I am impressed with the 6.5 prc. It is the modern day .270 in my opinion. I agree with everything you said. You are spot on. I have only hunted the west and have killed two cow elk at 400 yards and one large mule deer at 325 with my 6.5 prc. I used Hornandy 143 gr ELDx and all three dropped dead immediately. I still hunt with my .270 for nostalgic reasons, but my 6.5 prc is more accurate. I would add that the .270 feeds better and you can carry more rounds in your rifle when compared to the 6.5 prc. If that is important to you.

I have a slightly different viewpoint. I'll be getting a 6.5prc this year. I live in a heavily wooded area. Shots over 100 yards are very rare. 50 yards is much more common. Even if I could take those long shots I wouldn't. Just too much possibility of the animal moving during the bullet flight. So why get the long range cartridge? So I can play at the range of course! Long shots are fun! Just not my idea of ethical hunting.
@HuskerHunting
@HuskerHunting 7 ай бұрын
If I'm gun hunting from one of our tree stands I'll usually grab the 30-30 lever action. It's much more suited for those sub-100 yard shots. Ironically enough, the buck I shot with this 6.5 PRC this year was at a whopping 15 yards. I was wishing I had the lever action that day! Thanks for watching!

I am in Wyoming using PH2 in 6.5 PRC for Antelope and Elk and it is an awesome cartridge. I reload so I can get the most out of it. I will say that I am DONE with the 143 ELD-x exploding bullets. I thought the Bergers were bad about that. The Eld-x is worse!
@HuskerHunting
@HuskerHunting 2 ай бұрын
That’s good feedback. What bullet are you using now? Sometimes I wonder if I should switch to the Hornady Outfitter line with the CX. I want to set up a 7 PRC using the CX.
@MaxairEngineering
@MaxairEngineering 2 ай бұрын
@ well unfortunately I am getting through the season with the Eldx and still figuring out were I will go next. I still have a late season cow elk tag to fill. I am not familiar with the CX. I will need to look into them. After years of hunting with Berger and now the ELDx I will definitely be moving to a bonded bullet. The trick is finding one in stock that has a high BC. Because of the powder I have on the shelf, I will stay with the 140 class at least for now. That seems to be a good range for velocity versus wind resistance anyway.
@jasonharvard4365
@jasonharvard4365 2 ай бұрын
@MaxairEngineering if you want a high bc bonded bullet the 142 Nosler ABLR is a good choice and doesn't explode like the ELDX. I prefer the Barnes LRX 127 grain for 6.5 on elk and long range antelope. Not sure on your velocities, but I'm pushing 3450 with a 6.5-300 and the Barnes LRX 127 crushed a bull elk shoulder this season. It's a better bullet than the CX for mono metal. I too am in Wyoming looking for late season cows.
@MaxairEngineering
@MaxairEngineering 2 ай бұрын
@ thanks. Yeah for the powder I have I need to stay 140 class. Nosler sure is proud of their bullets $$. Unfortunately I heard that they too explode at close range. Was that bad intel? I’m in Laramie btw.
@jasonharvard4365
@jasonharvard4365 2 ай бұрын
@MaxairEngineering my experience with Nosler ABLR is just factory loaded 175s for my 28 Nosler, I don't reload them. I have killed elk from 200 to about 650 with no issues. The 28 velocity is around 3100 which I assume is similar to your 6.5 PRC, yes they seem to be made of gold for their price. I try to stay off the shoulder with most bonded bullets that's why I switched to Barnes, the ABLR didn't explode but they definitely have a larger wound channel and damage meat. Terminal Ascent have also been great, I use those for bonded, but I think they only come in a 130 for 6.5. I am in Casper and hunt the Southern Big Horns.

I picked the 7mm wsm hunted with it for 21yrs already and don’t intend to switch anytime soon. 2000fps at 700 yrds with 162eld x. It’s very comparable to the 28 nosler and ballistically identical to the 7mm prc over two decades before the 7mm prc came on the scene. Kinda funny cause my OG abolt 7mm wsm looks like and is rigged up just like the newer x bolt hells canyon and shoots like one too.

Another quick note - my 270-7PRC is getting 3230fps with a 170 Berger VLD in a 24" 4 groove cut-rifled barrel. This outperforms the 6.5PRC with anything, the 7PRC with a 180 VLD at 3000fps, and a 7PRC with a 195 EOL at 2900fps. I have one barrel chambered and another rifle in process and 5 more barrels on the way with 8, 8.5, and 9 twist. Plan to compare 150 Nosler ABLRs, 165 Nosler ABLRs, 170 Berger VLDs, and possibly some Hammer 162 (?) grain bullets and finally some 155 Barnes LRX Great video by the way

all around. for me that means deer to elk and moose out to 450. it cant blow up deer at 25 yards so muzzle velocity has to be under 3000. I might have to shoot a hungry bear while hunting the the deer, so I want a few decent bullets that can achieve everything on the list, which means it cant really on superformance, berger, or the eldx to meet my above criteria. 6.5prc, fits that. 6.8 western, .280 AI. all great choices. narrow that to 400 yards and you have the .270 and the .30-06 saying hello. no need for more recoil till you are very serious about taking game past 600 or hunting dangerous game and that is outside of all purpose imo.

If you plan on only hunting and shooting at max 300 yards, the 270 is the go-to rifle for deer and smaller game. If you like to dabble in both target and hunting then 6.5 prc is your gun. With the 6.5, you can go to the range and show off to your friends that you can hit steel at 1200yd or take it on a hunt to kill deer, pronghorn, or boar. The 270 has been around for 100 years, and i doubt it will disappear, but i dont think the 6.5 prc is going away anytime soon, either. For those who try to justify the 270 or 6.5 is an elk gun, please step up to at least a 7mm or preferably 300. I will get some flak saying it, but elk, moose, grizzly all need 30 cal or bigger cartridges.

That’s a hard question to answer. I would want something small for critters just in case for survival talking about the rabbits, birds, squirrel, variety. But can’t really use that for the full the fridge hunting. I would have to say depends on where you live and ability. I’d say a .308 would cover everything unless you have the big boy predators in your area. Then I’d pick 300 win mag being so versatile. I just can’t see picking something that you might not be able to find if things went to crap. Running around with a new or recently new cartridge sounds like a roll of the dice for only the reason of availability. I love my 300 PRC but there is no way I’d ever bet my life and existence on that cartridge.

All around for power rifle weight length availability recoil and mag capacity its hard to beat the 30-06. 125 gr to 220 can carry 2000 ft lbs to 400 yards with decent trajectory and wind deflection. 300 wsm is another great choice.

My zero is 300 yards and I don't need no stinking dials for hunting😅 As you get more big game hunting experience, you'll discover that 30 cal and up are much more reliable on big animals, and on target bullet performance is just as important as shot placement. 6.5 PRC is a good deer gun.
@Cjtarinelli
@Cjtarinelli 2 ай бұрын
The 6.5 PRC is an excellent cartridge, but if you want to use all-copper bullets, it absolutely is NOT any better than the old .270 Win. I reloaded and shot both, side by side, for four years. The highest B.C. all-copper bullets available for the 6.5 is the Barnes 127 gr. LRX with a .468 B.C. The .270 Barnes 129 gr. LRX bullet has a B.C. of .463. The powder capacity of both cartridges is almost identical, as are the muzzle velocities, 3000 f/s - give or take. It's all a matter of math, folks: two bullets with B.C.s and muzzle velocities that are the same have the same external ballistics - drop, wind deflection are the same, even with bullets of vastly different weights. In this case, with only 2 gr. of weight separating these two, even the energy is the same. As a matter of fact, the .270 can be driven a little faster than the 6.5 (according to Barnes reloading data), and it has a larger frontal diameter, which actually gives it a very slight edge over the 6.5. Don't be misled by the hype ... unless you don't mind buying cartridges that cost at least twice as much for one caliber than for another caliber that can do the same thing or better.

Of course Jason would pick a PRC if he didn’t then I would think he wasn’t bias😳 6.8 Western, 300 wsm, 7 rem mag! I have been hunting reloading and collecting rifles 60+ years and Hornady had done more damage to the hunting community then any other company other then the democrats. All this long range bullshit has wounded more game then the bears and cougars and had out a foul smell in the whole hunting community with the general public. Trying to turn every hunter into a sniper is not what hunting is about and that’s one of the main reasons hunting is dying off! Let’s get back to hunting and not this long range sniper bull and get the respect back that the real hunters deserve and need to promote ethical hunting!

Yeah, I sure didn't expect him to say 6.8 Western! 😂 They are a good organization though and are an innovator for the industry. I do agree on your take about promoting ethical hunting! Just because a rifle can shoot effectively at 500+ yards doesn't mean that's a shot that should be taken on an animal depending on circumstances. Even though I had this rifle for deer season, the irony is I shot that buck at a whopping 15 yards. I was secretly wishing I had the Model 94 lever action 30-30 with me that day, as it would have been much more suitable for the shot! Thanks for watching!

He’ll until you get into Bears I’ll take my 25-06 on any hunt you send me on including Elk and Moose. I’d rather use my 270 on Elk but when it comes to an effective all around caliber the 280 AI with a 1/8 twist barrel is dam hard to beat even with Hornady’s 7 PRC. Backfire did a video not long ago offering $1,000 to anyone who could shoot 1 MOA, and his results were similar. Even with modern technology that can still be a challenge, especially with a hunting rifle and not perfect conditions. Each hunter needs to decide for themselves what their acceptable range is for hunting. Luckily for me, nearly all of my shots are less than 200 yards. Thanks for watching!

FYI I went to Berger's ballistic calculator and populated your data, 143 ELDX, 2887fps, G1 BC at 0.625 and compared it to my 270 Winchester, 150 Berger VLD at 3000fps in a Krieger 24" #3 barrel with a full case of H4831SC, Federal 210Match primer, and Winchester brass - out of curiosity when you said beyond 400 yards the 6.5PRC will outperform the 270. I disagreed with that statement, respectfully but wasn't sure. Here's what the numbers showed: 270 Win: yards: 400, vel: 2311, energy: 1779, drop: -24.30 500 2154 1546 -44.37 600 2004 1338 -71.94 700 1859 1151 -108.19 800 1719 985 -154.51 900 1585 836 -212.62 1000 1455 705 -284.61 6.5PRC: 400 2310 1695 -25.61 500 2178 1506 -46.27 600 2050 1334 -74.25 700 1926 1178 -110.50 800 1808 1038 -156.13 900 1694 911 -212.41 1000 1586 799 -280.79 As you can see, it's actually not until somewhere between 600 and 700 yards where the PRC barely edges the 270 with some numbers in this case. But the 270 drops less until you get to 900 yards and those numbers might as well be identical, and, there's only a 4" difference in drop at 1000 yards and energy differences are barely remarkable, certainly if anyone wanted to fill a tag at those distances, a hit from either one isn't compatible with life. Your load does carry more energy after 600 yards Of course there are those who will say I'm not comparing apples to apples, that I should have used factory Hornady ELDX 145 grain 270 Win data but to be fair, they should rewatch your video cautiously as you did not set any guides for the comparison, thus, I didn't either and of course used one of my best handloads but it's still a 270 Win and I was following your lead since you were speaking in general terms. I suppose I could run the numbers also with my Barnes LRX 129 grain at 3380fps in my 270 Win over a full case of Superformance powder just to add more comparison but I'm old and it's past my bedtime. Got lots of patients to see tomorrow.

Yes but you have to handload it to get that. The point of the prc is it's already there in the factory load. I'm getting 3,100 fps out of a 24 inch barrel with federal factory and 2930 with 143 hornady. Looking at Nosler's reloading data that puts the factory loads in the low to mid range as far as it's capability(teh factory will never load it as hot as it can be) So if I want to and I might, I may buy reloading equipment for it and shoot the 130's at 3300 fps and the 142s at 3100. Those loads would be a better comparison to your maxed out 270 load and still would be superior...in a short action.

Silly and stupid. 6.5 PRC is a barrel burner. If you're shooting 12 - 15 rounds a year you're set. But if you get serious and actually shoot your rifle, your barrel will be experiencing accuracy degradation by 1000 rounds and be toast by 2000 rounds. If you want a "deer cartridge" it's .308 or 7.62x39. If you want a "long range hunting cartridge" it's .300 Win. If you want "'nuff gun for Alaska and everywhere else" it's .375 H & H. Or you can just man up and get a 12 Gauge with interchangeable barrels.

@@rmichaelzachary8574 when my 6.5prc burns out the barrel MANY years from now I’ll just buy another barrel. Big deal. I’ve got over $5,000 invested in my 6.5prc. Shoots less than a 3in group at 600 yards. No need to shoot tons a rounds a year with it. It’s on and it won’t magically change poi by itself. Got over $7,500 in my Weatherby Mark V .257mag. Took it out for a 300 yard cold bore shot before season after being locked up a year, was off 1/4 inch at 300 yards. Both guns shoot comfortable sub .5moa. No need to shoot them endlessly. The Swarovski scope on my .257 doesn’t move by itself. Point is the barrel burner argument is way way out dated. They all will burn a barrel if shot enough. I have multiple 30cals and same thing. If you finally shoot out a barrel so what, just send it off for a new match grade for a few hundred bucks then get back to killing. If I shoot 100 rounds a year with the PRC it would take a decade to see any noticeable accuracy loss. Again big deal.
