Thank you for sharing this information. I’m getting ready to do an engine build on my 2004 F-350 Super Duty 6.0 Powerstroke. I purchased a used engine for my build, another 2004 engine, supposedly a low mileage one … once I take it apart, I will have more and better information to go on. I’m planning to get KDD heads, ARP studs, basically give it a complete overhaul and then put it in my truck. I will need to find the right tune for the build once I get to that point … I’m glad that there’s as much information as there is available for these trucks. @williamwittwer4809 they get good mileage because they don't have an extremely restrictive diesel particulate filter, and they never go through regen. Regen burns a lot of fuel in these newer trucks, and people who aren't towing heavy go through regen a lot more often. Regen is the process of the engine burning more fuel to create the heat needed to burn off the heavy soot trapped in the diesel particulate filter. It's extremely inefficient.

@williamwittwer4809 I've owned them all and have extensive experience with all 3 platforms. Common rail injection is much more efficient than HUI injection, simply because it operates at such high pressure levels. Common rail injection found in an 05 Duramax, or an 05 cummins, operates at 20,000+ psi so the fuel atomizes very efficiently resulting in a very complete burn of the fuel. If your were to take a bone stock zero miles 05 F350 with a 6.0L Powerstroke, along side a bone stock zero mileage Ram 3500, as well as a bone stock zero mileage GMC 3500, and you installed a tuner, cold air intake, and exhaust on all 3 trucks, the Duramax and cummins are going to get better fuel economy than the 6.0L simply because they are Common rail injection systems. If we add 170/30 injectors to the 6.0L with a regulated return fuel system and a Fass 140GPH fuel pump, all of a sudden the 6.0L's fuel economy sky rockets! Because we've forced the low pressure HUI injection system to atomize fuel more efficiently with these 3 upgrades. My very stock 05 F350 was getting 10mpg when I purchased it used. It is sitting on 37" tires which doesn't help. I added an 80 horse FICM tune and the mileage climbed to 14mpg after a 1,000 mile road trip. My daughter's 05 F350 is identical to mine, but has 190/100 injectors, regulated return and a fass, her truck gets 20+ miles per gallon on long road trips.

@ the FASS fuel systems that I’ve seen for 6.0 require converting to a sump. Have you seen any issues with this setup? Any leaks over time? I wish I could use the FASS with a normal in-tank setup. Love to hear your thoughts.

@edwardman1742 not at all, I've been installing fuel sumps for over 15 years. I have trucks with sumps. I have NEVER seen on leak. You are correct though! I would never recommend installing a FASS on a superduty without a sump! Thank you for pointing that out!

I love my 6.7 but it's for sale, so I can put that monthly payment into my shop. I have brakes, steering, some cab corner and rocker repair to do first. It'll be my daily and tow rig for materials and hauling my tractor.

List of necessity on these diesels. 1. Dual oil filter setup (AMSOIL set up) & change oil/filter 4-5K miles. If you want it to last 400-500K miles DO I!!! 2. Replace or Make a new battery cable loom, upgrading it one or two sizes larger including ground cable. Fairly easy, fast, low cost. 3. Oil cooler for tranny- Absolutely! 4. Cold air intake - YES! 5. Run XPD Opti-Lube fuel additive!! Toss good injectors cleaner additive in periodically a Must. 6. Upgrade turbo or its impeller. 7. Better Exh pipe 4” or 5”. 8. Dual filter setup on fuel Lift pump. 9. Rotate thru all the sensors & G-Plugs "on a schedule" to Preventive Maint schedule 10. NEVER EVER use any oil additive , never, and NEVER EVER use sea foam for anything! 11. “Recommended" a better ADRENALINE H-pressure fuel pump. Absolutely Highly recommended keep oils -Eng-Tran and filters Clean changed, Tranny oil/filter every 50K mile!

Thanks for the video brother! I recently got into a clean, bone stock, one owner, 2004 Excursion with the 6.0 that lived its whole life in SE Missouri. It’s my first diesel automobile and I’m trying to learn as much as I can about it. We ended up having twin boys in February which brought our total to 6 sons and our ‘14 Expedition just wasn’t cutting the mustard anymore. It didn’t have any cargo room, climbing over the second row to buckle in my toddlers was a real pain in the back and ass, and it really didn’t tow our 6k lbs 30 foot camper all that well either. We also got our first tractor in April, a Kubota L4060, and there was no way that my Expedition was going to safely handle that tractor on a 22’ steel equipment trailer. So we were pretty much pigeon holed into an Excursion if we didn’t want to run convoy when we go camping. I’m not the wealthiest guy in the world and I’m not looking to make 700+ horsepower. I’m looking to build it up to be a solid and dependable family vehicle that can tow what I own anywhere in the country. Videos like yours are really helping me plan things out for the future and prioritize upgrades in the hope that I can make this truck last another 20 years. I’ve already started upgrading the lighting because I can’t see anything where I live with the stock halogens.

They are definitely maintenance babies, I've owned 6 of them over the years, I have not had any of those issues. I change my oil every 3,500 miles. I change my fuel filters every other oil change. I flush and change my coolant once a year. The older the coolant gets, the more it breaks down and start clogging up passages in the cooling system.

once you start the fun doesn't stop! something that you could have added is the fact that both the 7.3 and 6.0 use a HEUI system and the number 8 cylinder in both platforms have a similar problem due to how the cylinder gets the least amount of fuel...and oil if i am being honest. Stiction is a very common problem because of how the system is designed. Upgrading the fuel system overall is a huge plus.... ( listening to the exhaust portion, I prefer banks myself, just my preference) blue spring kit, in my opinion, is another item that is pretty inexpensive and helps keep the injectors happy with better fuel pressure... ( PHP for tuning, you already know where i stand on tunes haha) Lastly, keeping these things serverced on a regular basis is also another key point to keeping these engines ( 7.3 or 6.0) happy and healthy. You and I have already had this conversation before, but I think it is worth mentioning. In my experience, while I was at ford, we always had 6.0s coming in with injector issues and most of the time it was due to either poor battery power or not keeping up with basic service and using poor oils with no additives. People would fuss all the time about how they could do the same practices they have done for years on their 6.0s like they were doing with their 7.3s ( that was always a fun conversation with the customer), and to be honest, a lot of 7.3s were not maintained properly either.. so i digress and move on. Keeping up with your basic services will help extend the life of the 6.0. Its not the end all be all, but it is a very important part of owning one of these diesels. I personally use and prefer Rotella T6 full synthetic with Rev-x fuel and oil additives. That is just my personal preference, and something I have recommended before to people in the past. My 01 7.3, when I first got it, cylinder 8 always had a problem, stiction, Rev-x made a huge difference! Never had a problem again with cylinder 8! To those reading this, every tech or owner will give you their opinion on what you should be using. The main takeaway is this, full synthetic and additives are needed! Your truck, either 6.0 or 7.3 will perform much better, even in a stock configuration. Vinny made some great points in his recommendations, smart guy without a doubt! I added in my opinion not to take anything away from Vinny, but to help expand on his points with keeping your rig running good and running right! I think his whole idea, Is to bring a little more awareness to the diesel community as a whole, and dispelling a lot of misconceptions regarding 6.0s definitely needs to be done! There is a lot of bad information floating around out there, especially on the 6.0s. As a former tech for GM, Ford, and International diesel, I can certainly attest to the fact that not one manufacturer has a leg up on another, at least not yet ( although the latest Ford 6.7 is getting really close). Each one has its pros their pros and cons. There is no "best" out there... its brand loyalty... so, if you see a truck you like, go for it! Do not let people dissuade you from buying what you want! Obviously there are trucks floating around that have been beaten to death and were not taken care of.. that happens all the time! Dont let the bad information fool you. sorry vinny, didnt mean to hijack your your comment section here....

@bryancenterfitt7127 no hijacking at all, I did mention the regulated return and it addresses the number 8 injector issue and also makes the blue spring kit a mute issue. The blue spring kit is a bandaid, the regulated return is the fix. I also addressed the fact that these trucks are maintenance babies, I recommended 3,500 mile oil change intervals, as well as annual coolant system flushes to avoid oil cooler failure. I personally run Scheaffers full synthetic, which I mentioned, but I am not a snake oil kind of guy. People will die on the favorite oil hill, I just recommend changing it at 3,500 miles.

@myles5514 we don't recommend any coolant filters, the best option to completely rid the engine of casting sand and debris is to do a thorough coolant flush and change out the coolant every two years. That's going to serve you better than any coolant filter ever would.

Imo Id say the 6.0 has a bad rep due to poor QC on some parts like the EGR cooler and plugged oil cooler since they didn't clean the casting sand out of the block. The other half I'd say is bad diagnosing/ bad techs. O-rings everywhere (standpipe/but they did update it and diesel site has supposedly upgraded that as well. That said I remember when I was a little kid when the 6.0 came out and always wanted one. Now I have one and love it. Still love my Toyota trucks but nice to have something with a higher towing capacity

What would you recommend and what power levels do you think that would be at? Its stock block with all the upgrades you have except for the regulated return, fuel delete and FASS pump and the cold side pipe. I need to get up-pipes as i believe a bellow has a small crack and is hissing. Any recommendations? Would the bigger injectors pair well with the KC Jetfire stage 2. @@michaelaultman9675 any upgrade in power past an 80 Horse FICM tune is playing roulette with the factory head studs, I've seen a lot of people do crazy upgrades without having head gasket failures, I'm happy for them, but I will say those are rare cases. 190/30's would be very efficient as far as fuel economy goes. They would pair perfectly with the KC Stage 2 turbo!

Thanks for the solid info! I’ve done most of the same as that truck. But what about the transmission? I have what seems to be the flare issue on more than the 2-3 shift and kept getting worse so I put in a known good transmission and it’s doing the same thing? I have upgraded the solenoids and gear head tuning. My transmission shops around me are a joke. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

@daronsmith3079 so far the transmission remains stock. At 147,000 miles it's doing great with all the performance upgrades. If or when it fails I am taking it to A1 Transmissions here in Georgia to be fully built, I will do a billet input shift with a Diesel Performance Converters, torque converter!

I've been searching a channel that offers info on best aftermarket parts..I have 2006 f350 4door dually 4x4 king ranch..I tow a fifth wheel..its basically stock, besides egr delete (correctly) ,3½ straight pipe , sinister diesel regulated fuel return, sinister oil bypass filter and coolant filter and arp head studs...im chasing reliability not so much power. My family and I go around south east camping so my truck can't fail. Any info to make my truck more reliable would greatly appreciated. Next mods are mishimoto radiator and intercooler. What u think?

SCT Tuners are great! They pair very well with the Power Hungry Performance FICM tunes. So if you want optimal mileage run and SCT PCM tune and stack a Power Hungry FICM tune on top of that. High pressure oil leaks can't be prevented unfortunately. That's just an age issue. There are many rubber O-rings throughout the high pressure oil system on the 6.0L engine. As those O-rings age, they split and crack. This results in hot start issues. Ford did realize the International design wasn't tough enough, so if you buy new Dummy plugs and stan tubes from Ford, they have upgraded the O-ring with reinforced rubber O-rings. That's going to be your best bet.

I think there are plenty of good options for upgrading the 6.0. but the best upgrade by far is the 5.9 Cummins swap 😂

@@earlstacey2709 as a huge 5.9L Cummins guru, I've found that answer is the fastest way to lose a potential 6.0L customer forever. In my 20's I would say that jokingly, I rarely got the laugh or smile I was expecting. So I stopped saying that to 6.0L fans. I dug deep into researching the engine that they loved, and found it to be extremely capable once these upgrades had been done.

@Dieselfan1997 if you are towing really heavy stick with the 40 horse tune, if you are doing mild towing very rarely the 80hp tune will be fine as long as you have an EGT gauge to monitor EGT's

I tow heavy pulling my rv through the Rockies every year should I do the 40 Ficm tune to be safe? Or with the mods you have which are similar to mine, minus the turbo and injectors kc stage 1 and stock injectors, do you get high egt’s? I am deleted and have a hd Intercooler and hd rad, etc etc.

I am not currently monitoring EGT's I want to order a set of BD High flow exhaust manifolds because they come threaded and tapped for an EGT probe. I want to do that instead of drilling and tapping my factory exhaust manifold. Once I get that done I will do another review video and let you know exactly what my EGT's are doing. For posterity's sake, you want to run the Atlas 40 when towing for sure!

Do you recommend 60 horsepower ficm tune for towing? Paired with a 11 blade compressor wheel. It's got a cold air intake box and a 4-in straight pipe. Where were the atlas 40 be better? I too heavy here and there.

@Andrew-ju4be we only have the Atlas 40 and the Atlas 80, for heavy towing the 40 is safest. For intermittent light towing the 80 would be fine.

Haven't found a 4 in turbo back exhaust. Mines a '06 F350 SRW 2wd studded deleted fass fuel system fuel filter delete Sinister diesel piping and water filter S&B CAC BPD water pump. Stock turbo & injectors & ficum runs great but parts are getting old & failing. My oil pressure sending unit blew out of the base, oil everywhere! Replaced the base, oil cooler and now no oil pressure :( looking at low pressure oil pump. Maybe the whole front cover (hope not) then I'll know if HPOP needs replacement... Sending unit is low quality steel base plate is aluminum, gauling happens, the incident happend between 75-80 (normal speeds in Texas)

@gda4385 if Trump and Elon get rid of the EPA there will be an updated list, as of now that is highly illegal and I've already had my fun little run-in with the EPA at the last shop I worked at. Being treated like a criminal for fixing faulty designed parts is not something I want to experience again.
