulsory Nikon or Canon. I'm still using all my four thirds lenses, but nowadays on an E 3 body, or ft to mft converter. Your portraits are really lovely and show how skilfully you're able to empathise and connect with your subjects.

Rob Trek has a video about how to set up a Kodachrome color setting in the Pen-F. I think that the E-1 has more vivid colors than Kodachrome had. I always liked K 25 because of the more natural and not too much saturated colors in comparison to other (E6) slide films.

You're spot-on. I don't have a E-1, but some of my best work - to my taste - was made with 4 and 5mp cameras, one of them a compact! For everyday use, for normal prints and if you're not printing murals 5mp is plenty. Your work is, as always, lovely. Beautiful compositions and I love the saturated yet natural colors, with great contrast. Take care of that E-1, it's a lovely classic already, and the Oly optics are great.

Thank you for the video. My E-1 still has regular outings. You should try the handling with the HLD-2 grip if you can find one. Vertical and landscape shooting feels identical. On the shutter - I remember chatting to an Olympus engineer at the first Photokina after it launched who explained they brought experts into the design team from the micro-recorder/audio division to help them get the "right" sound and reduce the level of noise for the shutter action. That's dedication! Of the iterations of OM and OM-D cameras I have used professionally through the past 4 decades, the OM-2, the E-1, E-M5 and E-M1 mk ii all have uniquely satisfying shutter actions/sounds that make you want to find excuses to use them. I still use one of the 14-54mm HG lenses I got with my E-1s in 2003 and, in my view, it is every bit as as good as the newer 12-40. As to reliability, both my E-1s ran to more than 100K shutter cycles and the remaining one (I sold the other) now has 104k. That body is never leaving my collection and will be gently used to keep enjoying it for as long as possible.

Great to see you revisiting such an old camera digitally speaking. Images were amazing, just goes to show you don`t need the latest cameras to take great images. I still have my E-330 7.5MP and it still works fine. I remember seeing some images from a photo shoot in a woodland I think by some Czech photographers and they were testing out the Olympus Fourthirds Pro lenses with the E-1 & E-500 I think and the images were stunning. These older cameras are ideal for students and new photographers just starting out and wanting to learn as the Oly SLRs & Fourthirds lenses can be picked up at low prices (E-1 though still has a higher asking price) although prices seem to be creeping up a bit recently. Anyway thank you Robin for another great video.

I'm surprised the highlights weren't really blown out. That was something the early DSLRs suffered from badly until about 2008 or so. This was a really bold camera. I thought Olympus was smart to change the form of the camera given that they didn't need a film transport. Unfortunately, the buyers preferred DSLRs to look like film SLRs.

My first digital camera was the E-500, but after a couple of years an E-1 came up for sale at my local camera store for a very good price. I loved that camera and agree with everything you have to say about it, Robin. It's still the best handling camera I've ever used.

Great video Robin and amazing timing! I have just brought an E-300 that should be arriving any day now. Not an E-1 I know, but the next 4/3rds camera Olympus released after the E-1. I would LOVE an E-1 eventually as well. Your great images and shooting experience goes to prove that 5MP is more than enough for online sharing. Can't wait for the E-300 to arrive and enjoy my own 'retro' camera experience! Would dearly lov that E-1 though....

Cool video, nice to see Oly retro kit. I had the E-410 which is was super small and light. I sold it on to fund a 2nd hand EM1. One thing common with the old and new is ive never had dust on the sensor of either of them unlike Ricoh GR and Sony A7.

As with any modern camera equipment, or older film camera,s “ it,s not the camera but the person behind the camera that shows what the camera can do. If you love what you are doing then everything else is pure magic in the end result.

Lovely images from the old camera. I’ve heard more than once that shooting a camera with those old Kodak CCDs is like having a never ending roll of Kodak film. 5MP? That’s about the level at which photographers started looking at getting print size and quality similar to 35mm film (within the narrow dynamic range of digital for the era). Now it’s just crazy - you can get huge prints from 16 and 20 MP Olympus bodies.

I bought an e1 new and still use it every day. The e1 was warretied for 150,000 shutter actions by the way. This camera above all others makes me smile every time i use it. I also carry a flash in my pocket too for it

I remember when the E-1 came out and we tested it at our studio whether it would be suitable for some catalog product shoots, that we did back then. Did not buy it, but it was impressive anyway.

Hi Robin, I have the E1 and I am still keeping. But I haven't used it for long time. I did not sell it because of the reasons you mentioned, photo colors, ergonomics, etc.The camera is still in great conditions, but not sure if the battery is still working. Thank you for bring my memory back for the old days

I purchased my E1 in 2005 and switched from medium format to digital. I still have one 16x20 hanging in my studio from it and it can hold its own against my EM 1ii for a studio camera. I only got rid of it and moved up to the E3 cause I wore it out...

My first and only DSLR is my E620. Pretty happy with it. Before I saved enough for a E5, Olympus got rid of the E line. After a hiatus of almost 10 years, I felt the itch to shoot after watching your video and got myself a omd em1 m2. Then OLYMPUS sold its camera biz.... However, I'll keep shooting with my m43 and build my lens arsenal. I'll stick to the m43 system until I can't get a camera body from anywhere anymore. PS. Thanks to Olympus' ending 43system, I was able to buy a top pro grade Olympus lens for CHEAP!!

You, sir, are further proof that it's the photographer that matters, not the camera. You would make great photos no matter what camera you used. I suffered for many years from "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" and so have more cameras than I know what to do with. Yet, I love them all. As for the vaunted Kodak CCD sensor in the E-1, I simply don't see what the fuss is all about. I've done comparisons between my OM-D E-M10 Mk I and the E-1 and I feel the former camera is superior. Of course, I'm talking about color rendition, not sharpness. Sometimes I wonder if this discussion of color rendition mirrors the old discussion about whether vinyl is better than tape with music reproduction.

Had one for 15 years, tried many other, ended up selling them and sticking with E-1 - exactly because of what you described. E-10 and E-1 are the only two cameras that just don't disappoint.

It was my first DLSR. Ruggedness of the earlier Olympus point and shoots sold me on their weather sealing. I now have a EM-1 Mk ii and an EM-1 Mk iii and a nice collection of lenses because of the positive experience with the older Olympus cameras.

Hi Robin...don’t have the E-1,but do have the E-3 & E-5 & shoot with them all the time. Also have the E-500 & E-300 which have that sweet Kodak CCD sensor. More crisp & like the beloved Kodachrome which many of us old film shooters greatly miss. Still use many original 4/3 lenses as they are superb too. Enjoyed your “shutter therapy” vids where you praised the early legacy lenses like the wonderful 14-35mm F2.0. As well as the 50mm macro. The 50-200mm is also a superb performer for sports. Nice photo samples (as always) that you produced from the E-1!

Bought my E-1 used in 2015 with 68 total shutter actuation's on it. Now it has 147 actuation's as of Sept. 18th 2021, so it's still a beautiful, pristine new condition camera. I use one of my E5's or my EM1 for daily use.

Late to the comments and seeing the video, but I do love the E-1. I got mine for $69 as "non-working" from ebay two years ago, since I never got the chance to try it out back in the day and I was more than lucky to receive a near-mint camera. It's better handling than my E-3, I love the colors and the legendary Olympus blue. The Kodak CCD has a really nice grain to it, that feels like film. It is extremely reliable and well built.
