Very very cool! I kept seeing Johnson Su things pop up in my feed a year or so ago, but I didn't pay attention because... well I was, and still am drinking from the fire hose of information. I thought it was just another take on composting and I had already decided how I was going to compost, so that was that. I wish I would have paid attention sooner. I think I may buy some to start with, and get a pile going when the leaves fall. Thank you for sharing! You have a new subscriber by the way, I love your scripture sharing, the way you have your farm set up, and the style of sharing that you have. You sir are an inspiration to me!

Sounds like a great plan! Leaves are already starting to fall here with the drought. Happy Johnson-Su-ing!!🤠

@@birchfieldfarming Do you have an update on this cover crop? I planted one with no amendments the first part of Aug. It's not doing too well.

@@Evpat2000We grazed it with sheep in March, then over top with black garden fabric, then planted garden. All did very well. Small ruminants, cover crops, and Johnson-Su are a super triple combo!

@@Evpat2000We canned all our green beans for a year, had friends out to pick, and then just let them go b/c we had so many. One of our best gardens ever.

Letting a Johnson-Su freeze will kill the worms...assuming you added them per spec. Red Wiggler death begins at about 40 degrees F. The pile will likely go hydrophobic as well due to freezing or inability to water. You'll get something useable, if you ignore spec & let it freeze which stops the worm biology, don't vent it properly, fail to water it &/or let it go hydrophobic. It will pale in comparison to what you could have had. I've lost two because of weather. Lost electric for 3 days in an ice storm one time. Still used the contents. I was able to get some from a fellow grower who managed his per spec for 1 yr+. The differece was stunning.

I'd love to see a third trial row with equivalent synthetic fertilizer to the 2lb of compost. Ie how much is the biology effect vs NPK being easily accessible.
@birchfieldfarming
@birchfieldfarming Жыл бұрын
Interesting idea. One of my other questions: With synthetics we know we have to keep adding to get the boost, but what are the compounding, lasting effects of the biology? ie - fungal networks, increased organic matter, water holding capacity, etc? Perhaps, it’s really not apples to apples.

Just a tiny bit of N salt killed all my earthworms for over a year. After 3 years they are still very rare. B4 the N they were everywhere.

Approx. 1/4 acre paddocks?
@birchfieldfarming
@birchfieldfarming Жыл бұрын
Yes, we ran a quantity of 11 paddocks at 1/4 acre each this year, with a few additional overflow areas. Daily moves seemed to work out best for pasture health and animals.

@@nextgenerationbirdboy2479I have no idea on temps - I build it and forget it for a year. I will say this: We used the 16 month old JS compost to start our seeds last month, and it’s absolutely incredible. Plants got larger faster, but what really impressed us was the water holding capacity. When we used regular soil, we needed to water everyday. With JS, it’s once every four or five days.

@birchfieldfarming
@birchfieldfarming Жыл бұрын
After extract application, I did water both sides a couple times with chlorinated water in a germination attempt. Whatever was done, though, was done equally on both JS and non-JS sides. No watering for several weeks now with the rain. Does that answer your question?
