I have an old song that I played acoustic guitar and sang for years. One day I finally decided to record it so I attempted a 4/4 drum beat and was like "WHAT THE HELL??!!" All those years and I never realized my song was 6/8 !!! Anyways the kick on 1 and snare on 4 sounds great. Thanks for the suggestion.

I was messing around with this, and you get a cool groove if you play a kick drum on 1 and the ‘and’ of 2, or the space right between the 2nd and 3rd beats.

the beat at 5:30 sounds very much like what is used in 50's-60's doo wop songs and it is suggestive of a heartbeat, but i have had the hardest time tracking down information about it (no formal musical education). it's featured in some newer songs like "love on the brain" by rihanna. any chance you know of a formal name or description for it? a personal favorite of mine too

Personally, I understand the time sigs b/c of band class, but behind the kit I find(IMO)that counting becomes a burden. I go w/ the flow of the song, often not knowing what signature I'm in. Just gotta stay in tempo, whatever the time. Anyone else feel this way?

Exactly. I play by ear and have been since I was 6 years old. I am now 15 and it has worked for me. I can listen to any beat and play a groove that will fit the style of music besides jazz Haha. I am trying to learn how to read notes right now and count so when the time comes I need it I will be prepared.

@@chrisdeterman3247 I don’t disagree. That’s why I felt the classical essentials were necessary. It’s just what works for me behind the kit. I came up short recently in a major drum line audition because well, I got cocky and secondly because I was rusty on the 6/8 signature. I’m not saying they’re not important.

Is there a difference between 6/8 and playing triplets in 4/4
@drumdex
@drumdex 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, 4/4 would have 12 8th notes (when played as triplets, where as 6/8 has 6. 2/4 would technically have the same number of notes, but having to write a triplet symbol over every group of three would make it look cluttered when transcribing so that’s one reason 6/8 is preferred. Also there are some accent patterns associated with each time signature so there are underlying reasons you’d call it one or the other, bit in technical terms 6/8 would have the same number of notes as 2/4
