From the old days. The count used to be thousand and one thousand and two etc. so that the jump master saw the Pilot chute appear at the number, say 5 on a five second delay. The count was corrupted through the years so that the count was reversed. So now the witness will see the pilot chute appear at the word “thousand” bastardising a good system.
