a way that i learnt it is that ( ) is the king - and + is soldiers multiply , divide is the captain. Always do the king first if it’s in the question Whichever Captain comes first , Do it first if there is no king. If there are no kings or captains , do the soldiers in any order :) This is how my teacher teached me!

But why can’t we just all agree to do math left to right like we read literally everything else? I understand exponents, they’re clearly attached to a specific number, and parentheses because they obviously exist to be independent, but why multiplication before addition?!

12-5x2 = 12-2-2-2-2-2 12 minus 5 lots of 2 or you could do 12-5-5 12 minus two lots of 5. but what you can't do is 12-5*2 and start with the subtraction.

because depending on the order of how you solve these equations it will change your final answer which is very important. for multiple reasons but some things to think about are. since the order in which we solve things determines the answer we want a specific set of rules which defines the order to how things should be solved so we can arrive to a precise answer and so that everyone is using the same system. if the way we do things changes the solution and everyone is doing equations ( especially longer and more difficult equations since they would have an even bigger variety of possible answers) differently and getting a variety of answers which is considered correct ? how would the teacher grade something with so many answers? Also another thing to think about is, what would you even be solving in a equation where you can solve it however you want and the answer changes every new time you solve it without even changing the variables but just changing in what order you solve it. for example; 6/2(1+2) does this = 1 or does this expression =9

you’re basically running in a circle and wasting your time doing expressions with a variety of answers without an order of operations aka a mathematical property to get you to your precise desired result or the whoever wrote the expressions desired result. without the order then there’s no way to interpret someone’s else’s desired result or someone else yours in something like code without them or you explicitly stating it in english which isn’t always practical or possible. and if you’re not getting the desired result in code then there’s going to be bugs in your code or in engineering something may explode. there’s lots of ways things could go wrong in occupations that use math without mathematical properties to define things and provide structure. just like with language things can be be misinterpreted without the proper grammar and structure. math is a language and the grammar( properties and rules) provide it with structure and logic to make sense. im also not some expert so if i’ve said anything wrong or misleading feel free to correct me. im just like everyone else attempting to learn math. but i happened to have some knowledge on this specific topic so I wanted to share it

Please don't teach incorrect maths. Teachers are having a difficult time teaching maths in primary school. The first impression is a lasting impression.
