Maybe a very silly question but I use royal icing out of a box and I just add water there is egg whites in this mixture already but when i put this on my cookies the icing dries but its not hard in stays a little soft is that meant to be that way or is it suppose to be hard with a snap ? I always wondered .

Not a silly question! So it should dry hard enough that it isn’t tacky or dents when you press down on it. So you should be able to bag up and stack the cookies on top of each other without damaging the icing. But it shouldn’t be so hard that it snaps or like hurts your teeth to eat. It shouldn’t be like hard candy. If it doesn’t dry fully, usually the issue is overmixing the icing while making it. That can cause it to get a marshmallowy texture and not dry properly. Otherwise you could try other mixes (I’m a fan of Judee’s) or make it from scratch and see if there’s a difference.

@Gabriella-r5d do you just use normal icing sugar and mix with water?

@@dee4716for royal icing you need to either make it with meringue powder or use a pre-made mix. I have my royal icing recipe posted as a video.

Im a beginner...how long do you have to wait for the trim to get done before filling it in?

I outlined and flooded right away, so in this video I didn’t wait for it to dry. However, if you want it to set up a bit first, you just need to wait a couple of minutes. I used to outline all my cookies in a set first and then go back around the flood.
