I took a long piece of stainless steel wire, ground one end to a fine point, then bent that at a right angle. Then just ran that across the face of the gear until it caught on the Y. Worked like a charm.

Good thinking...but aren't there two differing timing marks on that gear? Better to pull the pump without removing gear unless it's in the cards.

If you rotate the engine to TDC, the mark should be at the 12 o clock position. If it's not there, rotate the engine one more rotation. I found my mark by using a angled steel pick and feeling for the Y. Pretty easy to do.

If you have the timing cover off already why the hell would you scar up the cam gear? Just put the damn pump gear on and don’t take it off next time

Here is a real hack. Instead of yanking the whole front of the motor apart, go pick up a set of picks from harbor freight for like $4 or find an old dental pick and glide it across the gear face until you feel the Y. You can practice on the IP gear to get a feel for it. Also want to make sure your harmonic balancer is at TDC when you go looking. Can’t find it? Rotate one revolution so #1 is TDC not #4 (both are TDC but on different strokes when lined up). Hope this helps some poor soul in this pickle.

A silver paint pen is cheaper and safer than putting a stress point into gear teeth on a hard to find part.

Hi Johnny Diamond, Great video - However, We don't recommend making physical marks on timing gears. To mark the timing, simply use a *PAINT MARKER , WHITE OUT, OR PAINT* You can spray paint into the can lid, use a screwdriver or broom straw to mark the *TOOTH* then mark the corresponding *VALLEY* a great *TIP* is to make small *DOTS* on the teeth before and after the *MAIN MARK* that lets you know exactly where the mark is without having to search for it. You had a great idea, but just needed tweaking. We hope this helps you and your viewers! :)

Sounds stupid

Better to leave the gear and housing in place. The pump will come off after removing the three gear bolts with a 12 point socket, if you hold your mouth right. For Sidewinder turbos, take off the #8 injector line for extra room, might do it anyway for ease.

That’s not a hack that’s a damaged gear that really needs to be replaced now... those nicks you put in the top of the gear are going to wear on the ip gear teeth and add glitter into your oil while it’s running potentially causing ring and or bearing damage.. and that’s if the nicked teeth don’t sheer off at the ground point.. white out is alot safer than grinding on the teeth..

Mike CorLeoné how to set yourself up for catastrophic engine failure with a dremel, on an engine whose parts have been obsolete for over a decade.

Wow a real fine diesel guy. Not to touch any of my diesel or gas. If that was possible im sure i/h would have marked these gears differantly. I like i/h.

I bet you his engine still runs fine, it's ok to put a smile mark on the gear tooth as long as you don't over kill it .

Well if they put the marks on top of the gear !!! It would wear off !!? That’s the reason why they put it on the front !!! FYI !!!

Damaged the harden exterior of the gears and create a stress point, good idea.

Thanks for the video, I’m replacing the camshaft and related parts in mine, and I kind of only now realized that I’ll need to time my pump lol. Glad you made a clearly explaining video about that. And yes, in order to be able to find a mark like that with a mirror you have to be savvy with the mirror. As a semi truck mechanic, I use one all the time and am used to it by no, but at first it’s pretty hard in tight spots.

Question is how did it get off timing. My 7.3 IDI 1989 wont start even trying to pop the clutch?

Or you can simply use your phone camera from the top without removing .
