Why do they build up rpms? Why not just pull throttle back and go?

Brian G I think if they dump the throttle too hard it’ll dump too much fuel before the turbos spool up and stall the engine (because diesels throttle in fuel, not air). Basically, they’re slowly loading the engine and adding throttle to try and get those giant turbos to start moving air. Once they catch, it’s full throttle and using the clutch to keep the front end down. A good example of this is listening to King of Deeres at 1:37. As soon as those turbos catch she’s full tilt the rest of the run.

Interesting. Cuz i got an old 54' Super 77 Oliver. Its gas. When hooked to the sled i just put it in 1st gear and open up the throttle all the way. Obviously no turbo. I guess its for speed too? Cuz nobody does that farming.

Brian G oh yeah. These tractors are way overbuilt. I think they only have to run a stock engine block. Otherwise, They sometimes run four very large turbochargers, much larger fuel injectors and injection pumps, and up to and possibly over 5000rpm. On your tractor, it throttles on air, so you can just open the throttle and the fuel will take care of itself.

This sport would be a hell of a lot more interesting if they slowed down the weight slider so the tractors could have longer runs.
