Each GM division used to design, engineer and built their own engine. For example, each division had a 350 V-8, but each division quietly interchanged engines between GM models. You would see a Pontiac equipped a Chevrolet engine. A Buick equipped with a Oldsmobile engine. An Oldsmobile equipped with a Cadillac engine. A Chevrolet truck equipped with a GMC engine. Customers complained about that, so GM had to create Powertrain division, who now build engines for all GM brands. It would be nice if each GM brand design their own engines again.

LOL I know. I was cringing at that RATTLE CAN REBUILT 500 as it ran for several minutes without water or the water pump in operation!

I agree that was a jumbled mess of a 500 that sounded terrible

Generally if it's still on a stand it means it's still being tuned. But that's just what I think. And they should be fine running engine for a little while with no water.

I absolutely love the inperfect American V8s from the 60s and early 70s, the rumble is stunning. So much better than those boring European flat plane V8s that are way overcomplicated.

Europeans love to over complicate EVERYTHING and call it "over engineered" and people fall for it

The standard Cadillac engine went from 472 cu. in. to 500 in the fall of 1974, just 6 months after the fuel crisis triggered by the Arab oil embargo. But, it only had a stock 190 HP, down from 210 the year before, because of the catalytic converter added for the 1975 model year. Both engines shared the same block as did the 425 and 368 used through the early 1980s, which was designed in the mid 1960s to be big enough to be bored out to 600 cubic inches.

The 1977 full sized Cadillacs still had a 2.5 inch wheelbase stretch over the Olds 98 and Buick Electra (which shared the same floorpan), mainly to support the added weight of the last big block engine GM offered in a passenger car. It gave the cars a classic, old-money look, despite the space inefficiency. If you look at the redesigned 1993 Fleetwood (now using a small block Chevrolet engine), it appears that those 2.5 inches were moved from under the hood to the back seat, giving the '93 more legroom than the '92, but leaving it looking a little like a giant slug.

If this is about on highway gasoline engines, the GMC 707 Parlor Coach engine takes the title followed by the 702 V12 and 637 V8. In diesels, GM made several larger on highway diesels, not to mention the EMD Locomotive engines or the Allison V12 aircraft engines.

that 496 has to be burning nitro to be exhausting that much vapor. it's also got the "nitro cackle."

Just for a fyi... thers is a 8L big block LS motor but only for the larger trucks so that would make larger then the buick, olds and ponchos 455ci. I think i remember seeing from Gm performance you could get a 602 motor for racing.
