And to think I planted Comfrey to make the tea. Never gave dandelions a thought. I should have known that! I used to check the meadows with my dad in the spring when I was a kid so we would have fresh salad for supper. ( Cow slips too.) But, my great-grandmother's yard was off limits lol, she need the blossoms for her wine. My wife's great-grandmother also made very smooth wine. Whew! Good stuff lol! Those were the days lol! Their taproot would pull a lot of goodness up. Enjoyed as always, take care!

Awesome video Jeff. My Father showed me how to find dandelions when I was a youngster. We never got the ones from the yard -always from the edge of woods or fields. They are a little different from the yard dandelions. They have a wider and not as pointed leaf. Also they don't flower. but send up a seed stalk. Some people sauteed them with EVOO and garlic. we ate them as a salad.

We have them along the roadsides like crazy but not in my yard. I've asked the neighbors if they mind me picking the flowers and usually they say Please do it. I make a sweet nutritious tea by steeping the petals in boiled water. I can make a nice cup with as few as 4-5 blooms and it has the flavor of mild honey. I do add honey, also. So delicious and so good for me. I WISH I could grow them but we don't have enough sunlight. I know the roots have been dried and powdered for faux coffee and roots pull up deep minerals for the garden to use. I've tried growing from bought seeds three times but they just don't like it in my garden or yard. No poison or fertilizer ever used in this once vacant forest then cow field. Now overgrown with trees, except where the house and yard are, the sun doesn't have a chance to grow them for me. I pick the ones in vacant yards and along old dirt roads where I know they haven't been sprayed but still, I wish I had them. Same with Muilien, just can't tame the wild child. When picking the few I find, I always save a few blossoms for the bees.

I have never understood this hate for having dandelions growing among your plants and on the grass.. i even have a big pot on my balcony, with a very happy dandelion that I planted from seed two years ago, to have a plant without toxic weed killer on it, for easy access minor home uses. It's both pretty to look at and attracts bees and butterflies for pollination of my other plants. And great suggestion to make a liquid fertilizer out of them. I make one the same way using nettles, also a missunderstood "weed" imo. But I'm going to be making fertilizer out of dandelions as well :) thank you!

@thb65533 жыл бұрын
@@janetvazquez-dorta2041 yes sure, you can basically cook it just like carrots and parsnips either whole in water on medium heat or with some sort of fat in a frying pan chopped down. But be aware that even though soft to the touch after a couple minutes the root has a natural bitterness in it, like the rest of the plant and should be cooked at least 15 to 20 minutes. To tone the bitterness down further you can add a bit of white sugar to the dandelion root during the cooking process. Herbs that pair well with it are parsley estragon and lovage. Forgot to add you should peel of the skin for a smoother taste though the most vitamins and nutrients are in that part

My great grandmother, grandma, mom, and myself have made "Dandelion Greens" every spring when the leaves are especially less bitter and tender! Pick and wash thoroughly dandelion leaves and soak in water for a few hours. You can store your clean greens in a gallon ziploc until you accumulate enough and store in the fridge. Chop very clean, picked over and rinsed greens into 1" to 2" lengths, and "wilt" with a hot broth of homemade or a tsp to taste +/- of ham bouillon, add a little water and cider vinegar and either a tsp of stevia or sugar to taste for a bowlful of fresh greens. Pour the hot broth over greens, stir, and serve with the broth over baked white yam with left over ham. Superfood that was often eaten during the Great Depression. Wild dandelion is by far more flavorful than bland, expensive farm raised at the health food stores, btw. Pick greens that you are sure have not been sprayed with pesticides or chemicals. Delicacy!

@@He4vyD It's a great question.... If they are young and just everywhere, I'll cover them with cardboard or tons of paper and plant over them. But if they are sparse, but old plants with massive tap roots, I'll pull them out! :-)

I'm ok with dandelion plants in my garden paths, etc. But I always pluck off the flower heads so they don't go crazy. But: in the lawn... who cares... I let them go wild!

They called them weeds bc big pharma doesn't want US to use natural remedies to HEAL OURSELVES 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Mostly true. But they are a little hard to eat the roots, and keep the dandylion. That picky, but this is not. That thing about the leaves protecting the soil through winter is a super strange opinion. They do not keep their leaves in the winter, the are perennial, accept were they are no low temperatures in the winter.

Wait dandelion are part sunflower?? They don’t look like sunflowers They are more like lettuce than sunflowers
@TheRipeTomatoFarms3 жыл бұрын
No, they are not part sunflowers.. They are in the same family and closely related to them. :-)

I'm trying to reserve judgement... there is no way on this earth or the next that I will be using dog pee dandelions for food. Literally would rather starve. I hate them! We have capeweed (arctotheca calendula) which makes a ring of daisy-like flowers. I try to dig them up for compost but honestly I'm losing the war.

I hate chemicals in gardens. My mother in law killed outside ants with acid. Can you imagine?
