@lindamcentaffer59696 жыл бұрын
Aaaah the Wankel IS a Rotary. I think ya ought to EDUCATE yourself in this field! The only ROTARY engines used in airplanes, was in the World War 1 era, where the RADIALLY arrainged engine"s CRANKSHAFT was actually bolted to the firewall via a flange on the aft end of the crank, while the engine ROTATED around the crank shaft. The French made Gnome was a prevalent brand then, and the type was known as a ....ROTARY! The more modern types of "Radial - cylindered" engines, where the crank case is bolted to the firewall, HAS BEEN since around 1920, called a RADIAL engine. The Wankel has, because it's crank shaft is "weird," as long as I can remember, always been called a ROTARY. I have gray hair, and you're the first supposed "authority" in the field of engines I have ever seen get confused over this issue. Advice: when many people say you're wrong, research and learn. Then, ya MAN UP & admit it. Much more respectable that way.

I suppose that by now someone's 'splained the difference between supercharging and mechanical scavenging. Detroit Diesels like this, being mechanically scavenged, have that service provided by the Roots blower. Any supercharging would be purely accidental. FWIW some Cleveland Diesels (locomotive engines, much bigger) are turbocharged, having crankshaft driven scavenging blowers to run at low speed/power to get them up & going.

I think, like a lot of people, you're conflating the Packard built RR Merlin V-1650 from WWII, with the Packard-built Liberty V-1650 from WWI. Easy noob mistake, they're both twelve cylinder vee engines with the same displacement, just of entirely different generations. The Liberty 12 is the one they used to power PT boats and some pre-war British tanks, while the RR Merlin was modified into the Meteor tank engine by being downsized to eight cyl.
@psk1w16 жыл бұрын
The Rolls Royce Meteor was a V12, never an eight, and always a close derivative of the Merlin. Some Meteors were made using Merlin blocks which were damaged but still usable, not good enough for use in an aircraft. The main alteration was removal of the superchargers and mild detuning. In this form it was a powerful and extremely reliable engine. As powerful as the Maybach unit in Panzer IV tanks

@aussiebloke6093 жыл бұрын
He's ignorant. This is a simple radial engine. Mind you, there were radial engines that were referred to as rotary (before the Wankel design started using the term), but in those cases, "rotary" meant that the entire radial engine spins on a stationary crankshaft. It's an old idea that made it onto a few aircraft - biplanes, if memory serves - and the design didn't last long because the design limits RPM significantly.

The Cizeta didn't have a central gearbox - it's a central flywheel and power takeoff to avoid flex from having a too-long crankshaft. The gearbox took power from this central point, but it was definitely not a "central gearbox, with a V8 on either side of it..." as there is no way you could fit two V8s _and_ a gearbox within the width of even a ridiculously-wide car like this (remember, the "T" in V16T stands for "transverse" - the engine is sideways across the car.) The gearbox was just behind the engine in the usual position.

I hope I never live to see the day these old engines can no longer be used by enthusiasts. Electric motors are amazing and the future of transport, and while they sound neat, the brutality of lots of little explosions is just irreplaceable to the experience of speed. Everyone needs to attend one single top fuel drag race event in their life. Those engines producing sound so loud it literally compresses your eyeballs and makes your vision vibrate as they bellow down the track is something you will never experience in any other way. I hope electric motors do for the gas engine what the car did for the horse. No longer a disposable tool, instead something for people who truly appreciate them to love and care for. Also, a twin six was used on a car in mad Max fury road... The car was in like 15 seconds of film but they built it with a real twin six. It blew up and they had to improvise, but it goes to show how everything, even the flamethrower bedpan guitar, was a real, functional thing in that movie. The car used in the movie was actually the one in this video, "Elvis", they just used a different body and didn't destroy it (using one of a very few number of cgi effects) because it was too rare and valuable.

Notice the water coming out of the exhaust. That is a marine engine. Water is pumped from outside the hull, circulated through a heat exchanger then dumped out in exhaust. An engine for a tank would use a closed loop system, such as in your car. The setup they have shown would result in engine overheating over time due to the fact there is no radiator to dissipate the heat.

Yeah. 2 pistons per cylinder, each moving on a rocker that connects to a common crankshaft. Also called the Commer TS3, because it was fitted to a Commer van.

2:38 thats a radial engine, not a rotary. radials were mostly used in ww2 planes and some modern cesnas.

I've seen the Sherman multibank.... That didnt look like it.

Adam Adam it could be minus the transmission maybe ? It does look smaller than the few pics I've seen of it.

Allen .Berge The engine I am thinking of had 5 banks in a star like shape. (imagine a flat 12, with a V12 on that and a straight 6 on that again.) I cannot see that here

Adam Adam I found the original video. It's a GM Twin Diesel, also used in the Sherman. He clearly knew it wasn't a multibank because the video correctly identifies it.

Allen .Berge Well there you go!

Definitely GM 6-71's, The rocker covers (and the fact it's diesel) sort of give it away. Flathead motors don't have rocker covers. Plus the colour.

the jrl chopper is not a rotary engine its a radial engine
@BradBo11404 жыл бұрын
The first engine does not look like the 5 bank images on Google. They have 5 banks clearly around a central shaft. That thing has two banks.
@maxpuppy965 жыл бұрын
that first engine has Detroit Diesel blowers on it
@vector69775 жыл бұрын
That's because it is a Detroit twin 6. Not a Chrysler engine.
@GeoHvl3 жыл бұрын
MIstake Huge mistake, the Sherman had an aircraft type radial engine the so-called tank engine is a hybrid 6-71 Detriot.
@johnstuart38513 жыл бұрын
The "Chrysler 5 Bank" is actually a twin 6-71 Detroit Diesel. No Chrysler 5 bank engine shown in this video.
