Relaxing Hair Wash, Head Massage & Wet Shave at Kitadoko Barbershop in Tokyo, Japan.
We filmed with a fifth-generation barber and proprietor named Ms. Chiyo Funakoshi. The family’s Kitadoko Barbershop, 喜多床五代目 舩越千代. has a very rich history and was established in 1871.
That same year the Japanese government allowed the men with status to no longer have a traditional topknot and they were also permitted to not carry their swords. Sixty percent of Tokyo’s male population no longer wore their hair in the traditional style by 1876.
Back then the barbershop was located across the street from a university which is now the University of Tokyo. The shop became very well known and had 18 chairs and 20 staff members.
Since opening, the shop has moved a couple times and it is now located downstairs in a modern building.
In 1990, Chiyo began working at the barbershop alongside her dad. She is the first woman in the family to run the business. Her dad who is 83 years old still comes to the shop every week and while we were filming, he was helping out 😊

Wow! Even I was there I had completely forgot about the all encompassing service that was done. You walked in for a wet shave, and instead got a nice little hair cleanup, shampoo, massage, shave and then styling. And let me not forget about mentioning that razor she used for the core part of the shave. I don't know whether that was some kind of shavette, or double edge razor, or what have you, but I've never seen that before in my life. I've yet to identify it, but it certainly was unique, along with the constant steam machine. From 12 inch sheers in Vegas, to unidentified razors in Japan. No one showcases unique haircut experiences like you do, which is why I always watch. Kanpai (Cheers!) from Tokyo. -Marc

Im on the hunt myself...from what i can tell it is a 'razorine' style DE shavette, however done as a kamisori. I would LOVE to find out more details and get my hands on one.

John Greco looks like an old 50s or 60s japanese razorine. The newer versions have a screw to hold the blade in place. She is using her thumb here to keep the blade from moving because they were basically held in place by friction.

You are right .. I have to laugh .. some places can use manners like this. I remember a unisex shop I went to in my 20s. .. the lady that was going to wash my hair.. called my name , she’s about 75 , chubby and gray haired kind of stone faced said follow me, I followed her ( a bit nervously) .. took me to the shampooing area it had a long row of about a dozen sinks , says to me take a seat , so I started to sit in the chair and she barks No ! Over here! .. so I move the 2 sinks over and sat in the chair, she puts a towel around me, then like a matador flings a gigantic light blue plastic cape over me snaps it snug to my neck puts another towel around me then says ok lay back and put your head all the way back in the sink.. was kind of scary and I was a bit nervous and embarrassed at this point.. she really went to town hosing and soaking my head .. i was a bit antsy in the chair I can still remember her saying “ you need to keep your head all the way back “! she shampooed me two times, very firm almost aggressive scrubbing my scalp lifting my head up turning it , hose sprayer was like a pressure washer on my head .. it seemed this would never end with the scrubbing/ massaging.. not a pleasant experience rather an abrasive personality for an elderly lady to be shampooing a young man’s hair … was a shampoo I never forgot .. I saw the next guy she was getting ready to shampoo , kind of felt sorry for him he looked a bit petrified..!

I have lived in Japan for two years. I have the utmost respect for that country, the culture, and their people. If I were to live again, I would fully embrace everything. The respect they have for people out there is something else. I used to get haircuts all the time during my stint in the military. This is nothing new to me. :)

Why don't you tell people about the many establishments in Japan that refuse service to non-Japanese people. Is that a sign of respect? It is quite common for foreigners to be refused entry to businesses in Japan, for no reason other than they aren't of Japanese blood.

I hope this comes across in the way I intend it, but Japanese people and culture are made for ASMR. The attention to detail, exacting standards and carefully practiced movements. In almost every profession or in craft, the care they take in what they are doing...it’s just pure ASMR response for me. It’s something we can all learn from and apply to what we do, rather then just rush everything and knock things out just to meet some deadline or quota. Patience, consideration, care, focus and pride in whatever your doing, big job or small. Much respect to them for all that.
