Excellent follow-up Wes ,I always like to find out what the problem is cause solutions are fairly simple that's what makes your videos great and educational.

Yeah the solution for this engine is really simple. It involves a very hot furnace...

The block is probably still good as a core, especially because the cylinder walls weren't damaged. The crank is probably in decent shape too. Not sure it's worth the time to tear it apart though.

If I had to take a wild guess judging by the looks of that I would say the turbo seals failed, oil got into the exhaust housing, from there the oil started leaking out of the downpipe at the turbo and running down the back of the motor. and that was your oil leak
@chuckmackenzie87534 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. That glow plug damage is common & doesn’t cause the huge oil loss through turbo. Overspeed due to oil ingestion or just downshift will cause a ‘kiss’ on piston as shown.
@GiordanDiodato2 жыл бұрын
my guess is that it probably had a lot of neglect and someone never took care of it.

I have a 7.3 leaker and have replaced all of the HPOP o-rings at one time or another. The oil cooler is another leaky spot, and the EBP actuator, and the front crank seal, and the valve covers.... :-) Funny thing is, I had the valve cover gaskets/injector harness replaced 4 years ago to avoid leaks, they didn't leak or misfire up until that time, now they're leaking :-(

My friend bought a brand new f450 4x4 crew cab loaded out with nice flatbed. It was a problematic turd. It blew up the second week he owned it. It was at the dealership for a month then when he got it back it did good for a year or so then it had a problem with the oil pump and went back for few weeks again. He paid Cash for it and after having it studded and upgraded he’s still scared to drive it out of town. It’s got like 80,000 miles on it now. It’s a totally stock truck. He has 5 at his farm and they have been money pits. All of them except one 04 model. None of them are tuned. He’s so loyal he keeps buying them for his employees to drive so he Doesn’t mind the repair bills. We put starters on most of them every year or two with all the stop and go they do. Ford needs to give him a couple free trucks for his nightmares. They do run good when they run though. He would save a fortune just running a whole fleet of like 6.0 gas gm 3/4 ton for local towing and stop and go. They will outlast most of these diesels even if you have to replace the transmission at 200k or so. Just change the oil and hammer down.

Most of the 6.0 and 6.4l trucks around here have died off too. For that matter not a lot of 12v running around anymore either especially ones that don’t look like they have been thru hell. Hard to believe it has been 20plus years since they made one.
@WatchWesWork5 жыл бұрын
I think the only reason we still see 6.0 trucks is that they just made so many. The 6.4s had so many problems that you rarely see them here. I don't know that I've really even worked on one. The Duramax trucks are also very rare here. My brother is still driving a 1990 Dodge with a 12 valve. The body is basically gone. The water pump came apart once and destroyed the radiator. I've lost count of how many u-joints and brake calipers we've put on it. 3 manual transmission replacements. It needs a steering gear. The speedometer stopped working at least 20 years ago, so who know how many miles are actually on it.

Woof Wes. Did they abuse it much? ARP head studs will take care of a lot of head gasket issues. Keep the water out of the fuel system. The 6.0L will run just fine as designed. But they require a lot of continued love. Crankcase pressure was one of the key diagnostic tests. _Dan_

Hit the nail on the head there with "put a tune on it". Pulling 500hp out of a design that was designed to make 300. I've heard it referred to as "full military power" on the old warbirds. A pilot could use it to save his life for like 10-15 minutes. Then the ground crew had to rebuild the engine before he went back up so they were sure it wouldn't fail on the next sortie. Dude's buy up clapped out pickups, "tune 'em" and then complain when they grenade. Of course I did similar things that were equally stupid when I was 20, but I knew better than to complain gosh darn it! (Complaining doesn't impress girls).

Wow, in al my 6.0 adventures, I have never seen a turbo like that, you should pressure test that egr, wonder if it popped. And I've seen the rear 2 cylinders (7/8) with valve impressions on he pistons, it's odd how those 2 are the kissers.
@WatchWesWork5 жыл бұрын
I think we had years of neglect followed by a catastrophic failure. I can't see any signs of coolant in the intake. The turbo was completely toast. So I don't know if it had low compression for a long time and then the turbo blew and ran it out of oil. Or maybe the glow plug came apart and it bent a valve and messed up the cam. Hard to say, but it had some rough times!

after hearing all of the horror stories on the PowerStroke series, I always ask myself is it really worth all of the headache? A family member has one and he's spent so much money on it he can't walk away, but it still needs more money to keep it running. What a money pit.

So you took a stock engine and tuned it to 700 at the wheels and you expect people to believe that? I highly doubt that is the truth.
@lizard20062 жыл бұрын
@Derek I wrote this a year ago and it was 600 wheel. It was a typo. Also when did I say it was stock? It had injectors , reg return , a 68mm power max, ficm tuning... but yes stock bottom end 6.0 capable of 800hp. Jesse Warren had one at 1000whp on fuel stock bottom end.
@007.3l5 жыл бұрын
Judging by the witness marks on the top of the piston , Looks like the motor was over revved either that or the valve recession was not set properly if the head gaskets were done prior. when the heads are cut or machined flat you need to have the valve recession reset, you're looking for the valves to sit about .018 to .020 below the cylinder head surface
@juhomaki-petaja5 жыл бұрын
Chris K. I agree. I think it got lots of oik in intake and ”run away”.
@gephrobodine2 жыл бұрын
Also if you deck the block. If not accounted for, piston protrusion would be excessive, causing that too. I had light valve kisses on the top of my pistons on a reman. Valves were fine so I went with a slightly thicker gasket to compensate. .... When you and others say over revved, can that be done on a stock motor? The governor should cap the rpms at a reasonable number. Some mfgr tests have you use wot.

@WatchWesWork5 жыл бұрын
It would have to be a very small camera. The tip of the glow plug is only about .15" diameter. The tip of the injector is a bit larger so you could pull the injector and look inside.
@PorkBarrel.5 жыл бұрын

Wes, What's this giving up stuff? I think they were using it for a portable blacktop plant. Um, that turbo look tasty though. Come on let's have a master rebuild class on the 6.0, and then park it next to the Continental.
@WatchWesWork5 жыл бұрын
The problem is that all of these trucks are rotting away. No one would ever swap a 6.0 into anything else since the electronics are so complicated.
@eformance5 жыл бұрын
Makes me wonder if the turbo shaft seal went bad, then it digested all the oil in the motor until the HEUI ran out of oil and it stopped, then they added oil and kept going -- oiling issue lead to bearing loss and the valve kisses on #8. I'd guess the FOD came from the turbo, or someone got in there to mess with the turbo and left a nut/bolt in the intake, which it ingested at startup.
@WatchWesWork5 жыл бұрын
I don't know. I think it was the intake valves that contacted the pistons so maybe something was rolling around the intake causing lots of problems. But it looks like this engine had some problems for quite a while before #6 took a dive. And the turbo is wasted so it could have been both burning and exhausting a lot of oil for a long time.
