6.8 Western - 100 Yard Ammo Test

I read a study that concluded the temp of the barrel had a greater affect on velocity than the temp of the powder. But put them both together and you can see a huge velocity swing. Ammo sitting in the sun at 95* and a hot barrel after 10 shots would probably shoot close to 100fps faster than a single shot sitting in a deer stand in 40* weather. I've got a rifle with a match barrel and I've noticed lot to lot variations from one box of ammo to the next affect accuracy. This rifle shoots nice small groups when the velocity is around 3015, but opens up considerably at 3080. That's Federal Fusion 270 130 gr. I thought my accuracy woes were over when I bought this barrel! Haha, you weren't kidding when you said there are a lot of variables.

Spec ops n some snipers in the middle east would leave mags full of ammo in the sun to reach out farther. Especially the 50 cal Barrett and the 338 lapua togain a edge well out past 1000yrds. Read Furlongs articles.

The max safe pressure is way higher on 6.8 western vs 270. 270 is a phenomenal round one of my favorites but it is becoming dated compared to the new modern 7mms... I mean my 280 AI blows a 270 out of the water and 280 AI is ancient compared to 6.8 western.

Both are exactly the same 65,000 psi MAP (max average pressure) in SAAMI specs, with the same 4% standard error allowed as for almost all chamberings. You probably mistook it for 277 Sig FURY, the first and so far ONLY chambering with MAP higher than 65,000psi (that one is rated for 80,000psi, but requires steel casehead for that, brass is too soft).

That insane heat and humidity affects the density of the air which will account for the difference from your sighting in group to today. Also, as the longer you are on the range in that climate you do fatigue a bit more than you might realize which might account for group #4. What "I" would like to see if for you to repeat that exact same test when the weather is 40 degrees or less and see how things change... or don't change. I don't have my 6.8 Western yet Adam, so I'm living it through your videos!! Please keep these coming!! My almost 70 year old eyes don't even think of trying 1000 yard or mile long shots... but I hope you are successful. 300 yards is about my maximum these days, but that will be perfect for my Alaska hunting after I get moved up next year!

Heat can really effect your accuracy...hell you can end up with a heat stroke. Really have to be careful, sometimes I take a cold tile when I'm out working in the heat. Early in the mornings and late at night is when I look for groundhogs. I've noticed that even groundhogs get less active in the heat of the day and stay close to the shade or just poke their heads out. Humidity can be another factor on accuracy and barrel. Depending on on how many rounds you run a bull barrel can handle longer duration on heat and last bit not least barrel twist and powder Less twist on the barrel use lighter grains. More twist more grains.

Amazing how accurate that rifle is even with a hot barrel. I'm also impressed with how 4 types of ammo were all in the same area. That means you can change ammo without reseting the scope. I think the last group was left due to barrel heating.

That 170gr silver tip is quite disappointing. Nosler makes better 150gr (AccuBond Long Range, 0.591 G1 BC) which can be used from good old 270Win and 270WSM with 10" twist, no need in extra barrel burn and recoil.

Haven't had a chance to comment on a while been letting my channels roll at work, I first heard of the 6.8 western back when Ron Spomer put out his analysis of the cartridge I think when it came out round abouts and It was the first "new" cartridge that I actually gave a second look at IV been really interested in this round and really psyched you got a chance to grab one and do these videos, I don't have a rifle in 6.8 yet but it's one of the few "new" innovations that added to the bucket list, you know how I am with my old 270 weatherby being my favorite long reach rifle out here in the hills where a long reach really ain't so long and how the 6.8 stacks to the 270 on paper anyway really gets my attention and it's just sexy , like a 270 impregnated a 6.5 Creed and the baby was a cute little chubby flybaby ,lol

My personal experience with the Win XPR in 6.8 Western: sold that pos after 6 months. Grouped all over the place with 2 flyers in every group. Avg group, 2.9"/100yards. YMMV. I bought a Winchester 70 Supergrade in 6.8 Western. I am a wood stock and blued steel kind of guy. The Win trigger beats the poop out of the trigger on my friend's Browning Hunter series rifle in 6.8 Western.

I just saw this video for the first time and wow am I impressed. You've made up my mind for me I gotta get me a rifle chamber in 6.8cal. It will help you to save money and it will also make for a great set of videos to see the performance difference when you've reloaded those casings start putting your casing in the original boxes and mark the boxes with whichever rifle you use to shoot them. The 168 grain silvertip will not group in my 30-06. Went and shot groups with Core-lokt tipped, TTSX, Accutip, and Silvertips. All shot under 1" other than the silvertips. They just would not group.

Hi Larry, I’m also in Western Canada, and I’m in the firearms retail business, yesterday, Aug 3, 21 I noticed that Browning finally had some 6.8s available to the Canadian market, if you’re really interested you might want to jump on it quickly, just find a Browning dealer close to you. Sorry I didn’t pay attention to the $ of the gun, as I was really looking for another damn 6.5 Creed for a client. Also I haven’t seen any ammunition for it yet either.

You said your sighting vise jumped on the one shot. They call that the lead sled for a reason. Get yourself two 25 pound bags of lead shot and lay them in the tray of the sled. It'll keep it still when shooting. I've got the same rig and use it when I sight my magnum in.

Hi Who-Tee, boat tail bullets require a G7 BC, I thought boat tails reduce drag on the Bullet, but they consistently have a lower BC in the G7 vs G1 scale ???? What we want is a BC closer to 1.00 ? I clearly don’t understand what’s happening with BC’s, can you explain it ????

WTW I find dry firing a couple times before shooting for groups helps me. Especially on the first groups. I think a couple dry fires before the first Browning ammo would have put you closer to one hole. Either way great shooting! I'm really getting bit by the 6.8 Western bug. Also if anyone has a round about number on barrel life for the 6.8 Western I'm interested. Great video. Keep'em coming !

I’m not surprised with the results. When you picked up the silvertip I thought “ this will be the biggest group”. Sure enough it was. I’ve not had luck with silvertip ammo in any rifle or caliber. But accubonds are great. Those are target ammo accurate and will drop game. I’ve got a couple bull elk on my wall that will attest to the performance of accubonds.

The 6.8 western definitely peeks my interest! I'm not sure it's a rifle I'd carry into the woodlots of central PA though. I feel the slower bigger cartridges shine here. The 308 Winchester, the 30-06 Springfield, the 35 Whelen, the 358 Winchester, the 30-30 Winchester, the 35 Remington, and the 350 Legend using 170 to 200 grain bullets. I do see a lot of 270 Winchester, 7mm Remington Mag and 300 Winchester Mag as well... but honestly... when you're shooting deer inside 100 yards the 35 Remington and the 350 Legend in my opinion are the best! Straight flattens even the biggest buck!

Man I just shot my new rifle browning x bolt speed with the short barrel.. 20” barrel and shot 2 boxes of Winchester 162 gr and I’m not happy at all with the results.. I think it’s one of my least accurate ever at the range .. I shot 100 yards and I put 40 rounds down range and the best I could get shots on average after 40 rounds.. all in a circle of 5 inches .. I’m definitely not gonna be hunting deer with my 6.8 western.. I been doing quite a bit of shooting this summer and it’s first time I couldn’t get a sub MOA .. I’ve shot 5 different rifles and all did great except for the 6.8 western

When this rifle first came out, I was like....why? Then after doing some due diligence and how I was going to get the .270 WSM for a deer gun out to 500 yards and how the 6.8 Western was based off the .270 WSM and made with the Hornady PRC rounds the neck angle and having the rounds no cramed in the brass allowing more room for powder and making the 1:7.5 rifling and seeing the numbers I fell in love with the numbers and seeing videos of the 6.8 smacking steel at 600 yards at 1260 foot pounds of energy and 1920 FPS at 600! Im grabbing the 6.8 Western in the Christensen MPR or Ridgeline, I may go Ridgeline because I already have a MPR in .300 win mag and its making key holes at 300 yards with a lead sled but still its a jaw dropper, I know I got a really good rifle, not all are as good as this one I know that. I definitely got lucky and its about time lol I had a bad Ruger M77 in a .338 win mag back in the day. We have big elk out here all over and we have MASSIVE bodied deer as well, we have blacktails out here but they are half mule deer called bench legs and the further east you go in Washington State the more muley they get but they are awesome bucks with very unique dark horned racks! So many elk they are like fleas on a dog, the elk trails look like dirt bike trails lol and we have chrome salmon from the ocean in 20 foot wide small rivers I love in here in the Pacific Northwest it really is heaven on earth out here!

Bet you can get a rifle with the boss system on it dialed in for a tight group. Remember that a rifle barrel vibrates and needs tuning just like a guitar string.

Don't weight the sled. You will damage the rifle. The recoil lug will destroy that polymer stock with that 6.8 Western. You'll end up with the action loose in the stock which will kill the accuracy.

Ive noticed , when I could get it ,165 ,180, Supreme Silvertip and 180 Silvertip in my 3006 , run very close to same . I took regular 180 Silvertip Winchester, in bad brush, made one of the logest kills , took 8seconds for the buck to fall from trigger pull , I belive he fell on contact though, looked very small through the Leopold scope all the way up

Similar results to what I've seen in multiple calibers with those bullets. The Silvertips I wouldn't use unless they were my only choice, and not over 100 yards. The ABLR is my preferred bullet since it is less velocity dependent for expansion, and has been very accurate in every caliber I've tried it on. The Matchkings are, well.... king. I haven't really experimented with the "yellow tips" since I've had so much success with the ABLRs.

Didn't know until now that ballistic coefficient is the opposite of a cars coefficient where the lower # means less drag. Thanks Dt. Who! 👍

BC is measured against one of 2 standards: G1 and G7. G7 is for more of the modern bullets. Prolly should use the G7 standard for these ammos. I think he said G1 was on the box. I’m still learning about this stuff…

That lead sled is meant to have weight on the bottom under that tube that says Caldwell

Weighting that sled can damage your rifle. It can cause the recoil lug to crack your stock. Or worse, it can damage your recoil lug and receiver.
