Just an FYI people, the reason ambulances are idled for extended periods is because there is so much equipment that would need to be powered by the batteries alone if the engine was not running. I am a firefighter/EMT and we do not just do mindless idling to put more wear and tear on our equipment, the ambulances will die if you leave them off and not plugged into a shoreline.

It's a shame. Alot of fire departments and emergency services that have vehicles with the "pollution controls" are encountering just what the video portrays. We'll I'm here to tell you there is such a thing as a good clean running diesel that's tuned properly. No argument about it whatsoever. Can't remember specifically what department it was. A house and lives were lost due to a truck shutting down because of the pollution control disabling the engine. Try to explain that to the homeowners or family members as to why you didn't show up...

For the kind of use that engine has seen, I don't think a $300 part and 3 hours of labor is that bad. It seems the 6.7L is an improvement so far, we will have to wait and see.

Great videos Billy......you've been a big help to me in understanding Diesel engines. Decided to get the 6.7 in my 2017 FSD250. My first diesel. Test drove the 6.2 gas and the 6.7 diesel......the choice was easy...the diesel kicked ass! The 6.2gas was a dog. My diesel tech friend at Village Ford in Dearborn MI...advised me he replaces these EGR all the time. Anyway thanks again man. Great videos!

I use to think it was a bit of a myth that you would go out on the highway and blow the cobwebs out of a motor. My 7.3 smokes a bit every now and then especially after I have been running it conservative for a few days. but after a good run it seems to come clean. I thought it was just a coincidence or bad fuel or something but now this all makes sense. It's the coke build up being burnt out ( of the exhaust manifold I'm guessing ). Thanks again for the education !

Great information, I have a question about diagnosis on the clog. Did you pull it out because you had a code or did you determine the clog due to a temperature difference on the cooler itself with a lazer thermometer? I have a 2011 F250 with the 6.7 and it has code p0141. Its hard for me to believe its clogged because it only has 78k miles and very low idle time. Any help would be appreciated Thanks
@ssgpentland82414 жыл бұрын
Best idea is to collect the exhaust for the egr system downstream of the DPF. This way the carbon and soot is gone. It also lowers the load on the cooling system. Since the goal is to reduce the oxygen in the combustion chamber to lower emissions, this is a much better option. They already do this on big rigs, and im sure its only a matter of time before this works its way into the medium duty markets. The current egr setup is a result of needing to meet the emissions in order to sell the engines in the US market and were developed rather quickly. They work, but longevity is a problem and this also lets the abrasive carbon into the engines as well.

Bill, I got a question for. What kind of problems if any, are you seeing with the 6.7 PSD? At the moment I am looking at buying a newer diesel truck somewhere between 2010 and 2012. I have been considering the Cummins but I understand once you start tuning and deleted the emissions equipment they start having head gasket issues. The common fix seems to be install ARP head studs. On the other hand the 6.7 PSD, I haven't heard anything bad about them. However, recently since I started looking my buddy who is a Ford Technician told me that at his dealer they have been coming in often with inconsistent issues. Things like boost issues and DEF problems on the equipped models. So what is your take on the 6.7 PSD? What problems have you seen from them?

I was reminded of an experience I had with my toyota tacoma by what bill says at the end of the video... "...letting it idle all day and all night..." I like to let my truck cool down for a few minutes when i'm done driving it, i park and let it idle for a few minutes. This particular day I had some stuff to carry inside so i thought i'd take my stuff in and come back outside and shut my truck off. Well i got distracted inside with making a sandwich and forgot to come back outside and shut my truck off. The next day i was getting ready for work and realized i didn't have my keys where they normally are so i went outside to see if i left them in my truck and the fucker had been running all night from 4pm the previous day to 530 then next. I was very thankful it didn't get stolen!
@taylor21056 жыл бұрын

Not because our patients demanded we roll coal to the hospital but because our ambulances would kick into emergency regeneration mode on the highway. All of this emissions bullshit has made it a nightmare to use these ambulances and fire trucks for our department. Also can you recommend a turbocharger that's exactly the same minus the ceramic ball bearings I heard other people talking about that, plus you said it in one of your newer videos or should i just leave it alone. Ford has the fleet market cornered
@Roushfan510 жыл бұрын
Sure you can argue that, you can argue anything, proving it however is the issue and I see nothing to suggest that Ford is any worse then Chevy or Dodge. With that kind of idle time and mileage? Have fun finding a motor that won't have some problem. All rigs have there problems and foibles. There is more to a rig then motor, and Ford is generally considered to make the best/strongest frames and the only way to replace a frame is to replace the whole rig. Thats why the E-Seires is so popular with motor home and coach builders even though Ford vans rarely have the strongest motors. The fact that the E-Series chassis sells so well also probably makes servicing and getting replacement parts easy. One of the reasons some police departments don't want to give up the Crown Victoria for example is that, bigger departments especially, have whole warehouses filled with replacement fenders, doors, bumpers etc.
@Stonemasters1110 жыл бұрын
Arguably, that's your opinion. Time and time again you go and purchase things in life that have good results, makes you think about the results they've experienced with the other makes for them to continue using Ford's Chassis. JFYI, 2500hrs of idle time is equivalent to 63,000 miles, just imagine a Pkup with an EGR sitting idling for that many miles. Idling is actually worst on any vehicle gas or diesel than moderate driving as motor's are unable to clean themselves out. Add to that the 120,000 of hard driving miles it had as well. As was mentioned, the EGR system is a cheap and easy fix on the 6.7. In other words, this Ambulance was back on the road quick and good for another 150-200K Miles of Service before another EGR Failure? I say that's pretty good for any businesses bottom line, mine included...

+najem soc The high gear ratio in the F-450's will keep the engine RPM really high and you will have premature engine failure from it, especially on a 6.4L Diesel. 90% of the 6.4L engines I've replaced are on cab chassis trucks with high freeway mileage that saw extended periods of high RPM.

With a tuner you can recalibrate it. I have a SCT tuner on my 450 and took the governor off. The tires on those trucks are rated for 80 MPH and below, don't recommend driving over 80 if you don't have to but sometimes you need that extra speed.
