6.3 Exploring the abandoned Pensnett Canal in Dudley

6.3 An exploration of the heavily industrialised 1.25 mile Pensnett Branch Canal in Dudley, built by Lord Ward and abandoned in the 1950's.
This route covers the route from Parkhead to Pensnett Chase through the sites of the massive iron works of Woodside, Brierley Hill, Round Oak and Hingley's.

The "Blackest of the Black Country " .. I can see why in the old 20s and 30s photos... I could just about imagine the horrible pollution in that area.. Looks like still industry laden area but some tree and scrub brush trying to survive in that environment.. at least all the smokestacks and smog no longer polluting the air.. Andy, that Drone is a definite asset to you! The first shot with it on here, I immediately looked for the canal line and went "Bloody hell, there it is!" At the Wallows, it ties in with my other (And more major) interest, railways, the Earl of Dudley's railway system actually assembled locos at the Wallows, which were sent in "Kit" form from E.B.Wilson. By the way, would you happen to know what that Air shaft, in the middle of the junction at Park head serves?

Ian -I think it is simply a mock air shaft built for cosmetic purposes. I have an old image of the area from the 1950's and its not there! I am loving drone dimension - but had a scare last week when I hit high winds and a rain squall at altitude - I have never undertaken quite such a frantic landing!

I went through the Woodside Ironworks as well as Hingleys. Not a lot to see today!
