Hi Justin! I've been following your videos for over 2 years now and I've been so inspired by your academic drive. I am also a Canadian who is accelerating a degree at WGU and I genuinely would not have been able to start without the guidance from your videos. After 2 long years, I finally started my program in October and I'm already finished 49% of my degree. Thank you so much for your videos. They have helped me so much!

That's a thoughtful comment, M! Thanks a lot. I'm glad you could go through a WGU program as a Canadian. I know some folks still struggle with admissions. Your dedication to completing almost half of it efficiently deserves a big high-five!

I work at WGU as a Program Mentor,, I did my BS in Business Administration IT Management and just finished MY MS LXD ED and I am starting South College on Feb 1, 2024, EdD. I appreciate your videos, it's helped me make my decision to to South. I'm 59 Years old, it's never too late folks!

Thank you! Appreciate the note about never being too old for school. What's neat about South College's CBE doctorate is that it seems like a good chunk of the students are in their 30s to 50s, at least from what I've gathered in the Facebook group.

Thank you so much for sharing! My Ph.D. program is not competency-based, but one of my current classes is so boring that I have been really struggling to motivate myself to get through the assignments. I really appreciate you sharing!

Hey Maria! :) I hear ya, slogging through boring courses is a real struggle. None of the motivation tactics seem to do the trick either. The only thing that keeps me going in those situations is picturing myself one step closer to finishing the whole course. It's like my personal countdown to course freedom lol

Fantastic to hear this! I’m genuinely thrilled to know you’re thriving, particularly in maintaining a positive mental space. It’s inspiring to see you stay driven and moving forward at your own perfect rhythm! Quick question: does the program include any tests or proctored exams? I’m currently navigating through my master’s and eyeing the DBA program at South College next. Also, is the school operating on a subscription-based model? And one more thing, as a proud WGU alum, did the 3.0 GPA on your transcript influence your application process with South at all? I’m rooting for you, Doc 🎉🫶🏾‼️

Moca, thanks a lot for your motivating and uplifting comment-I appreciate people like you! Your questions were great. In the CBE doctoral degrees at South College, there are no proctored exams; instead, they focus on project-based or paper-based assignments. The 3.0 GPA from WGU isn’t an issue, and many current students come from there. South College uses a similar transcript system, translating passing grades to a GPA, though, final grades land at a 4.0 GPA instead because meeting Mastery on assignments is required. Mastery is an A grade while meeting Competency is a B grade, similar to WGU. Mastery might seem daunting, but its requirements closely align with WGU's Competency level on the rubrics (or, at least that's my opinion). Staff or faculty might argue the caliber is higher, but after completing dozens upon dozens of assignments, I've found that reaching the highest level on the rubric means meeting all requirements from the instructions. So, basically, just meet all requirements. The programs operate on a subscription model, where you pay for a 6-month block. If you work in education, there's a $1,000 grant deducted from tuition. At the time of this comment (Dec 2, 2023), tuition without the grant is about $6,250 per 6-month term, but this might change as the program gains popularity. However, I don’t think increases in the immediate future are happening. Hope this helps!

Nice, I am currently pursuing the Doctorate of Business Admin program at South College. I just finished my second month and my 4th class. Currently I am on the 5th class. Smooth sailing so far, but as you said it requires an extreme amount of dedication and perseverance as it does get exhausting writing so much and so frequently.

That's awesome progress Soetan. Sounds like you're in the swing of things. It also sounds like you've had good luck with having your work reviewed quickly. I had that at the start, though, once I hit the four specialization courses, things slowed down (2-4 day waits for submissions). The ongoing writing is taxing, I agree.

Justin that is amazing. Your videos are very informative as well. Question. Do you think it is possible to do the DBA in two terns too? My intend is to complete the degree in one year.

@@elvinjuarbe2889Thanks Elvin! I appreciate it. The DBA has a similar courseload to the EdD, so it's possible. It will push your limits, but if you're up for the challenge, go for it! :)

@@lifebyjustin hey there Justin. I agree some teachers grade slower than others lol. With a fast teacher I can knock out a class in as little as 10 days. I’m wrapping up my 5th class now.

I’ve been binge watching your videos. Thank you!! I’m in the process of choosing a school for a Doctorate in Ministry. South just launched their program this year (in CBE, but they’ve had the regular DMin already for a while). My main hold back is not having a community/classroom with everything being asynchronous, and I’m a pretty relational person and concerned I’m going to feel isolated and less motivated doing everything alone / with one mentor. Any thoughts on that? Thank you!
@lifebyjustin
@lifebyjustin 6 ай бұрын
Hi Sakinah, Glad you're enjoying the binge-worthy videos! While I'm not well-versed in the Doctor of Ministry, I did notice it has more courses than the Doctor of Education program I was enrolled in. Both follow a competency-based education (CBE) model from what I know. CBE leans heavily on independent learning, which may not suit everyone. Personally, I value instructor input, but I'm okay without a strong sense of community in my learning. The Facebook groups offer some support, but it's mostly about asking questions, not collaboration. Considering the commitment involved, trying some asynchronous courses before diving in might be wise. This doctoral program is a marathon of self-paced learning, unlike anything I've experienced before, and even compared to my previous CBE programs.

Hi Justin, So your program does not have weekly discussion online assignment posts every week? I am considering this program because other online doctorates have that weekly requirement, which, in my opinion, detracts from the primary assignments. Thank you for sharing.
@user-vs7um7tp4n
@user-vs7um7tp4n 4 ай бұрын
None of that. You just follow the syllabus. You do your own thing. No group work, but there are optional weekly meeting zooms you can join. They'll email you the video, too.

Your doing amazing Justin. I am sure you will do great on your Dissertation. Do they give templates like WGU for APA writing? Since your so close to being done will you use the full 6months in the next term to complete the dissertation? if your complete the degree within 9months they wont prorate to save you money correct? I am looking forward to get this program done in the new year.
@lifebyjustin
@lifebyjustin 10 ай бұрын
Thank you! That's a thoughtful comment! At one point, the course mentor emailed out an APA template. However, I opted to use my own because, after a few assignments, I got the hang of setting things up. I'll likely use most of the next term since the dissertation is time-consuming. It takes up to 10 days for each person on the committee to review each chapter (five total), and if there's a revision, that adds up to an extra 10 days. The waiting process alone can take up most of the time. If I finish early, there's the option to pursue a post-doc certification in a different specialization. For the Instructional Design certificate, I'd only need to complete two courses based on what I've taken so far. But by then, I might be ready to settle with the EdD degree and some extra free time. I'm sure I'll be eager to be done! And there's no prorating at South College (at least not that I know of). I'm pretty sure about that assumption.
