I was able to purchase instructions for this Quiet Box. They are the most compete instructions you'll ever see for a project. All broken down into sections, typed out with computer illustrations and videos! Emailed to me. It's really a booklet. I'll start working on it and hopefully get it completed in a few weeks as time allows. I'll make any necessary adjustments as my generator is a little larger. Yup. Great job. I got the exact same generator and it's not as loud as many. Unfortunately many people buy a big construction generator that's 84 DB without a load, and 100 with.... And that's at 23 ft

I've watched a number of YT videos recently on building sound deadening enclosures for gensets, and I have to say most of them left me wondering 'why bother', as the reduction was pretty minimal. Then I happened across this. Outstanding - both because the thing works amazingly well, and your careful, well thought out and thorough demonstration and explanation. And, importantly, without sending the viewer to sleep. Excellent work my friend. I finally started building your design a couple of weeks ago. My generator is a larger Champion model than yours (#100419, 9000/7000W on propane), but the Duromax 10000 plans that you include in your package are very close to the required dimensions, so I used that version and made the small necessary adjustments in dimensions. I did a lot of searching to find Rockboard RB60 in my area, eventually located a soundproofing construction company that had a bunch in stock, and they gave me a good price. I built the larger version of the RB60 cutting jig that can accept full width or length of the panels easily. I just happened to have a 30" x 60" work table, and the jig fits it perfectly. I visited the local thrift store on a lucky day, and bought a set of 4 serrated 8" kitchen knives for $5.00. I couldn't believe how accurately and cleanly I can cut the RB60! The panel frames are done and went together like clockwork, even with not-the-best quality selection of 1x4s and 1x6s at my local Lowe's. Your instructions for straightening the edges of the 1x4s are magic, and made assembly a piece of cake. I found the 3M Super 77 adhesive in 16 oz spray cans at the local Ace HW, but I've been putting off permanently gluing in the RB60, so as to do it all at once. I'm not sure how long those cans will still spray properly, once they've been used and then stored for a bit. Instead of a Vornado 660 fan, I'm shopping for a centrifugal (squirrel-cagel) fan with rectangular flange-mounting to attach to the end of the box. One of your commentors indicated that the centrifugal design pushes air better and won't cavitate as easily as a conventional circular fan. The Vornado 660 provides 584 CFM maximum, so I'm using that as my requirement floor. I'm researching cheap remote temperature sensors that I can disperse at various places in the box, to monitor for high temperature hot spots, or at the very least, exit air temperature.. My box will be outside all the time, so I used 1/4" exterior plywood for the panel skins, and I'm considering using Bote Cote epoxy to seal them up. I'm also looking at a conventional roof added to the cover, perhaps hinged with support struts. I'll add my admiration to that of the other responders: your instructions package is among the best I've ever seen, and, as a professional engineer for 35 years, (and as a Dad assembling kids Christmas toys for 4 kids) I've seen more than a few. Also, your tips and hints for straightening wood and managing dimensions and clearances are treasures - I wish that my high school shop teacher had taught as thoroughly as your instructions do! You should write a woodworking book for beginning hobbyists, one that teaches how to build accurate designs using suboptimal materials. I have no doubt that it would be the best such resource ever produced!

This is the BEST silencer I've seen from many KZbin videos! Two thumbs UP! A lot of the newer generators manufactured lately provide Carbon monoxide sensors that shut the generator down if it senses carbon monoxide... One thing I will stress here is that IF you're going to run a genset in your garage I STRONGLY SUGGEST INSTALLING A LOUD CARBON MONOXIDE SENSOR IN THE GARAGE and IN THE HOUSE! EVEN IF you're running that exhaust tube outside and up above the roof. In the event that the exhaust clamp vibrates loose or exhaust flange gasket fails. Better a few dollars spent on extra safety than on a casket!

You certainly did a stellar job on this sound box and the logistical thinking involved. I store my generator outdoors with a rubber sheet over it to keep rain or sprinklers from ever putting water anywhere on the generator. I will probably use your method putting a roof on top a foot or so above the top baffle so rain and snow don't interfere. I really like your method with the pins and exhaust removal. I might need to transport it so my older relatives can use it if need be. Rarely does everyone's power go out at the same time here. Of course everything is subject to change and it can happen.

Good job. I did one recently using a permanent setup with carrying handles for my travel trailer using an already quiet inverter generator inside. Setting up an auto start/stop and an extended runtime aux fuel tank, I don’t have to leave comfort of my RV, and it’s that quiet you don’t even know when it cuts in or out whether inside or outside the unit.

Mahalo for da great video. I'm in the process of building a geny stand and dog house for a portable generator that will power my house. Hopefully I'll never have to use it though. Last year during hurricane Ida we had a really small one that would only power the fridge and a few other items. Regardless,... it was really loud, and we shut it off at night. But now I have a larger one, and I need to do everything I can to make it as quiet as possible, without going out and buying a TQG from the Army Surplus Store. I have an area that I can keep mine set up year round, that is out of the way, but the design is what is important. I've seen too many that use a plastic tool shed, and hard, heat/cold insulation instead of sound deadening insulation material. I had a few baffle ideas in my head as well, and your design has fortified my similar ideas. Aloha, from Louisiana (former Kihei).

Great video, and a real optimum design too. Just want to note that a 21 dB reduction in noise, as measured in the video, corresponds to over 100 times reduction in sound pressure, not a 5x reduction. It is a profound difference. Thank you for sharing.

Very impressive design. Lots of high tech engineering in that design. Keep in mind though that many of us don't posses that level of woodworking skills and tools. Adding a temp sensor on the motor would probably show some interesting level of temp rise with the box in place that will affect the generators life span. Also the back pressure on the engine exhaust valves may pose long term issues. I just bought a USED Honda generator for $1000 and none of that quieting is needed. I prefer to let Mr. Honda's engineers do the work. I can run it right out in the open and downwind side of my house and neighbors don't even know it's running. Thanks

Usefulgizmos said: I don't think that will be an issue with my design. I read that if the exhaust tubing has twice the area of the engine's exhaust, there is no back pressure concern. (tons of research so don't have the link to that info now). The exhaust for my Champion generator is 3/4" diameter so has a area of 0.44 sq inches. The flex tubing is 1-1/4" diameter so has an area of 1.23 sq inches. 1.23/.44 = 2.795. So my flex tubing has about 2.8 times more area than my generator's exhaust. The vertical conduit pipe has an ID of 1-3/8" so has an area of 1.48 sq inches. This expands the exhaust area even more. ..... This is by far the best video and most successful outcome of a quiet box build I've seen on KZbin and I've watched lots of them. The box I need is for a compressor which runs loud enough to wake the dead! Your video showed reduction going down at every stage and by very impressive amounts. I think you could have gone down a bit more by sitting the whole unit on thick carpet or a rug to reduce the amount of noise transmitted by the floor. I think there is a real need for this amount of sound reduction as the cheap compressors and generators are becoming more and more popular. I was planning to get rid of the compressor I just bought in order to stay on peaceful terms with my neighbors, after seeing what is possible on your video, I've changed my mind as I don't think it will be any louder than a domestic vacuum cleaner once it is boxed in - we shall see! Hi Martyn, Thanks for your kind and thoughtful comments. Yes, I think you will be pleased with the amount of sound reduction that this design affords. All I wanted was at least a 50% noise reduction but the results far surpassed my expectations. Plus, in addition to excellent sound blocking, the insulation used (Roxul Rockboard 60) is relatively light weight and is extremely fire resistant. No worries about the insulation being close to a hot muffler or the hot exhaust tubing touching the insulation. Have a great day, Usefulgizmos

Great job! I just installed Roxul AFB (zero formaldehyde unlike their Safe 'n Sound') batts 3" thick between my neighbor's and my double condo wall. I then put 2 layers of Homasote soundboard 1/hick each over the batts. I still plan to double all that AND add something like Quiet Rock. I haven't heard my new neighbors yet and I am only half way finished! These ideas work. They really do work well. Thanks for helping me think through a generator box for a food pushcart's generator in this excellent video.

Very impressive. The rule of thumb for motor vehicle silencing is "every 3 dB reduction is a reduction of sound energy by 1/2". If your decibel meter is correct (and I see nothing to indicate that it is not), you're reducing energy by 1/2 seven times; that's huge. (Reducing the sound level by 1/2 is not exactly the same as "quieter to the ear by a factor of 1/2 but it's the best way to scientifically measure and it's a good indication.) I'd only like to ask one thing. You documented the sound level very well by showing a meter read out quantifying sound level. What would help greatly would be if you'd similarly document temperatures with an infrared thermo gun; I bought one for about $30 from Amazon and it's quite accurate and I use it for many things -- temp inside the fridge or freezer, drive an hour and check tire temps to be sure they're all the same (one that's hotter indicates possible failure), all temps of each header pipe on my RVs engine should be the same, battery temperature, etc. They're VERY useful as a tool for many uses. Put spots of tape with a number on on your engine at a few different places. Run the bare generator under load for 30 minutes and record the temps; then let it cool for an hour. Reassemble the quiet box, run the engine again and then check numbers. If you're not getting significant increases, your cooling scheme is working very well. And for cooling, "squirrel cage" (or "snail shell") centrifugal fans will build up air pressure and push air through a baffled path much better than a plain blade fan. A blade fan will stall out and cavitate air resulting in very significant air movement drops if there's any significant back pressure; under back pressure conditions, a centrifugal fan will build up more pressure against the back pressure and continue to move air. You may wish to try one. Finally, a double back baffle system will drop sound levels much more than a shorter or more direct baffle path. Most quiet box systems are let down badly by their control of cooling air, you're right in your emphasis on getting the input and outlet sound level reduced for your cooling air. The excellent exhaust pipe arrangement is also top rate. You've done an excellent job and probably are reaching the point of diminishing returns so that it's really impractical to do much better. This is very good work, indeed.

Outstanding video, plan on putting mine in the garage and exhaust thru the side of the house. I love the box and how it works, unfortunately for me my GF will be doing this since firefighters are usually at the station for hurricanes and major storms, and I don't see her doing all this, so I will have to dummy it down a bit with foam panels. The video did give me some great ideas though, if you had an electric start genny it would be really easy.

I watched a lot of videos different styles and so far, this is the best I think in my opinion. Super typhoon storm Mawar just hit Guam and we are out of power. if you slope the sides out on the bottom it also helps. /````\ like this, it directs the sound down and back. I just use plywood and this method because it takes up less room for travel. works well enough. for a more stationary setup your idea is great.
