In this video I show you from start to almost finish how to disassembly a 6.6L Duramax engine. The engine used in this video is an LB7 engine but is relatively the same to newer versions of the duramax. If you have any questions or comments please leave them below.

Well done video and excellent mechanical skills! I just did injectors on my '03 CA LB7 (with EGR) and I'm almost sorry I didn't pull the engine. Just kidding, of course. Great disassembly video. Does the pin that locks the crank gears to the oil pump drive gear have a fix or upgrade so the engine rebuild does not have this flaw built back into it again? Sad that the pin is likely too small in diameter or not the right metal alloy to handle the job. I'm no expert but those oil pumps in gasoline engines seem to have a better design to them. How many miles did that engine get before the pin broke? Some of us viewers need to know what years were LB7, LMM etc. Many don't know the code but do know the year.

Give everything a good bath. WD-40/#800 Emery cloth with shoelace the crank journals, spray it all down with brake cleaner, throw in new crank & rod bearings, rings, gaskets, and soak the injectors in cleaner and blow out. Flush all oil & coolant passages. Reassemble all. Send it. Quit being so melodramatic- the bearings did their job; the crank is way tougher than the bearing. All is not lost.

These remind me of another pain in the ass that was the Perkins TV8.540M, a marinized tractor twin turbo diesel. The cooling system was a haphazard design, and required frequent service or else you had to buy expensive aluminum housings. Just changing the raw water impeller and removing the sea grass from the tube bundle heat exchangers were excruciating projects. Assembly, like this one was critically sequential, or else..

Question! will try to be short. had an Lb7 with 400k on it. I did injectors on it twice, second time was rushed and didn't go so well as you'll see. Fired right up and sounded beautiful. In park, sustained 3000+ RPM for a few minutes no problem. no smoke no oil leaks at valve cover, balance rates at idle are 0, +/- .1, great. 2 miles down the road, at about 50 mph, loud knocking noise on passenger side bank and a copious amount of white smoke out of tail pipe, does NOT occur upon restarting engine. Until I reach 50pmh, like clockwork it happens again. but that's not my concern. After a few rounds of this I got rather frustrated and to my everlasting regret, stomped on the throttle after the knocking noise occurred and the engine understandably went dead. re ignition yields the sound of a healthy starter spinning and a very loud thumping noise on passenger side. Engine never fires. depending on what I might have done.. I'll pull the engine and tear it down and try to get it running again. Any thoughts on what I did when I stomped on it?

That keyway that broke off - isn't that just for alignment purposes and the clamping pressure of the crank bolt keeps it all in place? I've seen similar things happen on timing belt vehicles when the crank bolt wasn't torqued enough. I'm inclined to think the bolt wasn't tight enough and then the slop on the keyway caused it to break off. Great video! Keep up the good work!
@jhurley12
@jhurley12 6 жыл бұрын
Quinton Cheatham technically not a keyway, it's a dowel pin. Further keying the crank actually prevents this. And will allow it to hold alot of power, along with an alternate firing cam to relieve the stress off the front of the crank, due to the 1-2-7-8-4-5-6-3 firing order. It's the fire at the end of the order, (3) followed up by (1)-(2) that breaks cranks, almost always at the front. But usually only when adding significant power.

We haven't see the Duramax in Australia yet, AFAIK. Though we are starting to get RAM, F150/250 and will probably get the Chevs if we don't already. Are the Duramax diesels sold as crate motors or short motors like the LS motors? Have all American cars now gone to the metric fasteners? I'm guessing this happened when the modern (from LS1 era onwards?) came in. Have only heard of one conversion here with the Duramax, went into a GQ Patrol. Lots of grunt apparently, but a pig of a conversion.

I have a 04 Lb7. Had injectors and turbo go out last year. After a fresh oil change I have normal oil pressure for about a month or two. then as the oil loses viscosity I’m guessing I lose oil pressure. when at idle it’s around 5-8 lbs and the warning starts dinging. Also after about a month it starts leaking oil out of the overflow tube like it did when the injectors went out. So any ideas on what that could be. Worn bearings? Broken pin like yours? Oil pump? Or faulty injectors

My lb7 truck, first noticed the heater blowing cold air, thought it was the thermostat but checked the oil and there's coolant in the oil. Have I got a blown head gasket? I love my truck and would rather fix it but this is a big project, If a shop only charged $2500 or so I'd get it fixed but I couldn't afford much more and might try it myself. I'm worried it might be something other than a head gasket though, any advice? Thanks.

well crap, i'm pretty sure my oil pump needs replacing. i was hoping it would be simple, but looks like the entire front of the engine needs to come off.. i'm having oil pressure delays, and after watching this, i may have to check that pin. how do you change the pin if its broken?
