The struggle was real back then, Ru mentions it constantly. He was couch surfing, many of his friends were taken by the AIDS crisis, battling addiction and encountering pervasive homophobia. Today he's a superstar but here he was just another struggling artist with hopes and dreams.

This video feels so dreamy, yet a bit melancholic. These folks are putting themselves out there in ways no one ever dared to before, clearly at the risk of their safety and person hood. They're experiencing liberation _so concentrated_ that its literally impossible to replicate nowadays due to us (lgbtq+ folks that is) having far more privilege, acceptance, and power in our identities than they could have ever dreamed of in the time this was filmed. True icons, these folks.
@JoinTheProgress Жыл бұрын
Most people have always accepted the gay community. The problem in 2022 is that "privilege" word you used, whereby it's gone far-overboard as a political tool; it may end up...as it has begun to...creating the opposite effect.

(Think the moment on RPDR S4 where Chad and Latrice are talking about the police abuse in the clubs) ACT UP, Harvey Milk (whom we can thank for commissioning/inspiring Baker to create a 'banner' 🏳️🌈), the bathouse raids in Canada, or even films (I swear to you there were 50+ queens who couldn't name the stars in RHPS "Vinent Price" SMH) As SOON as I realized I was queer, I hit ever book, documentary, film ect I could get my hands on. @asian dude RuPaul became famous by doing drag shows. He and Lady Bunny used to live together in abandoned apartments in New York when they were poor and young and while both doing nightly shows at gay clubs back in the days when these shows were not popular like today and hardly payed any money. He became so famous doing them that he met some music producers who created his first hit single Supermodel..which became a number one hit worldwide. After doing music for many years..he created his production company WoW (World of Wonder) and then created his show RuPaul's Drag Race and other shows..which made him the multi-millionaire he is today. Hard work and perseverance is why he is the most famous drag queen artist today. Nobody gave him anything. He worked for it and created something out of nothing. The end.
