6.0 Powerstroke P1744 Torque Converter Issue

Hey, GM dealer here. King of TCC slip at your service. P1744 indicates that even though the torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid is desiring a lock up at the torque converter clutch, that’s not what’s happening. If you put a scan tool on this thing, you can see the input shaft speed and the engine rpm engine rpm - input shaft speed = torque converter clutch slip speed. There are times when a torque converter clutch will momentarily slip. -when applying or releasing the throttle -when the transmission control module desires a gear change into a higher or lower gear range -when the vehicle is at idle in gear. Set the cruise control at 45-65 mph any speed is ok as long as it’s a constant speed on a flat road with no turns. You are looking for a slip speed that is less than 50 rpm in most cases. If it is above that number, that’s what you need to fix. 50 rpm or lower I wouldn’t do anything about 60-100 I’d try new fluid or a new torque converter Over 100 I’d suspect a line pressure problem, a stuck tcc control solenoid, or a valve that is not operating properly due to a harness issue like the comment above is indicating. I’d start by assessing how much the torque converter clutch slip speed actually is. Give me that number and we can run through some checks if you’d like.

Hey man sorry I took so long. First that is a lotnof great information you just posted. Turns out it was a bad converter. When the truck first went back together the radiator had a leak so transmission fluid and coolant mixed. We thinking that there was still coolant in the converter and that was the cause of it all. Converter was opened up and the clutch material had detached from the steel plate I think I'm saying that correctly. It's a shame as it was a built billet triple disc converter with very low mileage

@@six0bros coolant in trans fluid makes for bad days.

That code indicates an electrical problem with the torque converter clutch solenoid circuit. Either a bad solenoid, or a bad internal harness.

Do you think a bad ecm could potentially cause this? Replaced the solenoid already. It was fine before this work and we lost a pcm in the truck. Or would you lean towards the harness

Where was the oil leak coming from on the passenger side? I have a small leak there as well(passenger side rear), I’m hoping it’s not the bed plate.

Mine was coming from the rocker box. It had a Crack in it. I will be doing a video on it in the near future. Try to chase the oil leak up the engine and see how high touch can get. The bed plate is low on the engine if it is the cause of the leak it will just be on the lower end of the engine
