I had a car accident in the 70s which gave me my life with multiple broken bones. A Herbal farm lady gave me comphrey plants to make tea. Lots and lots of it. I drank about 2 litres a day. I credit this one thing with my bone health today. It tastes like cucumbers. I knew about the alkaloids but I had zero side effects from drinking it or using it topically as well. Yes a great plant. Thanks for the video. May your day be clothed with happiness.

Hi from NZ 😊 I grow comfrey in my garden, plant potatoes in between, shred comfrey leaves ontop and around the soil, clean garden tools with the leaves and then throw them on the soil, have comfrey around apple trees, and break up leaves for the compost which rots down quicker. It's a versatile plant to grow with a variety of vegetables.

My Dad's Sister Thelma & 5 brothers all ate comfrey. They grew up with it and they used it for multiple things. Thelma was a very big woman. Any time she got a stomach ache she would eat a comfrey leaf or make tea out of it. The all lived into their 80's & 90's. They all drank homemade beer & home made wine, and whisky sometimes. None of them died of liver problems. I think some people it's not good for and others it's good for. Perhaps comfrey doesn't mix well with all the chemicals they put in foods these days because my Dad's family never ate fast foods a day in their lives. Everything in moderation.

There's many things about this plant ( you can look them up, in terms of what they are good to plant with) but if you look at it. A wonder. A beauty.
@jordandimick8861Ай бұрын
When planting, consider the resilience of the plant. It has a deep taproot and is probable it will take over the ares you’ve planted. It’s difficult to get rid of as it can regrow from root fragments. So if you plant it, it’s going to be around for a long while. Also, it’s really toxic to dogs, both leaf and root. However, didn’t know it was a bio-miner, so that’s pretty neat! Just some things to consider before planting

Oooh, one of my favourite healing plants in my garden! ❤ I just harvestet the roots two days ago on full moon and a root day, when the have the biggest power! Here in Europe the leaves die back, so I wouldn‘t have the chance to prepare a poultice this time of the year… so I make a salve and a DMSO Extract… I prepared a warm oil extract/ macerate. I use a yoghurt maker for this, so it takes just a couple of days instead of weeks… the yoghurt maker keeps the temperature at about 35 Degrees, what is gentler than the cooked oil extract. And I scheduled a DMSO Extract. DMSO is much potenter than alcohol for extracts/ tincures: it takes not only the alcohol soluable Ingredient’s but also the fat soluable and the water soluable etc. So you get a full spectrum extract… and the DMSO extract is ready in a couple of days, too! So I will be able to make my salve within a week, ❤🙏🏻🤩

@@gerririddiough yes, almost... I take about 70 % DMSO, 30 % Spring Water. In this case I used 200 g of roots, 150 ml water, 350 ml DMSO...

@TheWeedyGardenАй бұрын
How long have you been doing that? It’s not the first time I’ve heard people promote ingesting comfrey is making them feel better. It might be fair to say that the short term is true, but the long term…? I would look deeper into it if it were myself who just heard that it was not good for your liver. Had to ask chat..”Recent studies have confirmed that consuming comfrey (Symphytum officinale) internally-whether as tea, powder, or raw-poses significant risks to liver health. Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), compounds known for their hepatotoxicity. When ingested, these alkaloids can lead to severe liver damage, including conditions like hepatic veno-occlusive disease, which can progress to cirrhosis and liver failure. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS Research has demonstrated that PAs are metabolized in the liver into toxic pyrrolic esters, which can bind to DNA and proteins, leading to cellular damage and increasing the risk of liver tumors. BMC BIOINFORMATICS Due to these significant health risks, health authorities in several countries have advised against the internal use of comfrey. For instance, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about the potential for severe liver damage from comfrey ingestion. Given the substantial evidence of its hepatotoxic effects, it is strongly recommended to avoid consuming comfrey internally. If you are considering using comfrey for medicinal purposes, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to explore safer alternatives.” Weedy 👍

Fruit trees berries garlic asparagus rugosa roses and lots of other stuff.There was a huge green house with a chicken coop in the north side of it. An outhouse like none I had ever seen! This is where I first saw comfrey. It was beautiful and a huge patch it was. Never knew the owner. There was a man down the road who took to brush hogging and killed the roses. Someone set fire to the straw bale house. It was pushed into the pond. The greenhouse and outhouse were sold. Little by little the greenhouse has been vandalized. Don't know about the outhouse. A third of the place was sold and apartments were built. The remaining land was split up and bulldozed down to build houses. It's really sad that it was ruined. Picked many meals of asparagus before the apartments went in. The tenants discovered the treasures there. I am sure they miss it too. People like you make me want to do this somewhere. Been eating comfrey since childhood.. it's fine. If the agenda says it's bad.. it's probably too good.
@kellikelli44139 сағат бұрын
That's my opinion too. If chickens can eat it, so can humans.

Hi weedy 👏 question: I live in the Bundaberg area off-grid in the hills and I'm struggling to get my comfrey to thrive. I've tried several times and each time the plant struggles along and grows really slowly- any tips for my zone (compacted rocky clay) cheers 😊

I guess you need to keep the 😂water up until it gets going. Otherwise try a bit of chicken poo or compost
@carolinelloyd1858Ай бұрын
@TheWeedyGarden thanks you Weedy- I had been advised NOT to fertilize/compost comfrey, so I haven't. (That was obviously the wrong move) . Thanks again 👍

How close can I plant comfrey around my apple trees?
@TheWeedyGardenАй бұрын
same as a fig

There is no true garden without comfrey, arguably the most versatile, nutrient dense, resilient, super fast growing, whole garden supportive plant there is. One of the few plants you can harvest almost all the leaves and still grows back fast without much signs of stress or shock. I live in a small suburban house and have 6 - 7 comfrey bushes. We were taught to get the Russian Bocking 14 variety which never goes to seed, sometimes comfrey can take over the whole environment, and then you are going to need some serious machines to remove them haha.

I disagree about not ingesting comfrey, this is all false info pushed by big pharma so you don't heal. I chew a leaf or two daily with no issues and making tea with 3 - 4 leaves when I broke my knee helped tremendously. Don't allow information to deter you from nature, nature will teach you yourself if its good for you or not.

It is also important to listen to modern research. Yes it will make you feel better short term, but if you drink the tea and use it too much, it CAN lead to liver issues. Look at one of my other replies

In my country we use it like spinach its very delicious and gives mashed potatoes a vigrant green colour.
@kylie51619 күн бұрын
What country is that? It’s good to hear of people eating it and apparently the First Nation native Americans used to eat it too. I have a book from an Australian herbalist printed in the 90s where she recommended a leaf a day in a smoothie as an anti-aging property. I know everyone has to say not to eat it but I wonder what the actual truth is and what the safe limit is.

Weedy and Elle, can you please make a MOZZIE SPRAY that works on east coast varieties. 🙏

There is a Variety called Russian Comfrey Nr.4 which you can eat and tastes a little like Spinach and has 3% Protein.
@marcogallazzi9049Ай бұрын
That one is also seedless, so it´s not invasive.

So if not good for drinking due to liver issues, would the same not count for feeding to chickens?
@TheWeedyGardenАй бұрын
Good questions. They have a differen metabolism to us so they are far less effected. It is safe as long as it is not their primary source of food
@Blessed6966629 күн бұрын
In my culture in africa we have eaten it for decades maybe more with no issues. Its very nutritious we mix with other veges it tastes like spinach.Even rabbits love it very much.

Does anyone know if it grows well in containers? We currently rent where we live and don't want to plant it in ground and have chickens but also dogs. Have heard so many benefits but also many downsides too.

sure it will

I came here through Self sufficient me with Mark. I liked your style mate. Just a small video tip, have the camera between you and the sun not the sun behind your back. You'll get a much better picture without the glare of the sun behind you. Keep up the good work ( the electrical gardening bit can't work but im willing to watch both your future videos on the topic lol )
@TheWeedyGardenАй бұрын
Thanks 👍 If you are referring to the video at Mark’s place, the sun was not out the day we filmed mate. BTW…you could see that I do have a little experience www.davidtrood.com 🎥👍😁

Would you say that that one comfrey species is superior to another for medicinal use? Such as Symphytum officinale or Bocking 4/14?
